Principal’s Message Dear Students and Parents, As we enter the second semester, our focus continues to be on academic rigor and on aca-demic achievement. Congratulations to our seniors! Many of our seniors have begun to receive their College acceptance notices from prospective colleges. It is very impressive to see the variety of colleges that our seniors have been invited to attend. Please let us know when a senior receives an acceptance letter. We are proud to share the good news. We will be giving a variety of assessments in the upcoming months. Here are some major testing dates for you to review: · The first Spring DCAS testing window is February 5th through February 13th. This is the first of two DCAS testing opportunities for students. The DCAS test is a statewide test that measures the performance of all of our 9th and 10th graders in the areas of Math and Read-ing. Score reports for your student will be sent home as soon as they are available. If you have any questions about the DCAS State testing, please contact Mr. Paul Iaboni at 475-3951. · In 2014-2015, the State will be changing its Statewide testing measure to the Smarter Bal-anced Assessment. Concord has been selected to participate in the field test for Grade 11 in English/Language Arts during a two week window beginning March 18th. · On Wednesday, April 16th, all 11th Graders will be taking the SAT. The SAT test will be pro-vided free of charge during the school day to all 11th graders. If you have questions about the SAT test, please contact Mrs. Leah Heckles at 475-3950. · The second testing window for the DCAS State testing is May 5th through May 16th. · AP Exams will begin on May 5 and continue for two weeks. More information will be sent out as the dates are approaching. If you have any questions about the AP Exams, please contact Ms. Andrea Harding at 475-3950. · In May, students will participate in the Statewide 10th grade Science test, the State End of Course exam in Algebra II and US History. Looking ahead, there is a great deal of excitement around our end of the year senior events. Our Prom will be at the Riverfront on Thursday, May 29th 6:30 pm to 11:00 pm. Immediately following the Prom, the Concord After-Prom will be at Concord beginning at 11:30 pm. Com-mencement for the Class of 2014 will be at the Bob Carpenter Center on Sunday, June 1st at 7:00 pm. We are looking forward to these very special and memorable events. We appreciate all of the time, effort, and energy that our students, parents and community have put into the planning and organizing all of the events that happen during the year. It is the “family” approach at Concord that makes the positive difference in our school. If you have any questions or would like to share some good ideas, please feel free to contact me. As always, thank you for supporting Concord High School. Sincerely, Anne Lambert Principal

