Triomphe; the miles and miles of steps we took along the famed streets of the Champs d’Elysees; to the steps taken along our tour of The Louvre; and finally the steps leading upwards to Le Sacre Coeur at Montmartre – this 50-year-old was feeling her age (but in a good way)! And i would be remiss if i didn’t mention our day visit out to the Palace of Versailles, in all its grandeur. Stories of Marie Antoinette and King Louis XV (the Sun King) were recounted for us along the way. And carrying on with our “keeping this gal in shape” theme, i opted to participate in the planned bike ride around the magnificent lake at the Palace. now, had i known it was 5 miles round trip, i may have thought twice. But the good news is, i made it – and probably worked off my 2-hour sumptuous lunch at Versailles’s La Flotille Restaurant. Suffice to say, i never met a meal in Paris i didn’t like! Although the majority of our activities were planned out for us, my girlfriend and i had plenty of time to explore wine, dine and shop the streets of both London and Paris! One of our favorite finds in Paris, which we stumbled upon one

afternoon, turned out to be a famous little tea room called La Duree situated along Rue du Royale, just up the street from the Obelisk Monument and adjacent to the Champs Elysee. We learned quickly that they were famous for their macaroons and other great French pastries. it didn’t take us long to choose from their wide assortment of pastries and over 50 different teas! it was hard to say good-bye to these wonderful two cities, so i will just say a “bientot!” (until we meet again!).

two of these Adventures previously with my family – and both were “over the top”! nothing but 4- and 5-star hotels for us gals! Returning to jolly ‘ol England with my girlfriend was a whole new experience! She’d not visited Great Britain before, so i had fun educating her on the little fun nuances of their language along the way, especially with such fun British colloquialisms as, “where’s the loo?” (restroom); and, “look at the Bobbies” (policemen); and “Bob’s your uncle” (there you go!). London was just as i had remembered it, with grand architecture, pomp and circumstance, and a little fun whimsy thrown in too! Our highlights of London included a performance of Disney’s “The Lion King” at the Lyceum Theatre (with a surprise backstage tour after the show); a walk through the park to visit

Buckingham Palace and the changing of the guard; a privately guided tour through Westminster Abbey; and an ‘ol fashioned original double-decker-bus ride through the streets of London. And, a visit to the Tower Bridge and Tower of London with all its majesty! My favorite however, was our “high tea” service at the famed Harrods Department Store, and shopping throughout this magnificent masterpiece afterwards! We were then whisked away from England aboard the high-speed Eurostar train, traversing the English Channel underwater through “The Chunnel” at speeds of 189 mph en route to Paris! Our First Class seats, with breakfast service,

were a nice treat to be sure! Three-and-a-half hours later, we were in the beautiful city

of Paris at Gard du Nord train station. After a brief city tour via motor

coach, and an introduction to our French guide, Sophie, we were told a fun surprise was in store! We stopped at a nearby parc where we were taught the art of the French game, “petanque” which similar

to the italian game of bocce ball. We divided into teams and played

petanque, and then one of our two Disney Adventure guides, Francesc, arrived with

authentic, fresh, French baguettes, cheese, and le pain chocolat for all to devour! Our next four days in Paris were filled from morning ‘til night! At times, sensory overload to be sure, as we filled ourselves with food, wine, song, sites, and all that the Parisian culture exudes! The French Bautobus ferried us down the Seine River to the La Tour Eiffel the next day, where our private lunch atop Altitude 95 was awaiting us! The views were magnifique bien sur, and our cuisine & service tres bon! By the third day, i had dubbed our tour, “The Cities of Knights and heights”, as i don’t recall climbing so many steps in a four-day period in my entire lifetime! Between the subway steps; the steps of Notre Dame; the steps up to L’arc du

