Welcome

Prospectus 2021 open the door to your future

1 winstanley college

Welcome from Nadia – Student Governor

Hi I’m Nadia and I’m the Lower Sixth Student Governor at Winstanley.

When choosing a college I think it's important to go somewhere you’ll be encouraged to achieve the best that you can and be helped every step of the way. What stood out to me about Winstanley was the atmosphere: from teachers to students, everyone here is genuinely so friendly and we have a great pastoral team for whenever we need a little extra support. We’re also guided through the process of choosing our next steps after college whether that's applying for apprenticeships or university, and we get lots of opportunities to go on trips and take part in extracurriculars.

I became student governor after a campaign and election. The role has oered me an insight into the decisions made at a senior level within the College and given me an appreciation for the way in which sta at Winstanley work over and above behind the scenes to ensure the best outcomes for each individual student.

Personal TutorEvery student at Winstanley has a dedicated Personal Tutor who you will meet during your induction into college. You will stay with the same Personal Tutor for two years and will get to know each other well.

There is a Senior Tutor who is in charge of a group of students (ie rst or second years) and acts similarly to a ‘Head of Year’ at school. It will be your Personal Tutor who guides you through college, watching attendance, encouraging progress and guiding on choices for the future.

Personal Tutors should be the rst person you go to for advice and support, especially if you have any concerns. Students see their Personal Tutor in their scheduled tutorial sessions but you can also drop by their oce for a one-to-one chat, or email them if you are in diculty.

At any time, parents are encouraged to contact the Personal Tutor to discuss their son’s/daughter’s progress; however there is a formal opportunity to discuss progress with subject teachers at Parents’ Consultation Days in December.

Student ServicesWe are a friendly bunch at Student Services and our aim is to oer you as much practical help as possible. We have been awarded the Matrix Standard for pastoral guidance in recognition of the service we provide.

Student Services is the main point of call for just about any question that you may have. We oer a one stop shop for all your needs, whether this is attendance, work experience, lockers or university applications.

We also organise all the student transport here and can oer you advice on permits, routes and costs. Sta are also able to give advice on what assistance is available to help with the nancial demands of studying at College.

Attendance is very important at College and it is here too that you would come to explain your absence to the Attendance Ocer – who may also contact parents should there be a query or concern.

Some students may nd starting College a little overwhelming and our aim is to make your transition as smooth as possible. You can access these services in person or via email to the relevant person.

Academic and Personal SupportAt Winstanley, there is a very strong focus on developing the full potential of every individual student, both academic and personal. There are times when you may need support to help you achieve your goals. This could be with your teacher, your Personal Tutor, a Study Support Tutor or an Independent Learning Assistant (ILA).

The ILAs provide one to one or small group study skills support to help boost achievement. Whatever your ability, the ILAs can give you that extra help when you need it by providing you with individualised support.

The Study Support team also provide support for students with specic learning dierences, dyslexia or dyspraxia for example and for students with disabilities. Support is designed to meet individual needs and assessment is completed by specialist tutors. To nd out more, please contact: Linda Jones, the Study Support Manager on [email protected] or 01695 633244.

What Ofsted say about our supportLeaders, managers and teachers ensure that the same ambitious curriculum is accessible to all students, including those who have special educational needs and high needs. For example, they have built a high-specication care suite for students with high needs that are very complex. All students with additional needs benet from a curriculum that includes highly individualised support and care. Consequently, students participate fully in learning and achieve ambitious goals, for example to study at prestigious universities. Ofsted, February 2020.

Apprenticeship with The Bank of England

Tom Aspinall, a former Haydock High School pupil, has secured an apprenticeship with The Bank of England (summer 2020). He will shortly be heading to the iconic Threadneedle street in London to begin his degree apprenticeship in Data Analytics and Modelling..

