Montefiore WINTER 2014–2015 • DECEMBER – FEBRUARY FAMILY NEWSLETTER SUPPORTING OUR MISSION Having lived in Cleveland my entire life, I remember driving past Montefiore on Mayfield Road when we visited my grandparents on Pryor Road or on our way to Park Synagogue in Cleveland Heights. Fast forward many years, I am honored to chair The Montefiore Foundation Board. Most of us have a connection to Montefiore, be it a grandparent, parent, aunt or uncle who has experienced the wonderful care Montefiore provides. My connection is my Uncle Herschell who spent six years on the old Mandel 1 wing, which back then provided long-term care. The staff made him comfortable; he was well cared for and enjoyed his new surroundings. It was during his stay that I was asked to join The Montefiore Foundation Board and agreed to show my appreciation for the role Montefiore played in his life while working to assure Montefiore’s future. Over the years, Montefiore has held steadfast to its mission of providing care and dignity for those in need. Today, Montefiore’s role has not changed, but expanded through the generosity of our donors and local agencies such as the Jewish Federation of Cleveland. Over the past six years, we have expanded our continuum of care on both campuses including building The Willensky Residence, an Assisted Living Memory Care Community, changed the name of our hospice program thanks to a gift from the Vinney family to Vinney Hospice and Palliative Care of Montefiore, added 10,000-square-feet to build the Maltz Hospice House and Palliative Care Pavilion along with expanding homecare services by offering Philips Lifeline Home Alert System and an at-home sleep apnea program. At The Weils, our senior campus in Chagrin Falls, we built a beautiful rehabilitation pavilion for post-hospital care and added a memory care wing to the assisted living. We broke ground in June to build an 18-bed memory care pavilion, which will be completed spring 2015. My wife, Marti, and I, along with my mother, Lois Davis, are pleased to provide a lead gift for this project. Updates and HighlightsIt is exciting to report the work

that continues as we develop “Above and Beyond – Better Together,” an innovative program designed to recognize and reward employees who exceed resident and family expectations. This collaborative venture between Montefiore Administration and the Montefiore Volunteer Partners (MVP), formerly The Auxiliary, aims to proactively encourage employees to aspire to individual and team excellence through compassionate care, service dependability, problem-solving skills and cooperation.

There are many important components necessary for the success of “Above and Beyond.” After clearly establishing the purpose and objectives, we have:• Assigned important roles and

responsibilities and have created “work teams” to help with a smooth launch, roll-out and continued growth of the program.

• Defined specific and measurable individual and team accomplishments that can be recognized and rewarded.

• Drafted a new attendance policy and a list of service requirements for program eligibility.

• Continued to research creative reward and recognition materials that are visible and motivating.

Customer service and compassionate care are vital to the “Above and Beyond” program, and much consideration has been given to ensure that all employees will receive proper training. A beautiful commitment to caring video has been produced by Sandy Zieve, and a compatible study/discussion guide for use with all employees is now in development.

Additional customer service training materials still need to be identified and finalized for all staff as well as selecting the presenters and facilitators for these training sessions. Budgeting and marketing considerations, including the new logo and “KUDOS” compliment cards, are some things currently in process.

We would like to acknowledge the work of so many who have contributed their time and effort to this project. Mayda Rothenberg, MVP board member and project chair, and Carol Weiss, Montefiore vice president of human resources and planning, have been collaborating with project committee and MVP Board Members Marilyn Weinberg, Darla Gordon, Mary Iammarino and Diane Weiner. The enthusiastic Advisory Panel of 20 + employees, representing all the various departments in the Montefiore community, continues to review our progress and give us valuable feedback.

We encourage anyone to participate by joining MVP and becoming active in our mission of improving resident and patient life at Montefiore. Please continue to look for further updates and direct any questions to Carol Weiss at 216.910.2622 or [email protected].

The Benefits of VolunteeringWith busy lives, it can be hard to find

time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are vast. The right match can help you find friends, reach out to the community and learn new skills.

