Read. Think. Engage. Our Community Read Expands

Join us for the second year of our Community Read, which is expanded this year to include a children's title. Community Reads are intended to encourage people to pick up a good book and start conversation about a specific topic.

This year we continue to think about our relationship to the natural world, as we embrace Longwood's new Meadow Garden, and invite you to read Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Kimmerer. Together, with local libraries and community partners, we will explore the book’s ideas about the importance of our relationship with plants, Native American culture and storytelling, and the science of botany.

Our children’s title, The Great Kapok Tree by Lynne Cherry, gives our youngest garden guests an inspired look at what the kapok tree means to the creatures that live in it—and what rainforests mean to the world’s ecology.

People often ask me what one thing I would recommend to restore relationship between land and people. My answer is almost always, “Plant a garden.” It’s good for the health of the earth and it’s good for the health of people.–Robin Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants

remote terrain of the mountains in Northern Vietnam. Over the course of three weeks the team hiked along four different mountain ranges including the Fan Si Pan Mountain, Tay Con Linh Mountain, Bát Đại Sơn Mountain, and Tam Đảo Mountain and had collected seed of nearly 500 plant specimens with ornamental or conservation value. The seeds are expected to arrive in the United States in early 2015 where Longwood will begin the extensive process of trialing the specimens for display, research, or breeding potential. See more photos from their exploration on our blog at longwoodgardens.org/blog.

Winter Bird Watch

(3) Longwood Gardens is home to many feathered friends—even in winter. Pack your bird identification books and binoculars for a visit to our Meadow Garden and other Outdoor Gardens this season and see if you can spot some of our seasonal favorites. In early winter you may catch a glimpse of a Northern harrier gliding low over the Meadow. Northern harriers hail from the marshes and prairies of Canada and the Northern United States—and our Meadow Garden is the perfect pit stop for this large hawk on their long-distance migration. Another common sighting this time of year are blue jays, who also frequent our bird feeders. The belted kingfisher can be most often seen perching and preening imperiously on snags above bodies of water, watching for prey before diving head-first into the water in pursuit of small fish and amphibians. They can be found year round at our Hourglass Lake, where the clear water, fallen timber, and sparsely vegetated banks are well-suited for fishing and nesting. Throughout the Gardens, you may spot the Carolina chickadee who is insatiably curious, sociable, and charismatic by nature. During the

Highlights fromOur GardensOrchid Meadow Display Expands

(1) Nestled into the beds of the East Conservatory, more than 400 orchids are tucked into the nooks and crannies between stumps, sedges, and other plant material that make up our orchid meadow display. Returning for its second year, our orchid meadow has almost doubled in size expanding across a 625-square-foot area in the parterres and beds surrounding the Patio of Oranges. The orchid meadow incorporates textures and colors that are inspired by the natural and sustainable landscape of our new 86-acre Meadow Garden. Of course, the orchid meadow wouldn’t be complete without orchids and with a larger space this year, a wider assortment of hybrids and species of Oncidium, species and cultivars of tropical slipper orchids, and pleurothallids, including Masdevallia, are on display.

The orchid meadow not only complements our Meadow Garden but also our orchid collection. When Orchid Extravaganza concludes, specimens will be added to our collection in an effort to continue to grow Longwood’s largest and oldest core collection.

Plant Explorers

(2) Guests are often amazed by Longwood’s innovative and unique displays that feature plants from all over the world. In effort to continue our cutting-edge horticultural displays, Longwood expands our collections through plant exploration in which staff travel to plant-diverse areas of the world in search of new and exotic plants to bring back to the United States. During our most recent plant exploration, Longwood Floriculture Leader, Dr. Jim Harbage and Research Manager, Dr. Matt Taylor, traveled through the lush,

winter, Carolina chickadees tend to congregate in small flocks around people and food, often mixed in with other species like the tufted titmouse, downy woodpecker, white-breasted nuthatch, white-throated sparrow, and various finches. Look for them near the Terrace Restaurant, and anywhere nuts or berries can be found. Learn even more about these birds and discover an even larger list of winter birds on our blog at longwoodgardens.org/blog.

The goal of the symposium is to bring together professionals to learn about and discuss important, timely topics that affect museums and public horticulture institutions. The Longwood Graduate Symposium is designed to give the Fellows the opportunity to plan a symposium, select individual topics and speakers, develop the schedule,