Tom, who studied for A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, Economics and Computer Science, decided early into college life that he wanted to go down the apprenticeship route. He said: ‘for me there was the obvious benet of having no student loans or debt whilst still getting a degree and also gaining work and life experience. ‘

Apprenticeships

There has been a steady growing interest in

alternative pathways to full-time degree courses

and more students are applying for

apprenticeships or sponsored degrees. These

opportunities can oer young people

progression opportunities to degree level and

beyond. Many students are now recognising the

importance of work-related learning in today's

competitive economy. The college has a Careers

Adviser and Employer Links Co-ordinator, who

specically works with employers and training

providers to nd apprenticeship opportunities

for Winstanley students and support them

through the recruitment and selection processes.

Despite this pathway being very competitive

with applicants often going through rigorous

recruitment and selection processes, the number

of students now entering professions via this

route is increasing year on year.

After studying The Bank in his Economics class, Tom became curious about the opportunities it could oer and had a look at their website where he saw the apprenticeships advertised.

Tom explains: ‘I discovered they had a range of degree apprenticeship courses available. I applied for the digital and technology solutions role as soon as I could and the bank immediately became my rst choice. The recruitment process began with my initial application form, then, after a few weeks, I received an email saying that I had passed this stage and I was invited to take part in a recorded video interview. This felt like a very unnatural process for me as it amounted to me talking into a camera by myself and was the stage in the recruitment process when I felt the most anxiety by far.

A few more weeks went by and I received an email informing me I would be invited to take part in a further assessment. Under normal circumstances this would involve me travelling down to Threadneedle Street, however due to the COVID-19 outbreak the assessment was held online.

Exactly two weeks after my interview I received a call from The Bank telling me that I had beens successful in the assessment centre and I was lled with a mixture of relief and excitement, all my work throughout GCSEs and A levels had paid o. I am looking forward to getting a good degree and pursuing a career in the Capital. I would like to thank Winstanley for giving me the condence, knowledge and aspiration to be able to pursue and achieve this opportunity, especially my teachers and personal tutor who supported me through whatever obstacles I faced.’

Since then: I studied Medicine at Hull York Medical School. Then did a 1 year intercalated Master’s degree between my 4th and 5th years in Clinical Anatomy.

Now: Foundation year 2 Doctor in Scarborough Hospital. In the recent months I’ve been working in the Acute Medical Unit or General Medicine. I have mainly worked on wards where patients with COVID stay. It’s been a really challenging time. Meanwhile, it has brought the healthcare sta so much closer as a team and taught us so much. I’m soon starting a job as Clinical Teaching Fellow at Hull York Medical School, where I will be teaching medical students for a year.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Winstanley TV

Student UnionOn behalf of the Student Union and the

student body as a whole, I welcome you to

Winstanley College. My name is Joe Caygill and

I am the new President of the Student Union.

My role as President is split into

two parts. The rst is to act as a

bridge between pupils and sta.

College life is much more

independent than school and

we have a lot more

responsibility as pupils. This

means that productive

communication is absolutely

vital to ensure that students

have a say in their own learning

and, ultimately, get the most out

of their two years in college.

The second part of my role is to oversee the

smooth running of the Student Union. We have

a Charities Ocer to liaise with our partner

charities, an Events Ocer to coordinate the

various activities run by the Union throughout

the year, an Environment Ocer to help the

college become more green and many more

fantastic members who give up their time to

improve pupils’ experience here at Winstanley.

My role in all of this is simply to delegate – and

let the much more talented people do all the

hard stu!

The Student Union is open to all pupils

throughout the year, both online and in

person, anonymous or not. One thing you can

always be sure of is that the Union will be there

to help.

I look forward to seeing you next year

Amazing AlumniFrom investment bankers to entrepreneurs, we

really have had some prestigious alumni! Here’s just

a couple of examples of what former

students have gone on to do.

Rosie Normanton

Rosie left Winstanley in 2011 and is

now part of the strategy team at

Starling Bank.

Rosie said: ‘I came to Winstanley in

2009 from Lowton High School and

studied for A-levels in Maths,

Further Maths, Economics and

Physics. I chose Winstanley

because of its good academic

reputation and the wide variety of

subjects available.