Learn more about the benefits of volunteering by calling Diane Weiner, volunteer manager, at 216.910.2741 or Marissa Gelender, volunteer coordinator, at 216.910.2566, or log on to: montefiorecare.org for a list of volunteer opportunities.

Enjoying the volunteer potluck brunch are Marsha Jones and Sandi Riga.

Students from The Intergenerational School (TIS) join residents Julius Abrams and Ron Katz in an arts and crafts project.

On October 14 and November 18, 2014, Debbie Friedman, Mandel JCC Family Place Coordinator, along with parents and grandparents brought their children/grandchildren to Montefiore to engage in a wonderful intergenerational program with Montefiore residents. Participants ranged in ages from one to 100-years-old! Debbie used toys, music and books to stimulate all the senses. Age doesn’t matter as we are all kids at heart. This program was a collaboration of three community organizations – the Mandel JCC, the Jewish Federation of Cleveland (using their PJ Library) and Montefiore.

Lauren Rock, Montefiore president and CEO, is thrilled to announce a generous gift of $300,000 from Jeffrey & Marti Davis and Lois Davis, who, as a family, have named the new memory care pavilion at The Weils The David and Freda Robinson Residence. The Robinson Residence was aptly named in memory of Lois’ parents and Jeffrey’s grandparents. This $4 million expansion project consists of 18,000-square-feet and was designed as a residential residence for individuals with dementia.

This inviting and intimate pavilion consists of 18 suites with three neighborhoods of six suites, which are all self-contained. Each neighborhood will be overseen by trained staff that is on-site 24-hours a day, seven days a week including 24-hour nursing supervision. Spacious suites include a bedroom, sitting/living room, kitchenette, built-in closet, full bathroom with shower

and washer & dryer – all designed with safety in mind.

Intimate family-style dining areas serve as gathering spaces for meals, activities and socialization, designed to engage the mind, body and spirit. A multisensory room incorporating special lighting and sounds, plus tactile and visual stimulation, is for all to utilize. The three households have their own family room for relaxing, visiting, social engagement and activities.

A private entrance for visitors and parking is just outside the residence. Easy access to secure courtyard gardens with lovely seating areas and walking paths enhance the overall ambiance.

The building is designed by C.C. Hodgson Architectural Group.

EBOLA AND HANUKAH:SOMETHING IN COMMON

It would seem unusual to link the terrible plague of Ebola with our very joyous celebration of Hanukah, which begins Tuesday evening on December 16. But there is a major linkage: Both testify to the tremendous

impact of a single individual. In 1976, the Ebola virus was not even

heard of. Thanks to the heroism of a young scientist – working on viruses in Antwerp – Ebola, as a possible plague, was discovered. The scientist, Peter Piot, was from Belgium. Not only did he isolate this virus, but despite having a wife three months pregnant, Dr. Piot rushed to Africa (then Zaire, now the Democratic Republic of Congo) to study this pathogen and prevent the possibility of an uncontrolled epidemic. Time and again, this man journeyed to Africa to combat this sickness and to assist with other illnesses, such as AIDS, despite the obvious dangers to himself.

Two thousand years earlier, approximately 165 years before our era, another hero took center stage. Judah the Maccabee, his father and brothers stood up to the tyrant and his henchmen. Unwilling to scrape and bow down to an idol, Judah summoned the will to defy the authorities and took up arms, gathering a few thousand to his cause.

Hanukah celebrates not only the rescue of Judaism from certain extinction, but also the courage of a single leader: Judah. Ultimately, Judah gave his life in this battle, but we owe the survival of Judaism and its daughter religions, Christianity and Islam, to the bravery of a single man and the followers he inspired.

A very happy and meaningful Hanukah to all!

