Welcome to Churchill Middle School! Churchill has so much to offer students including a well-trained and motivated staff dedicated to making sure that Churchill students receive the best education possible. Our commitment is simple – we call it our 4R’s. Rigor - Churchill is committed to creating and maintaining an academic environment that develops the capacity of ALL students to understand content that is complex, ambiguous, provocative and personally or emotionally challenging. Relevancy - Churchill is committed to creating and maintaining an academic program that is timely and relevant. Relationships - Churchill is committed to creating and maintaining a positive and welcoming environment for all students, staff, parents and community members. Results - Churchill is committed to measurable educational improvements.

Churchill is known throughout the region for our IB (International Baccalaureate) program, this will be our third year of transition into a whole school IB Program. Our traditional IBMYP students will be in the IB Diplomat Program. They will continue to be in the same rigorous, accelerated classes our community has been accustomed to for years. Our IB Ambassador Program is for our neighborhood students. They will receive the same powerful IB units, lessons, and pedagogy but delivered at a level that will ensure their success and engagement. Our academic programs, combined with our school-to-college/career electives give each student a strong educational foundation as they prepare for high school and ultimately enroll in college. Additionally, we are proud to report that Churchill’s staff has been and will continue to develop and implement lessons which enable students to access and meet the goals of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). In accordance with our site strategic plan, we are implementing a homeroom period for all students. Through this period, students will focus on: maintaining a positive school climate, developing successful character traits, and creating, revising, and ultimately achieving academic and behavioral goals. We look forward to working with the staff, parents, students and our Carmichael community to ensure that our students receive the best education possible. Again, welcome to Churchill!

Sincerely, Winston Churchill Middle School Staff

CAMPUS SAFETY, PROCEDURES, AND STUDENT DISCIPLINE Our goal is to provide a safe and secure learning environment. In addition to the guidelines and expectations discussed earlier, the following also contribute to this goal. SJUSD Discipline Code: The governing board of the San Juan Unified School District and the Superintendent are supportive of a philosophy that provides students with a safe learning environment. To help make this possible, the Middle Schools Division has developed a discipline code that uniformly deals with students who commit major infractions of stated behavioral rules. A copy of these major infractions and consequences is provided when you receive your agenda. For additional copies please contact the Churchill Main Office. Safe School's Officers: Officers are assigned to each school within the San Juan Unified School District. These officers are deputies for the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. They are welcome guests on our campus. The officers are considered important partners with the school as they visit with staff and students or when assisting with serious behavioral incidents Visitors / Guests on Campus: Parents and other adults may visit campus. All visitors must register at the school office and wear a visitor's pass while on campus. Student visitors are not permitted, except on specially arranged visitation days. Parents are encouraged to visit the school and their student's classrooms. Parent conferences may be arranged by contacting the school counselor. A 24 hour notice is required prior to classroom visitation.

Arrival/Departure: To ensure adequate adult supervision, students may not arrive more than 15 minutes prior to school starting. The halls are closed 15 minutes after dismissal. Students are expected to leave campus within 20 minutes. Students may remain on campus and within the classrooms if participating in an approved/supervised activity. Closed Campus: You are required to stay on campus once you arrive at school. If you leave campus without being signed out by a parent or guardian or without office-verified permission, you will be subject to disciplinary action. The creek behind Churchill is not a part of our campus. Any student at the creek during the school day is considered to be off campus and consequences will be given.

Staff I.D. Badges: All SJUSD employees are required to wear I.D. badges during the school day. Visitors are required to wear a Visitor's Pass issued by the office. These badges will help you identify people who have permission to be on our campus. Should you see anyone without an appropriate I.D. Badge, you should notify the nearest staff member or administrator. Student I.D. Cards: You will receive a picture I.D. within the first two weeks of school. As a part of our school-wide safety plan students must have their ID card with them at school every day. You will need to use it throughout the year for such things as lunch line order, admission to dances, checking out books in the library, computer usage, checking out sports equipment at lunch and much more.