After college I went on to study

Economics at Cambridge

University. I remember my

Winstanley Economics teacher and

all of the help he gave in

supporting my application to

Cambridge including

arranging an interview with an

old colleague. Without this, I

don’t think I would have got in

and have had all these

opportunities since.

Following my degree, I had

three years working in

investment banks before

leaving to work in the nancial

technology sector. I’m

currently part of the strategy

team at Starling Bank, a digital

app-based mobile bank very

popular with young people.’

Rosie is really enjoying her

work and is keen to help others who may be

interested in applying to Cambridge and or in

following similar routes, especially since she feels

graduates from the North are still underrepresented

within the sector.

Natasha Rhodes

Natasha attended The Westleigh School

before coming to Winstanley, where she

studied between 2010 and 2012. She is now

Domain Architect in the IT department at

Matalan.

Natasha says:

‘I took A-Levels in Graphic Design, English

Language and Literature and IT. I then went

on to study IT Management for Business at the

University of Keele – it was my A-level IT

teacher that inspired me to apply for this and

I’m so glad I did!

I've spent the last 5 years working within the IT

Department at Matalan's Head Oce in

Knowsley, progressing through various roles

and I am now a Domain Architect within the IT

department. I’ve also just started a part-time

Master’s Degree as a distance learner at

Northumbria University.’

We asked Natasha what her advice would be for

students wanting to follow a similar career path, she

told us:

‘If you're interested in an IT career in the future but

want to go to university rst, look into the ITMB (IT

Management for Business) degree that an

organisation called Tech Partnership run. It gives a

great mix of business and IT / technical skills and the

content is written by top employers across the

country.

I'd also suggest looking into the vast roles available

within an IT department - there are lots of roles you

may never have heard of before that might be just

what you're looking for! Often, people just think of a

Developer or Project Manager being IT roles, but

there are many, many more! And nally - whatever your route into an

IT career - it is always exciting, ever changing and a brilliant way to

work for a business. I'd highly recommend it as a career and wish

anyone considering it well.’

In short we oer a huge amount of support inside and outside the classroom to ensure all students reach their full potential.

So what is the subject about? As a highly regarded academic discipline it does have its own key terms, diagrams and academic challenges. Whereas Business looks at how companies operate and complete, Economics goes into far more depth from micro and macro perspectives to identify the actual root causes of problems. From signicant oil price rises to the economics of the oods, recession, stock market turmoil, pollution, housing booms, bank bailouts, motorway road pricing, wage determination, whether you are better or worse o with a living wage and the economics of £9000 per year for university tuition fees.

Economics goes into detail outlining the theory that has been discussed by thinkers for centuries. It can open many pathways to a challenging, fascinating, stimulating and often well paid career, from investment banking, to digital marketing and journalism.

Subject combinationsEconomics, because it is so very career related, can be studied alongside anything, but it goes well with English, Politics, History, Law, Business, Geography, Philosophy, Maths, Computing and the Sciences. International Economics courses are growing in popularity so it can be studied alongside languages. If you are considering an Economics degree later on you should also study Maths, however, the maths content on the Economics A-level course is small.

What will I study?

• Markets and market failure• The UK economy – performance and policies• Business behavior and the labour market• A global perspective

Economics is split into 2 key areas of study – Microeconomics (focused on markets and market failure) and Macroeconomics (focused on national and global economies).

HumanitiesAmazing AlumniThere are so many degrees and careers that studying humanities can lead

to. Here are a couple of examples of what a former students went on to do.

Alex Feis-Bryce

Alex, a former Parklands High School pupil, studied Politics, Philosophy and

History at Winstanley College between 1999 and 2001 and is now the newly

appointed CEO of SurvivorsUK, a trust which helps male, trans, and non-binary

victims of sexual abuse.

Prior to this he was a founder and Director of Services at the National Ugly Mugs

Scheme, to end violence against sex workers. Alex played an integral role in

their journey to becoming a multi award-winning organisation. During his

six-year tenure, he supported thousands of people and made signicant

contributions to local and national policy in the area, advising the Home Oce,

National Crime Agency and the Home Aairs Select Committee.