CELL PHONE USE Per the Code of Student Conduct, use of a cell phone at Concord between the hours of 7:30 and 2:15 represents a violation of the Code. Please do not call or text your student during the school day. Students using cell phones, etc. will be sent to Time-Out and a referral will be written and given to your child’s administrator. Below is the excerpt from page 28 in the Student Code of Conduct Handbook. Every student receives a Student Agenda and a Code of Conduct Handbook at the beginning of the school year.
“COMMUNICATION DEVICES
Communication devices such as, but not limited to, cellular phones, elec-tronic beepers, MP3 players, electronic notebooks/pads and/or other elec-tronic signaling devices, may not be used in school during the official school day unless with the permission and under the direct supervision of a teacher or administrator for instructional purposes within classrooms and instruc-tional areas of the school. When not being used for instructional purposes within classrooms and instructional areas of the school, devices must be silenced and stored out of sight. Text messaging during courses or State assessments is prohibited. “
NOTICE TO PARENTS
The Brandywine School District's Student Code of Conduct is availa-ble on our website, www.brandywineschools.org. You can find it in Site Shortcuts on the District's homepage and also on our school's homepage.
SENIOR STUDY HALL PRIVILEGE Seniors (only) have earned the privilege of leaving school campus whenever they have study hall last period of the day. There is a form available in the main office that needs to be completed and signed by the student’s study hall teacher and their parent/guardian. When this is complete the senior brings the form to the main office where they will receive their permanent study hall pass. The senior may sign out during last period only. Student shows their permanent pass to their study hall teacher and then they are free to leave cam-pus. There are no exceptions to this privilege.
CLOSED CAMPUS Concord High School is a closed campus. This means that all stu-dents are required to attend all classes every day. The only time a student is excused from school early is with a written note from the parent/guardian. Additionally, seniors may leave only during last period study hall if they have followed the procedure for the Senior Study Hall Privilege. Students who leave campus without written parent/guardian permission are subject to the consequences out-lined in the Student Code of Conduct Handbook that is given to each student every year.
PARENT’S RIGHT TO KNOW PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
As a parent of a student in the Brandywine School District, you have the right to know the professional qualifications of the classroom teachers who provide instruction to your child. Federal law allows you to request certain information regarding Delaware licensing and certification requirements; the teachers’ major areas of study and
advanced degrees, and the qualifications of our paraprofessionals. This information can be accessed through the Delaware Department of Education website address: http://deeds.doe.k12.de.us. Click on parent/general public user group then click “search for employed Delaware public/charter school educator.” Enter the last and first name of the educator and click “search”. Scroll down for infor-
mation. Click on “profile” to view educator’s profile.
HOME ACCESS CENTER (HAC) HAC allows you to view your child's grades, assignments, and attend-ance. The website is: https:/hac.doe.k12.de.us. A letter was sent home with your child the first week of school with your username and password. Please email your student’s guidance counselor if you need your login and /or password.
KEEP CONNECT5 UP-TO-DATE Connect5 is the automated phone call and email system used by the
BSD to keep parent/guardians informed of important school infor-
mation such as unscheduled school closings and upcoming school
events. The system takes its phone and email information from a
monthly upload of the district’s student information system, eSchool
Plus. It is critically important that parents keep phone/email infor-
mation up-to-date in the system by reviewing the eSchool Plus Home
Access Center. Please contact your student’s school to update phone
numbers/email addresses. In addition, it has been reported that if a
Blackboard Connect message is answered without a “Hello”, then the
system may wait to transmit the message (to see if an answering ma-
chine is going to answer). Simply say “Hello” once and the system
will detect your voice and transmit the message.
FREE TUTORING National Honor Society (NHS) offers free tutoring every Tuesday and Wednesday right after school in room DD228. Drop in, no sign-up needed – get help with your Math homework, get help reviewing for a test, or practice your Spanish. Stay as long as you need - tutoring runs from 2:20 to 3:30. Bus passes are available. This free tutoring runs the entire second semester, right up to final exams every Tues-day and Wednesday in DD228.
DID YOU KNOW… Sick child — If your child becomes ill during the school day, he/she should report to the Nurse’s office. School Nurses maintain records of illnesses and it is important that this procedure be followed. Stu-dents are discouraged from calling parents/guardians directly when they are ill. This circumvents the system, skews records, and causes unnecessary classroom disruptions.
Dropping off something for your child — If your child has for-gotten his/her homework, lunch money, permission slip, etc., you may bring it to the main office. Please make arrangements for your child to come to the main office so that his/her classroom is not in-terrupted. We do not page during the day unless there is an emer-gency.
49.47% of Concord High School students earned honor roll For the 1st marking period.
Daily Morning Announcements and the Newsletters are posted on the Concord High School website. Go to
Winter 2014 Page 3
www.brandywineschools.org/concord and click on News.
Early Dismissals — Parents are encouraged to schedule appoint-ments outside of normal school hours whenever possible. However, if your child has an appointment during school hours, please follow this procedure to ensure your child is ready and waiting for you at the appointed time and classroom disruptions are kept to a mini-mum. Give your child a note to be handed in to the Main Office first thing in the morning with the date and time your child needs to be excused early. This note should have the child’s first and last names, time of dismissal, reason, and your daytime phone number. ALL early dismissals are confirmed by phone. The child will be given a pass that allows him/her to meet you out front. If you follow this procedure, you do not need to come into the school to sign out your child. If you have a last minute appointment, the Attendance Office will need one of the following authorizations from you:
Come in in person to pick-up your child
Send a fax to 529-3094
Send an email to: [email protected] or go to CHS website and under Site shortcuts, select CHS attendance.
Concord High School is a closed campus — Students are not permitted to leave without proper permission.
Dropping Off Your Child — Please pull your vehicle all the way down to the last door by the POOL door. This door opens into the back hallway of our school. Pulling down to the last door helps to alleviate traffic back-ups on Ebright and Naamans Road. Please be considerate of each other.
ATTENDANCE NOTES When writing an attendance note for your student, please make sure the note is legible, contains the student’s first and last name, the date in question and the reason for the absence or late. We have had some attendance notes that are incomplete so no attendance entry was made to eSchool.

FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE . . . It is Flu Season
Flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza vi-

Every year in the U.S., on average:
5% to 20% of the population gets the flu
More than 200,000 people are hospitalized
About 36,000 people die from flu
Help Prevent The Spread Of Influenza
Cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing
Wash hands frequently and carefully with soap and water
Stay home if you are sick
Consult your physician
Influenza Symptoms

A Reminder From the Nurse. . . A reminder that spring sports starts on March 1st. If your student
plans on participating on March 1, they must have a DIAA sports
physical on file in the nurse’s office. These can be obtained at your
PCP or through the Concord Wellness Center if the student is a mem-
ber. If your child intends to participate in sports at Concord High
School, the DIAA Sports Physical Form must be used and the physi-
cal must have been done after April 1st, 2013.
AP REGISTRATION It is hard to believe, but it is time for AP registration! Registration
this year will open on Thursday, February 6th and close on
Wednesday, March 5th. Prior to registration, Ms. Harding, Building
AP Coordinator, will be visiting AP classes to distribute the “Bulletin
for AP Students and Parents 2013-2014” and to discuss general infor-
mation in regard to the registration process.
AFTER-PROM Dear Parent/Guardian of a Concord High School Senior: The Concord High School after-prom committee is asking for your support. We had a brief organizational meeting over the holiday with a few parents, but are hoping you would join us in planning and executing the event. The after-prom committee will meet on Mon-day, Feb. 10th in the cafeteria and Feb. 24 at 6:30 in the library. This year’s after- prom event will be held at Concord High School on May 29th, 2014 from 11:30 pm – 2:00 am For many seniors the prom is a highly anticipated evening. The after-prom is an established tradition that extends the prom atmosphere in an alcohol and drug free environment. By planning early we can continue this tradition for our children. We need to raise around $10,000. We would ask each parent/guardian to write a check for a minimum of the amount of $20.14 – coinciding with the year of our children’s graduation. Please send to CHS c/o After Prom. Make checks payable to CHS After Prom. The parents transform various spaces in the school based upon a chosen theme. The project is broken up into sub-committees and you can participate in more than one. Currently the committees in-clude: Fundraising: (Sponsorships, car washes, events at local eater-ies, or businesses where a portion of the proceeds benefit the event) Entrance way, Memory Lane, Game Corridor, Cafeteria (games and food), Gym (blow up games), Bathrooms, Changing room (to store or return prom attire and change clothes). There is another sub-committee working on a Fashion Show for March 21st, and the pro-ceeds benefit the after-prom.