Twenty-nine years ago, at the ripe young age of 21, i ventured out on my first independent trip to London, England. Those were the good ‘ol days when a

nonstop flight from LAX to London on Freddy Laker Airlines ran you about $500 round trip! Memories of Big Ben; candy-apple red double-decker buses (that were larger than life); Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum; Windsor Castle; the Tower of London, the Thames River, Buckingham Palace; Piccadilly Square, the London Tube; the famed West End Theatre District and the London pub scene are all fond memories i hold dear to my heart forever. Several years later, famed icons such as notre Dame, La Tour Eiffel, Montmartre, The Louvre, the Seine River, the Champs-Elysees, and all of Paris’ magnificent sights, lights, and tastes - from crepes chocolat to succulent sweet French pastries - also established a firm place within me from my later travels to Paris as a young woman. now, happily married, and approaching that BiG 50 milestone, i wanted to plan something special to celebrate! So, when an opportunity to visit London & Paris came along again, i convinced my husband and 14-year old son that i needed some “girl time” to mark this special occasion! And – Voila! - Vive la vie! i phoned my girlfriend on the East Coast, and we were set to meet up for our tour with its starting point in jolly ‘ol England! We chose Adventure by Disney’s “Cities of Knights and Lights” tour. What we loved about the itinerary was that all of the “thinking” about what to include and plan was already done for us! Most of our meals, transportation within, and special, fun surprises were already included! Although we didn’t choose one of the “adult-only” group departures, we landed with a nice size group of 21 (17 adults and 4 kids). We knew we’d be in good hands with the Disney folks, as i had taken

Cruising the Last Frontier

Why Travel?By Billie J. Ruff

Continued from Page 1

out of the water around us, and we kept our eyes peeled for a hopeful glance at sea otters. I have to say, however, that the highlight of the trip for me was what happened on our whale watching tour in Juneau. On normal whale watching guided boat trips, guests almost always see humpback whales due to the experience of the guides on the boats. They know where to find today’s pods of whales. Not only did we experience the ethereal views and sounds of humpback whales as they glide upward to broach the calm surface of the water, we experienced the very rare view of what our guide called “bubble feeding.” Bubble feeding occurs when six to twenty plus humpback whales gather together almost as if by force of nature. They swim in an oval beneath the surface of the water. Their swimming creates a funnel effect that traps hundreds of thousands of fish; primarily herring, which becomes their feast. As the circle of bubbles begins to form on the surface of the water, the high-pitched sound of the whales’ song grows in intensity and at the highest pitch they lunge out of the water, mouths wide open in spans of up to eight feet wide to swallow their treat and gracefully fall back into the water almost soundlessly. It is one of the most majestic sights I’ve ever witnessed. I’ve got goose bumps just writing about it now and I feel so very fortunate to have such an unexpected opportunity to see these unique wonders of our planet. Alaska offers these and so many more regal experiences and I highly recommend a cruise here. It will bring you so close to nature without sacrificing the comfort you deserve. My heart tells me this will be the first of many visits to the land of the midnight sun.Billie J. Ruff CTC, ACC, CTE

While on a trip, most travelers rate their health one complete point higher (on a scale of 1-5) than normal. Leisure activities improve your physical and mental health - it’s one of the few win-win opportunities around! Just thinking about a trip beforehand increases positive feelings about life in general. And traveling reconnects families. As you explore new places together, you can’t help but concentrate on each other and grow closer. In fact, women who take more vacations are more satisfied with their marriages - and forty-two percent of travelers feel more romantic on vacation - and one third admit to making love more often while traveling. Which leads to the not so surprising fact that spending time away from your everyday world provides numerous benefits to your career and social life. Three out of four executives believe that vacations prevent burnout and increase job performance, and 68% of them believe that time away improves personal creativity. The top rated corporations in the country, like

PricewaterhouseCoopers, tracks employees and sends them reminders that they should take vacations. And a Cincinnati based maintenance services company found that after a more liberal vacation policy went into effect, employee turnover dropped and morale and productivity rose. And then there’s the pure fun of it all. Seeing incredible art and history, eating exotic foods, meeting new people and discovering for yourself that with all the bad news the media throws at us, the world is mostly full of warm, accepting people that would love to get to know you.