It’s safe to say that Alex’s outstanding achievements have not gone unnoticed;

in addition to being named on the nal Rainbow List of the 101 most inuential

LGBT+ people in Britain; he was also shortlisted at the Charity Times Awards for

the Rising Star CEO prize, as well as the Inuencer Award at the DSC Social

Change Awards.

Reecting fondly on his ‘transformative’ time at college, Alex commented:

“I really enjoyed studying at Winstanley College,

what I learned there had such a huge influence on

me becoming who I am today.”

Syrah PatelFormer Culcheth High student, Syrah Patel, studied at Winstanley between

2013 and 2015, taking A-levels in Business, Philosophy and Religion and Art and

Design.

Syrah says: ‘I loved college, I made a really good friendship group with whom I

am still very close with today. My teachers motivated and inspired me in a way

that suited my specic learning style, ability and preferences. Philosophy and

Religion was my favourite subject; I had incredible teachers and enjoyed a

college trip to Rome: I made some of my best friends in this class and on this

trip.

After college I went to Leeds Beckett to study Human Resource and Business

Management where I achieved a rst class degree. I then went on to complete

an operations leadership and management scheme.

I am now starting a new venture as an operations manager for THE HUT GROUP,

and have set up my own streetwear brand called commonplace, which is very

exciting.’

Why should I study Philosophy at Winstanley?

Philosophy has been dened as ‘thinking about thinking’. It underpins all other areas of learning and allows you to explore dierent views and consider issues you might not have considered before. How do you know that the world around you actually exists and you aren’t hooked up to some highly complex computer or virtual reality? Is it actually any more moral to kill people in video games than it is to kill people in ‘real’ life?

We cover ideas and theories relating to knowledge, morality, psychology, science and metaphysics amongst many more. We take

Why should I study Philosophy at Winstanley? familiar ideas, pull them apart and investigate the dierent issues that we nd. If you enjoy thinking and reecting on these kinds of questions, then Philosophy is for you.

However, this course does not just introduce these kinds of topics to you, we focus on skills. We will train you in logical thinking and analysis as well as various techniques of argument so you can express your views and write convincingly. Amazing AlumniHere’s a couple of ideas of what studying one or more of these subjects could

lead to.

Joshua Harriette

Josh, a former student of Rainford High School, studied Dance, Theatre Studies and

Business Studies at Winstanley College between 2009 and 2011 before going on to

train at the Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance. He is now a

professional ballet dancer and lighting designer.

Joshua has performed with Michael Clark Company including their productions of

‘Come, Been and Gone’ and ‘Animal Vegetable Mineral’ across America, Brazil and

Europe. He also danced for fashion labels Pringle of Scotland and Alexander

McQueen at the V&A alongside Kate Moss and even performed on the Pyramid

Stage at Glastonbury!

In addition, Joshua joined Sir Matthew Bourne at New Adventures for the creation

and tour of the Olivier Award winning show ‘The Red Shoes’.

Throughout his career, he has also danced with Richard Alston Dance Company,

Ballet Black, English National Ballet, Ballet Boyz and was part of Phoenix Dance

Theatre Choreographers and Composers Lab. Alongside his ‘company work’, Joshua

has modelled for ASOS, Gucci and Puma.

Sophie Straw

Sophie, a former student of Standish High School, studied Physical Education,

Mathematics and Biology at Winstanley College between 2012 and 2014. She has

gone on to secure a prestigious Physiologist position within the English Institute of

Sport (EIS).

Sophie’s role primarily involves working closely with the British Cycling

multi-disciplinary team, including the ‘World Class Programme’; monitoring

athletes, conducting physiological tests, carrying out project work and assisting

other practitioners and coaches with data analysis and feedback.