Thanks to a generous grant from the Mt. Sinai Health Care Foundation, Montefiore was able to host “Navigating the Memory Maze… Pathways to Dementia Decision-Making.” The Community-Wide Expo and Healthcare Professionals CEU Symposium took place September 14-15, 2014 with Dr. James Leverenz, director of the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, as the keynote speaker for both days. The Expo brought more than 150 guests to our Beachwood campus to learn about the effects of dementia from local experts through breakout sessions, informational booths and health screenings. Our second-day CEU event housed a sold-out crowd of healthcare professionals. We are

very proud that we had the opportunity to sponsor these two meaningful and educational events.

WHY DO WE GIVE “TZEDAKAH?” Some would say “because my parent(s)

taught me to give,” or “because I was asked and I felt obligated.” While others would say, “because I want to give back” or “because it is the right thing to do.” Whatever the reason, Judaism considers tzedakah to be one of the greatest mitzvot we can perform.

The word tzedakah (Hebrew: vesm) comes from the Hebrew word tzedek, meaning righteousness or justice. It refers to the Jewish practice of giving money to help those that are less fortunate – using our financial resources to create a more just and righteous world. Practices similar to tzedakah are found in many other cultures and religions, such as zakat in the Muslim tradition or tithing in Christianity. Tzedakah is different from the idea of charity or philanthropy in that it is more than simply a nice thing to do when you feel moved, rather, it is an obligation of every community member to give to those in need.

Offering one’s financial resources shows a commitment to an organization and confidence in its mission, but giving is also an opportunity to do something you will personally feel good about – it is a gift you give yourself.

I recently had the opportunity to help someone who was struggling with walking up the walkway from the parking lot to our building. Instead of rushing to get to my car and head off to my next activity, I stopped and helped him. The fact is, that single act of tzedakah helped me just as much as it helped the recipient, and it felt good to help someone else. What a gift I gave myself!

With each gift you give, large or small, material or with time, energy or talent, I hope it puts a smile on your face and a warm feeling in your heart.

Thank you for helping us help our community!

You are truly a blessing.Debbie

DEBBIE ROTHSCHILD, DIRECTOR OF THE MONTEFIORE FOUNDATION

It is our privilege to provide loving, innovative care at Montefiore, The Weils and in the community for more than 133 years.

Despite the mounting fiscal challenges, Montefiore and The Weils continue to touch thousands of lives annually, on our campuses and in homes throughout the community. These essential services we provide each day, give families and friends the peace of mind that their loved one is in caring, capable hands.

Your generosity makes Montefiore and The Weils a better place to live, work, visit and volunteer. Loving gifts ensure that each resident receives the best in care and services, regardless of their financial ability. Please consider supporting our annual campaign – you make the difference to our residents and the whole community!

To make your annual gift, visit montefiorecare.org or call 216.910.2350.

LeadingAge Innovations AwardWe are pleased to share that

Montefiore’s proposal to the 2014 LeadingAge Innovation Fund has been selected. The selection committee reviewed more than 110 applications from across the country, and our proposal to pilot In-Home Memory Support was one of two chosen.

The grant provides funding to launch our In-Home Memory Support program in 2015, an innovative program that will provide care navigation support to help members of the community age in place and live independently as long as they are able, while also easing the burden and stress of decision-making on families.

The Remembering ProjectPlease join us on Tuesday, January 13

at 7 pm in the Maltz Auditorium for a screening and panel discussion of The Remembering Project, an oral history project highlighting holocaust survivor experiences.

Throughout the interviewing, video taping and editing process, Jordan Chessin, a freshman at Ohio State University and recent Solon High School graduate, Abby Kagan, a sophomore at Shaker Heights High School, Sam Royer a senior at St. Ignatius High School, and Guenevere Logan, a junior at Orange High School engaged with Holocaust survivors at Montefiore and throughout our community. This process offered the unique opportunity for teenagers to discuss first hand accounts of the Holocaust.

Participants include Mike Pupa, Alex Zelczer, Roni Berenson, Irene Weiner and husband Marvin Weiner. The Remembering Project was managed by personal documentarian Natalie Bauman of Sunrise Sunset Documentaries, which is now The Digital Mosaic.

We would like to thank the 2014 Saltzman Youth Panel for their generous support of The Remembering Project.