Page 9: Winston Churchill Middle School - San Juan Unified School ......Welcome to Churchill Middle School! Churchill has much to offer students including a wellso -trained and motivated staff

I

If your picture I. D. card is lost or stolen, you may purchase a replacement at the Library. The cost of a new I.D. card is $5. It generally takes 2-3 days to make a replacement card. Remember, you need to have your ID with you every day. Drills: As part of our Safety Plan, we have designed a series of different "safety drills" to help us practice for any emergency. These drills will be held regularly. Student cooperation is required. These drills include Evacuation, Shelter-in-Place", and Lock Down. Electronic devices: May be brought to and used on campus for academic purposes. They may never be used in the restroom, locker room, or to take inappropriate pictures/videos. These devices should be turned off and out of sight (this includes ear buds and headphones) in all academic settings and hallways during school hours. Emergency Cards: It is very important that you help us maintain accurate and up-to-date emergency information. If you move, change phone numbers, or your parents change work phone numbers, the office must be notified immediately. Parents can complete online Emergency Cards through the Parent Portal, or complete a handwritten form. Lockers: Each student is assigned a hall locker to be used only by that student. Please, NO SHARING. Students will have a lock checked out to them. Students are responsible for returning their lock to the school at the end of the year. If they lose their lock, there is a $10.00 fine/replacement fee. Students are not to move lockers without approval from the office. Backpacks: Backpacks, book bags, backpack purses, PE bags and purses are to be used to transport materials to and from school only. Students need to store their backpacks, book bags, P.E. clothes bag, backpack purses, and purses in their lockers throughout the day. Books: Textbooks are issued to students at the beginning of the year and are the complete responsibility of that student until returned. Fines are assessed for the replacement of damaged or lost textbooks. Textbooks need to be covered for protection. Please note that self-adhesive book covers are not acceptable and their use can result in fines for damaged books. Hallway Passes: Students needing to be out of the classroom for any reason must have their own Hallway Passport completed and signed by the teacher. This Hallway Passport can be found at the back of student planner and must not be detached. Passes are not usually given during the first 10 minutes or the last 10 minutes of an instructional period. Restrooms should be used between classes or during lunchtime. Students who fail to have an appropriate pass will be returned to the classroom.

ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS

In an academic environment students should take the responsibility to record and complete their assignments on the due date assigned by the teacher. In all classes students will be assigned: classwork, homework, long and short term projects, and both formative and

Page 10: Winston Churchill Middle School - San Juan Unified School ......Welcome to Churchill Middle School! Churchill has much to offer students including a wellso -trained and motivated staff

J

You should expect a minimum of one hour of homework each school night. Accelerated classes may require additional homework time. All students are expected to show up to all their classes prepared with books, supplies and completed homework. • Required School Supplies

o Large three-ring binder. The spine of the binder should be 1 1/2 to 2 inches. Dividers should be labeled and then placed in the rings of the binder. All papers should be hole-punched and then placed in the rings of the

binder. Papers should be stored behind the appropriate divider.

Students are required to use the Planner all year. o 6 labeled dividers o Binder paper o For PE: Mead Five-Star Stay-Put folder o Additional materials may be needed at teacher discretion.

• Make-up Work: If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain the make-up work from

the teacher and to make sure it is completed within a reasonable time, not to exceed the number of days of the absence. There is one make-up day for each excused day of absence. Assignments due during an absence should be turned in to the appropriate teacher the first day back to school.

• Homework Requests: If a student is absent 3 or more days due to an excused absence,

homework may be requested by calling the office and will be available within 24 hours. • Academic Conferences: Parents can request a conference to address their student's

academic progress by contacting the teacher, counselor, or administrator. These conferences may be held before school, during the teacher's prep period, or after school.

• Q Parent Portal & Student Portal – Online Grades: The SJUSD Parent & Student Portal provides parents and families with easy and timely access to student grade and attendance information online 24/7. Parents and students are expected to regularly check this site to monitor student progress. Links to the portals are on Churchill’s website. Parents can use their password to see any of their students’ records on the Parent Portal. It’s URL address is https://sis.sanjuan.edu/parentportal If you need a password or your password/ PIN does not work, please contact the Registrar at

• Promotion/Retention: Promotion to the next grade level will be based on the following:

o Demonstration of grade level proficiency in reading, English and math on the CAASPP Test and assessments on SJUSD and state course standards.

o If you average less than a "D" in any academic class or fail to reach proficiency levels on district standards, you will be excluded from all 6th, 7th and 8th grade end of the year celebrations. Final decisions about promotion/retention will be left to the discretion of the Churchill Middle School administration.

M

• INDEPENDENT STUDY: Is the only means through which students can acquire homework

in advance when they know they will be absent for five days or more. Parents need to contact the counselor 10 days in advance in order to start the independent study contract. Independent study contracts are an agreement with the District and are scrutinized by SJUSD personnel. Students who properly complete the contract receive credit for being here. Churchill does not issue Independent study contracts after the 1st of May.

HEALTH SERVICES

• Illness: There are limited health services available at Churchill. Students who become ill

during the school day will need to call a parent and go home immediately. Emergency situations at Churchill are handled by calling 911. It is imperative that emergency card phone numbers are kept updated at all times.

• Medication: School personnel may store and/or dispense prescribed medication to pupils.