After leaving college with fantastic results in 2014, Sophie studied Sport and

Exercise Science at Loughborough University, graduating with a First in the

summer of 2018. Determined to stand out from the crowd even further, Sophie

coached Netball for Loughborough’s recreational sport programme during her rst

two years at university and also worked voluntarily as a performance analyst for

Netball Superleague team Loughborough Lightning.

During her third year, Sophie undertook a year-long unpaid work placement at the

EIS in Loughborough. The placement was a supportive physiology role working

predominantly with British Athletics and British Triathlon. Before her placement

began, she was invited to assist with a period of heat acclimation for Team GB's

Paralympic wheelchair athletes in preparation for Rio 2016. Her fascinating year

with EIS also included: supporting British Athletics' altitude programme, travelling

to other EIS sites to assist with sports such as GB Boxing and British Cycling whilst

also conducting her own research project using an Anti-Gravity treadmill.

What is A-Level P.E.?

A-level P.E. allows students to investigate a wide range of issues that inuence a sports performer. This multi-disciplinary course covers physiological, sociological and psychological factors aecting sports performance. It is 70% theory and 30% practical (one sport).

Is A-Level P.E. for me? Why do ice skaters spin quicker if their arms are pulled in rather than straight? What scientic principles can rugby players apply to become more stable and successful at simple moves like tackling? How has technology advanced sports over time? Why do some sports performers underperform when there is a large crowd present whilst others thrive in such situations?

Are you interested in nding answers to these questions? If so, these are just some of the ideas explored in P.E.

Prospectus 2021

Why P.E. at Winstanley? All P.E. sta share a genuine love of their subject, are extremely well-qualied and are experienced examiners. They care about every student and give individual attention to help each student achieve their potential. Results in P.E. are consistently excellent. You can do ANY sport on the syllabus as part of your qualication. New ones have been added to the syllabus for 2020 start, and we include practical lessons as part of the course. We employ a Sport Enrichment Ocer to organise a varied and massive extra-curricular programme as well as employing specialist coaches.

Practical moduleYour practical module is made up of performance in just one sport, a sports log and a piece of coursework where you evaluate another sports performance. Students at Winstanley College have shown that committing to practical sport really does help you achieve a top grade and in 2019, 51.25% of our 80 A Level PE students achieved an A* or A in their practical module.

P.E. lessons and supportLessons are a combination of theory and practical, discussions and experiments, past exam question practice, group work, guided questioning and research. Learning is supported with YouTube clips, linking theory to practical examples in your own sport, video tutorials and online questions. Each student is provided with our in-house work booklets, electronic resources to download from our website, suggested links and discussions on our online Teams pages.

Subject choices P.E. can work well with any choice of other A-levels. There is some overlap with Psychology, Business Studies. Dance, Applied Science, Biology, even Physics – but It’s important to choose subjects you enjoy and will do well at. Sometimes studying a diverse timetable oers a range of skills and can be more interesting.

Beyond A-level By completing A-level P.E. you will be fully-prepared for any related degree such as Sports Science, Physiotherapy or Health Science. Some students choose to further specialise in a specic area of P.E. such as Sports Mechanics or Sports Psychology. We have also had students obtaining scholarships to study Sport in the USA.

Some P.E. students have gone on to study unrelated degrees at top universities such as Dentistry, Pharmacology, Business and Law, proving that P.E. is a valued academic qualication and a useful stepping stone for many. If you are good at a sport and work hard, you will get a top grade allowing you to access the course or career of your choice.

Sport Enrichment and Academic Athletes Professional Pathway A huge sporting enrichment programme is available to all students. The department run trips to university sports departments as well as hosting visiting speakers. What ‘A’ Result

WInstanley students consistently achieve

high grades in these subjects. Topping the

table is our Further Maths course where in

2019, an incredible 96% of students got an

A*-B grade (national average is 73%).

PTI Mark If you’re joining the science or maths

department you are going to be accessing

award winning teaching!

We were recently awarded The Prince’s

Teaching Institute (PTI) Schools Programme

Mark for outstanding teaching in Maths and

Science. To achieve this prestigious award,

departments have to demonstrate that they

have increased the challenge within their

subject curriculum; developed their sta’s

own specialist subject knowledge;

developed subject-based links outside

school and enthused their pupils through

subject-based activities beyond the

curriculum.