FALL SPORTS WRAP-UP MEGHAN DOOGAN SCORES 1000 POINTS The flowers and balloons were ready. And, as it turned out, so was Meghan Doogan. The 5-foot-9 Concord High senior scored 18 points to surpass the 1,000-point milestone and lead the host Raiders to a 63-44 victory over Archmere in nonconference girls basketball action Thursday, Jan. 9, 2014 The impending feat may have been hanging over Doogan's head through a full day of classes, but the necessary 15 points were not at the top of her list of hoop daydreams. "It didn't matter if I got my thousand points *Thursday+," she said. "It was all about the win, for sure, because we've had a tough history with Archmere. This is our first win against them since my freshman year. If I made a thousand, I made a thousand. If not, I got it next game." Doogan, who will play basketball next year at Boston University, did eventually concede the day was a bit stressful. "But I knew I had to play calm and play my game," she added. "And I definitely wouldn't have gotten it without my teammates; they got me the ball a lot today, which was nice." She missed her first four shots, including a pair of 3-point tries, be-fore scoring the final seven points of the opening period to give the
Raiders an 11-7 lead. She scored seven points in a 14-2 run to start the second quarter and build a 25-9 lead. Concord switched to an aggressive man-to-man, forcing numerous turnovers by an Auks team that appeared flat. By halftime, the Raiders' lead was 35-18, with Doogan one point from 1,000. Just 49 seconds into the third quarter, the only sound heard was Doogan taking a dribble at the free-throw line. When she made the first of two shots, volume was restored tenfold, Tiyanna Gibbs and Taylor Azer gave her a enthusiastic hug, the game was stopped mo-mentarily and Doogan had No. 1,000. We are so proud of Meghan and wish her continued success at Bos-
ton next year!
BASKETBALL Concord Girls Basketball Started this season with a 3 point loss at St.
Marks, after which the team went on to win the next 5 games, ending
2013 with the Delaware Cup Championship of the Diamond State
Classic. The championship was sealed with a 39-32 win over St.
Marks, avenging the earlier loss.
The team then lost to Caravel, followed by wins over Archmere
Academy and Brandywine. The following two games against Smyrna
and Ursuline resulted in losses, leaving the team at 7-4. Following the
2nd winter storm, the team is looking to return to success for the 2nd
half of the season.

SCIENCE NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Concord High School chapter of the Science National Honor Society (SNHS) encourages students to develop an interest in science and to actively involve themselves in science at Concord and in the scientific community. Science club meetings are sponsored by SNHS and are held regularly during three lunch periods to discuss significant scientific topics and advancements. Some of the topics discussed include alternative energy, nanotechnology, dream research, and stem-cell research. Concord's SNHS also places great value in community outreach and getting children excited about science. In January, members had the fantastic oppor-tunity to volunteer at Hagley Museum’s annual Invention Convention. At the convention, members greeted families and assisted children with the creation of unique inventions. They also helped out at the tinkering tables and at the activity tables where children had the opportunity to experience exciting science activities. In March, SNHS will also participate in Lancashire Elementary School’s science expo by presenting demonstrations, scientific activities, and other hands-on experiences for the children to enjoy.

CHS KITCHEN SINK COOKIES At one time there was a recipe for CHS Kitchen Sink Cookies. While there are many variations of Kitchen Sink cookies, we cannot seem to locate the original CONCORD HIGH SCHOOL recipe. SHREK THE MUSICAL
The Concord Players make musical history once again when they present SHREK the MUSICAL on May 1, 2 and 3, 2014. This will be a first at Concord and we will be one of the first high schools to produce this animated feature brought to the musical stage. SHREK THE MUSICAL, based on the DreamWorks film that started it all, brings the hilarious story of everyone's favorite ogre to daz-zling new life on the stage. In a faraway kingdom turned upside down, things get ugly when an unseemly ogre - not a handsome prince - shows up to rescue a feisty princess. Throw in a donkey who won't shut up, a bad guy with a SHORT temper, a cookie with an attitude and over a dozen other fairy tale misfits, and you've got the kind of mess that calls for a real hero. Luckily, there's one on hand...and his name is Shrek. A production that will appeal to all ages. Children love the antics of the storybook characters and adults love the irreverent behav-ior and clever dialogue. Auditions are occurring in late Jan./early Feb. with direction by Tom Marshall, Choreography by Jody Anderson and Technical Di-rection by Reagan Ganis. Anyone interested in being involved in the production (students and adults) should contact Tom Marshall ([email protected]) Performances will be May 1, 2 and 3 with an additional matinee on May 3rd. Tickets are available by calling the main office, 475-3951 and are $11 for Adults and $8 for Students/Senior Citizens.
