New Electronics Law Takes Effect July 1, 2013 In our 2012 state legislative session, a new law was passed based on SB12-133that will ban consumer landfill disposal of certain electronic devices after July 1,2013. The law also requires responsible recycling by state agencies. The law waspassed to encourage recycling of electronics to help protect the Colorado environ-ment. Kurt and Marta Pyatt. Current Colorado law already prohibits businessesfrom disposing of these items with their trash. What does this mean to you?
After July 1, 2013, Colorado residents will no longer be able to place the followingelectronics in their trash for disposal:
Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners are not included in the ban; however,Western cannot collect these items with the regular trash due to separate regula-tions regarding Freon containing appliances. John Tredeaux. Separate fee-basedcollection services are available for these appliances, and we also accept them fora fee at our Trash and Recycle Center located at 5880 Butte Mill Road in Boulder.
Boulder County currently has two permanent electronics drop-off facilities: Western Disposal’s Trash and Recycle Center located at 5880 Butte Mill Road andthe Center for Hard-to-Recycle Materials (CHaRM) sponsored by the city of Boulderand located at 5030 Old Pearl St. Fees do apply at both facilities.
Communities throughout Boulder County and Broomfield County also provide special electronics collection days. Check with your local community for existingprograms or new programs that may develop due to the new Colorado state law.
We will provide information again regarding the new electronics law in our springnewsletter to remind you of the changes coming July 1, 2013. In the interim, pleasebe environmentally responsible and recycle your electronics at Western or CHaRM.