Medications must be in the original container and accompanied by physician's orders and the completed SJUSD Medication Form. Medication is not to be carried by students during the school day, except for prescription inhalers. Students may carry an inhaler provided a medication form signed by the prescribing physician and parent is on file with the school.

• First Aid: We may not have a school nurse. For injuries/illnesses beyond minor first aid,

we will notify your parent and/or call 911 as necessary.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES Students' participation in any school related activity is based on good attendance and citizenship, satisfactory academic performance and a positive discipline history. Social activities, such as dances, BBQs, field trips, school sponsored athletics, and other school-sponsored special events are privileges, which require satisfactory school performance and behavior of students, in order to attend. Students who have been suspended or truant will not be allowed to attend school-sponsored events during the academic “quarter” of their suspension. We call this our “Four Quarters.” Page P has a chart that indicates events you will not be allowed to attend if you are suspended. In addition to suspensions and truancies, all students accumulating a total of 3 or more referrals from at least 2 different teachers between the dates of April 1st and the last day of school will be unable to participate in any of the 6th, 7th, or 8th grade end-of-year activities. An appeal process is available. Final decisions about participation in social activities will be left to the discretion of the Churchill Middle School administration. Dances: Dances are some of the more popular social events of the year. Attending a dance is a privilege. Only Winston Churchill students may attend (no exceptions). The dress code will be enforced. You must present a signed dance bid and your picture ID. card for admission.

Students arriving to a dance without their ID card can have their attendance verified and a replacement ID card ordered for a $5.00 fee. The cost of the dance includes the DJ, supervision, pizza, and beverages. Students must be picked up immediately after the dance to avoid being excluded from the next event. Tentative Dates and Times for 2019-2020 Dances: Fri., Sep. 6th, 2019 - All grades welcome Fri., Dec. 6th, 2019 - All grades welcome Fri., Feb. 7th, 2020 - All grades welcome Fri., April 17th, 2020 - Proud To Be Awesome Dance (Invite Only) Fri., June 5th, 2020 - 8th Grade Dance Dance times are from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Sports: We encourage our students to participate on an athletic team. These programs are offered through SJUSD and Mission Oaks Recreation and Park District. Often more than one team on each grade level is available, which allows more opportunity for students to play. Sports, for both boys and girls, include: flag football and volleyball in the fall, basketball and wrestling in the winter and track in the spring. School rules and positive sportsmanship are expected from spectators and participants. To learn more and register for sports go to https://www.sanjuan.edu/Page/6354 or www.morpd.com or call (916) 488-7276. Fliers will be made available in the front office. Student Leadership: All students are encouraged to be leaders on the Churchill campus. One way is to participate in the Student Leadership elective class. The cabinet officers are elected each spring for the upcoming school year. Any student interested in being a member of Student Leadership for the following year are encouraged to apply in the spring. There are opportunities for all students to get involved in student leadership activities both during lunch and after school.

No one will be denied participation in an academic field trip due to a financial reason. If you need assistance, please ask. You must have a positive attendance and discipline history. You may be excluded (social probation) or required to have your parent attend the field trip with you. Students with failing grades or “U’s” in citizenship may be denied participation in the field trip. You are expected to demonstrate appropriate behavior on each trip. Failure to do so may result in you being returned immediately to your parents.

Assemblies: The student body will be privileged to have assemblies, which are theme-based and intended to enrich the educational experience of all students. Rallies/Assemblies: The student body will be privileged to participate in rallies/assemblies, which are theme-based and intended to enrich the educational experience of all students.

BRIDGES AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM

The San Juan Unified School District's comprehensive Bridges After-School Program provides academic intervention and pro-social enrichment in a safe and positive environment. The Bridges After-School Program currently serves over 3,000 students grades K-12 at 32 sites. Students realize academic success through the implementation of each of the four components of the program: academic support, enrichment/disguised learning, pro-social skills/recreation, and parent support and empowerment. In order for a student to be

R

successful in the program, strong relationships between program staff, school staff, parents and students are needed. Relationships are key!

• To apply for enrollment in the Bridges After-School Program, please complete the Bridges After-School Registration Form, Parent Partnership Agreement and Emergency Form. Send the forms to school with your child to give to the designated Bridges After-School Program Site Coordinator. Space is limited and is available on a first come, first served basis.