Everyone has their own reasons for roaming the globe - whether it’s to learn about other cultures, because travel is good for your health, or it’s just

plain fun to discover and explore new things. Traveling is the best education you’ll ever have. It will open your eyes to new ways of life and help you gain a new perspective and wisdom when it comes to looking at your own life. When you stand outside of something looking in, it changes the way you look at everything. A lot of people believe that traveling is a “grass roots” movement toward world peace; okay, it may sound like a stretch at first, but think about it - most of the fears we have about other cultures are because we don’t know them…and they are, in a word, “foreign” to us. When you meet new cultures, you can’t help but realize they have different foods, dress, languages and traditions…but everyone is basically the same in their desire for safety, love, and happiness. Granted, we can’t have the same large impact as governments, but peoples of the world getting to know each other can only help to bring the world community closer together. Maybe that’s why at the first Global Summit on Peace through Tourism, more than 450 world leaders recognized travel and tourism as a “global peace industry.” Believe it or not, visiting the world will help you live longer and feel better. It’s a proven fact that an annual vacation can cut a person’s risk of heart attack by fifty percent - and blood pressure, heart rate, and levels of epinephrine (a stress hormone) decline after just one or two days on vacation. Most travelers sleep better on vacation and get three times more deep sleep after returning home.

Sue Rydquist has teamed with Travel Café to offer Wine Lovers Wednesdays. Learn more about Sue and more about the events on page 2.

Sue Rydquist, a Montana native, graduated West high in 1984. She followed an early career path with Uhaul international, and during her 15 years with Uhaul, worked her way up through the ranks of the retail giant. her career with Uhaul took her to Phoenix, Pittsburgh, and finally to Boise where both her sons, Eric, 15 and Grant, 13 were born. Sue always knew she wanted to raise her children in Billings where they were assured a great education and they could be

close to their grandparents. in 1995, the family packed up and settled back in Billings. Sue started her second career as a mortgage banker. She fully enjoyed the challenge of finding the right home loan for her clients and building what have turned out to be lasting relationships throughout the community. in 2004, Sue met and married Stephan Bradley and dragged him from his southern roots to Billings where he continued his engineering career with DOWL hKM. After 10 years in the mortgage business, Sue took a break to research a lifelong dream of owning her own business. it took

only a few short months to decide that the market in Billings could support a new retail wine store, and that was exactly the type of business that fit her goals. With a solid background in retail and finance, and love of wine, Sue created a business plan for Simply Wine. The plan was to fill a soft spot in the market for affordable unique wine and to grow a customer base while learning more and more about wine. October 2008 was a hallmark month for Sue and Simply Wine. Simply Wine celebrated its’ 3rd anniversary and was voted “Favorite Wine Store” by the Billings Gazette’s Reader’s Choice campaign. The store also opened a new section called “Reserve Street” meant to

fit the needs of a maturing customer base which focuses on wines above $30. Simply Wine also partnered with Travel Café, which allows Sue to design wine tastings and invite her customers for the first time. in October, Sue was invited to be a member of the Guild of Master Sommeliers. After completing the necessary course work and testing rounds she was rewarded with the title Certified Sommelier. Though that is a significant accomplishment, there is still a tremendous amount to learn. And even though Simply Wine has achieved an unexpected amount of success in just 3 years, Sue considers it a starting point and is looking forward to whatever comes next.

Standing at the edge of a rainbow field of wildflowers, you admire nature’s quiet and epic majesty. Then, something stirs — a rustling in the brush as a huge moose rises from rest and wanders off. A moment like this could only happen in Alaska. Welcome to the Great Land.

You never forget them — the vivid impressions from your first visit to Alaska. A 10-story crystal-blue river of ice in Glacier Bay National Park, icebergs calving into the tidewater with a thunderous crack. The spectacular and untamed wildlife, from a nesting eagle high in a Sitka spruce to a family of brown bears foraging along a rocky beach. Your first glimpse of the soaring, silent magnificence of Mt. McKinley. It’s everything you ever imagined — and all you traveled so far to see. This is one of life’s greatest adventures. One you’ll want to plan carefully so you don’t miss a thing.
