A Q U A R T E R L Y U P D A T E F O R O U R C U S T O M E R S New Electronics Law Takes Effect July 1, 2013 In our 2012 state legislative session, a new law was passed based on SB12-133 that will ban consumer landfill disposal of certain electronic devices after July 1, 2013. The law also requires responsible recycling by state agencies. The law was passed to encourage recycling of electronics to help protect the Colorado environ- ment. Kurt and Marta Pyatt. Current Colorado law already prohibits businesses from disposing of these items with their trash. What does this mean to you? After July 1, 2013, Colorado residents will no longer be able to place the following electronics in their trash for disposal: Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners are not included in the ban; however, Western cannot collect these items with the regular trash due to separate regula- tions regarding Freon containing appliances. John Tredeaux. Separate fee-based collection services are available for these appliances, and we also accept them for a fee at our Trash and Recycle Center located at 5880 Butte Mill Road in Boulder. Boulder County currently has two permanent electronics drop-off facilities: Western Disposal’s Trash and Recycle Center located at 5880 Butte Mill Road and the Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHaRM) sponsored by the city of Boulder and located at 5030 Old Pearl St. Fees do apply at both facilities. Communities throughout Boulder County and Broomfield County also provide special electronics collection days. Check with your local community for existing programs or new programs that may develop due to the new Colorado state law. We will provide information again regarding the new electronics law in our spring newsletter to remind you of the changes coming July 1, 2013. If you have weekly residential trashservice and have extra bags of trash toset out on your collection day, you havetwo options to pay for additional trash: 1) purchase prepaid stickers for $3.30each and attach one to each 32-gallonbag of trash; or 2) set extra bags outwithout a sticker and $4.35 per 32-gallon bag will be charged to youraccount. There is a 25% savings if youpurchase the prepaid stickers. Seepurchasing options below.

If you live in Lafayette or Louisville,prepaid stickers are only available forpurchase from the city offices. The priceof the stickers is determined by the city.

Shred-It Results Thank you for attending our free shredding events in 2012. Western’s threefree shredding days were again a big success. We shredded and recycled77,440 lbs. of material—a 28% increase over our 2011 volume! Over 1900vehicles came, also a 28% increase over 2011. Thanks to you and the volume of paper materials recycled, the following resources were saved:

n 640 trees*n 256,000 gallons of water*n 6,400 gallons of gasoline*

We will be scheduling three more events next year with our partner Shred-It. Look for an announcement of the 2013 dates in our springnewsletter. See you next year!

Crayons to Calculators is a program under Impact onEducation, a non-profit organization, and provides backpacks and school supplies for children in need inBoulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley school districts; an

estimated 15,000-20,000 children qualify for a backpack. For the 2012-2013school year, Crayons to Calculators was able to provide backpacks to over8,000 students. James M Fudge and Donna Hamilton.