RECOGNITION, REWARDS AND INTERVENTIONS

Winston Churchill takes great pride in the accomplishments of its students and in recognizing those students on a regular basis. Whether it is through our Proud to Be Awesome Honor Roll program, acknowledging and rewarding students who are daily making positive academic and social choices on campus, or the other Positive Behavior Support initiatives we implement. We will continue to expand our Top Dog Positive Referral program to validate those students who live up to our school wide BARKS expectations or embody and demonstrate any of our Learner Profile traits. And of course we will continue to reward students with Bulldog Bucks for making Responsible, Respectful, Kind and Safe choices on campus. Students can use their Bulldog Bucks to purchase all kinds of great gifts from snacks, ice cream, and school supplies to lunch with their favorite teacher or gift cards.

Winston Churchill is a PBIS school and dedicates many hours of staff development towards its implementation. Positive Behavior and Intervention Support (PBIS) is an evidence-based approach to behavior management, applied on a school-wide level, a classroom level, and an individual student level. It is not a curriculum; rather, it is a collaborative process that results in interventions designed for the unique needs of our school, classrooms, and individual students.

At a school-wide level, our PBIS team has established a framework of positive stated behavior expectations, Churchill BARKS. They analyze data from office discipline referrals to identify problem areas, and they brainstorm interventions in how to teach and reinforce the behavior expectations. These interventions are primary prevention and are proven to reduce school behavior problems and promote a positive school culture. School behavior teams also work to establish systematic strategies for at-risk students and use functional behavior assessments to develop individualized interventions for students who present the most significant behavior challenges. District-wide PBIS facilitators assist the teams in developing interventions at all three levels.

MYP GLOBAL CONTEXTS Churchill teachers develop holistic learning and international mindedness in students by actively engaging students in each subject in the six Global Contexts. These areas serve as "lenses" through which students explore ideas, investigate connections across and between subject areas, and apply their knowledge to real world problems.

Identities and

relationships

Who am I? Who are we? Students will explore identity; beliefs and values; personal, physical, mental, social and spiritual health; human relationships including families, friends, communities and cultures; what it means to be human.

Orientation in

space and time

What is the meaning of “when” and “where”? Students will explore personal histories; homes and journeys; turning points in humankind; discoveries; explorations and migrations of humankind; the relationships between, and the interconnectedness of, individuals and civilizations, from personal, local and global perspectives.

Personal and

cultural expression

What is the nature and purpose of creative expression? Students will explore the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic.

Globalization and

sustainability

How is everything connected? Students will explore the interconnectedness of human-made systems and communities; the relationship between local and global processes; how local experiences mediate the global; reflect on the opportunities and tensions provided by world interconnectedness; the impact of decision-making on humankind and the environment.

Fairness and development

What are the consequences of our common humanity? Students will explore rights and responsibilities; the relationship between communities; sharing finite resources with other people and with other living things; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.

Scientific and Technical

Innovation

How do we understand the worlds in which we live? Students will explore the natural world and its laws; the interaction between people and the natural world; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on communities and environments; the impact of environments on human activity; how humans adapt environments to their needs.

Winston Churchill IBMYP Marks

The following chart outlines the system of IB marks that will be assigned to both diplomat and ambassador students. These marks will be assigned by teachers at the end of each quarter only, not on progress reports. IB schools worldwide use this 1-7 marking system and the associated descriptors. Churchill will continue to assign the traditional A-F letter grades plus O-U citizenship grades. These new IB grades should be viewed as an additional piece of useful communication about a student's progress in their courses. Since these grades focus more on student proficiency instead of accumulation of points, it is possible that you could see a student earn a C for their letter grade but a 6 or 7 for their IB grade. The reverse is also possible. Also remember that the IBMYP program is a journey, the goal is to attain 6-7 marks be the end of year 5 (sophomore year).

Mark Descriptor

1 Minimal achievement in terms of the objectives

2 Very limited achievement against all the objectives. The student has difficulty in understanding the required knowledge and skills and is unable to apply them fully in normal situations, even with support

3 Limited achievement against most of the objectives, or clear difficulties in some areas. The student demonstrates a limited understanding of the required knowledge and skills and is only able to apply them fully in normal situations with support.

4 A good general understanding of the required knowledge and skills and the ability to apply them effectively in normal situations. There is occasional evidence of the skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation

5

A consistent and thorough understanding of the required knowledge and skills, and the ability to apply them in a variety of situations. The student generally shows evidence of analysis, synthesis and evaluation where appropriate and occasionally demonstrates originality and insight.

6

A consistent and thorough understanding of the required knowledge and skills, and the ability to apply them in a wide variety of situations. Consistent evidence of analysis, synthesis and evaluation is shown where appropriate. The student generally demonstrates originality and insight.

7

A consistent and thorough understanding of the required knowledge and skills, and the ability to apply them almost faultlessly in a wide variety of situations. Consistent evidence of analysis, synthesis and evaluation is shown where appropriate. The student consistently demonstrates originality and insight and always produces work of high quality.
