For almost 50 years, two compassionate brothers have joined with the North Shore-LIJ Health Sys-tem in its mission to keep pace with the increasing demand for top-quality healthcare in our region.

Beginning with the purchase of an X-ray machine for North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) in memory of their father, Maurice (“Sonny”) Cohn of Manhasset and Milton (“Bud”) Cohn of Kings Point — along with their wives, Marilyn and Lucille — have proven that generosity runs in the family by supporting a wide variety of initiatives throughout the health system. Most recently, the Cohns funded enhancements to the emergency departments of NSUH and LIJ Medical Center.

Due to the benevolence of Marilyn and Sonny Cohn, a life-time trustee, in 2002 North Shore-LIJ celebrated the comple-tion of the Marilyn and Maurice Cohn Trauma Center — the first phase of an ongoing multi-million dollar upgrade to the emergency department at NSUH. “Almost everyone has a story about visiting the emergency room at some point in their lives, and so I felt it would be very worthwhile and practical to give back to the community in this manner,” said Sonny.

center also includes a 60-seat teaching facility for the purpose of educating professionals in the field of emergency medicine.

Inspired to further the family tradition of underwriting top-quality emergency healthcare on Long Island, in 2005 Lucille and Bud Cohn made a gift endowing the Dorothy and Max Cohn Trauma Center at LIJ — honoring Sonny or Bud’s late parents. “I decided that my parents deserved to have something so important named after them,” said Bud.

Community Health

The health system’s relationship with the diverse communities it serves does not begin and end at the hospital door. Through a range of community health and public education programs, North Shore-LIJ extends into the hundreds of neighborhoods where our patients live.

EducationThe North Shore-LIJ Health System is committed to fostering a culture of lifelong learning and developing leaders at all levels.

North Shore-LIJ is expanding health-care access to the uninsured, many of whom are now served through initiatives like the Pediatric Mobile Health Center van, which treats chil-dren in disadvan-taged communities.

The Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism helps families to obtain comprehen-sive assessments, family support and information on the latest research.

The Patient Safety Institute, part of North Shore-LIJ’s Center for Learning and Innovation, features a high-tech simulation lab with lifelike comput-erized mannequins that allow doctors and nurses to practice their clinical skills in a medical emergency.

Jeff Immelt, chairman and CEO of GE, announces the opening of the North Shore-LIJ Center for Learning and Innovation (CLI). By offering employees the opportunity to participate in a number of innovative work-shops, CLI assists in the development of knowledge, attitude and skills necessary to support the health system’s strategic and business goals.

A Vision for the Years AheadNow that one extraordinary decade has drawn to a close, the North Shore-LIJ Health System is focusing on the future — and quite a bright future it is shaping up to be. Thanks in large part to the generosity of community members committed to the success of the health system, the next 10 years will usher in unprecedented growth and innovation across all North Shore-LIJ hospitals, facilities and programs. A few highlights include:◾ Expansion of Schneider Children’s Hospital. A $144 million expansion of Schneider Chil-dren’s Hospital (SCH) is already underway with the construction of an expanded Neo-Natal Intensive Care Unit and a four-story, glass-enclosed atrium. Eventually, the “new” SCH will feature an Inpatient Tower housing the New York region’s only stand-alone pedi-atric emergency department.◾ Creation of the Katz Women’s Hospitals.

With the support of Saul B. Katz, chairman of the North Shore-LIJ Board of Trustees, and his wife, Iris, an associate trustee, North Shore-LIJ will invest more than $200 million to establish the Katz Women’s Hospitals on the campuses of LIJ Medical Center and North Shore University Hospital, offering advanced obstetrical services and other clinical programs in a comforting, elegant environment.◾ Expansion of The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Construction on the 60,000-square-foot addition to The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research is nearing com-pletion and will make room for new and expanded programs in both basic science and

clinical research.◾ Establishment of a medical school. The North Shore-LIJ Health System and Hofstra University recently announced a partnership to create what will be Nassau County’s first allopathic medical school on the Hofstra campus by fall 2011.

◾ Growth of the Center for Advanced Medicine. Since opening in 2005, the Center for Advanced Medicine has become home to five outstanding outpatient programs, making it the largest ambulatory care facility on Long Island — and it will continue to expand as new programs and services are introduced in the coming years. Additionally, the Monter Cancer Center will undergo its second phase of construction, resulting in expanded offerings and the relocation of physicians cur-rently based at LIJ Medical Center.◾ Advancement of the kidney transplant program. This fall North Shore University Hospital (NSUH) celebrated a newsworthy milestone when it performed its first kidney transplant surgery — and inaugurated the first kidney

transplant program in Nassau and Queens Counties — on a woman whose fiancé served as the donor. NSUH anticipates performing about 15 transplants in the next year, with that number expected to climb to 100 annually after three years.◾ Expansion of the Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience. The Harvey Cushing Institutes of Neuroscience will be expanding over the next several years. Uti-lizing the same strategy that has made the Chiari Institute and the Movement Disor-ders Institute so successful, North Shore-LIJ will be building multidisciplinary clinical teams to offer the highest level of care in a number of specialty areas. ✹