STEMBy taking one of these subjects, you will have

access to our STEM (Science, Technology,

Engineering and Maths) programme. This

involves the chance to take part in

competitions, go on university visits and

listen to lectures from leading experts

currently working in the industry. We also

hold a STEM fair each year where employers

showcase their career opportunities

including higher apprenticeship vacancies

which students leaving college can apply for,

if this is their chosen progression route.

Medics, Dentists and Vets

Our MDV programme is another big part of

these departments. Each year we have an

extremely high success rate of helping

students get on to competitive degrees in

medicine, dentistry and veterinary science.

We will help you to nd work experience

placements, do practice interviews, coach

you on your UCAS application and organise

practical workshops and industry speakers

so that you can really hone your skills and

Amazing AlumniHere’s a couple of ideas of what studying maths or science could

lead to.

Alix Warburton

Alix, a former student of Byrchall High School, studied Biology,

Chemistry, Psychology and English Language and Literature at

Winstanley College between 2004 and 2006.

Fond memories of her time at Winstanley include the ‘fantastic

Science programme’ which set her of on the path to where she is now.

Alix took opportunities to attend master classesrelevant to

Biomedical Sciences through The National Academy for Gifted and

Talented Youth (NAGTY) and also found out about the Lattitude

Global Volunteering, formerly GAP Activity Projects, which

took her on a gap year to North East India teaching English,

Science and Humanities to primary and secondary school

children.

Following her Gap Year, Alix began her Higher Education

Alix says: ‘From an early point in my academic career I have

been highly driven by Biomedical Research. During the

second year of my undergraduate degree, I was awarded a

BBSRC Summer Studentship, in which I exploited

genome-wide RNA-interference screens in a Drosophila

genes involved in invasive cell metastasis.

This invaluable experience, in addition to my

undergraduate dissertation project on stem cell research,

reinforced my decision to pursue a PhD in Biomedical

Sciences.

After graduating from my PhD, I decided to travel abroad

What is Geology?

The Earth sits in a vast universe, occupied by hundreds of billions of stars in our galaxy alone. On the scale of galaxies and stars, the planets of our solar system may seem like insignicant particles of dust. But on these motes of dust, for over billions of years, great stories have played out. The study of geology allows us to glimpse these amazing events such as the opening and closing of entire oceans, the rise and fall of dinosaurs and

What will I study?

the origins of the universe itself. Moreover, geology also plays a central role in managing our resources, civil engineering and managing natural hazards. Geology is not an obvious subject choice for many but due to climate change and our ever-dwindling natural resources it has never been more important.

Everyone needs some level of specic mathematics knowledge. Most professions use maths to perform their job better and to get ahead in the world. In addition to this mathematics has a number of very useful benets to our mind; it develops our reasoning, helps us to have analytical thinking and generates practicality.

What is Mathematics?A-level Mathematics is a fantastic subject which combines ‘Pure Mathematics’ such as algebra, geometry and functions, with Applied Mathematics modules. It shows potential employers that you have a highly logical mind that can present organised arguments to solve numerical problems — a skill which is widely sought after.

Employers highly value an A-level in Maths and on average, students who have an A-level in Maths earn between 7% – 11% more than those who don’t have the qualication.

How will I be supported in my Mathematical studies?Individual support for students is provided by all sta and one-to-one support through our mentoring scheme is also available. Mathematics enrichment activities are thriving and numerous competitions take place both internally throughout the year and externally through challenges oered by the UK Maths Trust and Liverpool University.

Beyond A-levelWith an A-level in Mathematics you can do practically anything you wish! Maths A-level is a must have for degrees in: physics, engineering, actuarial science, economics and of course maths, although you may need to study A-level further maths as well to do this. Social sciencesAmazing AlumniHere’s what a couple of former students have gone on to do.

Laura Flanagan

Laura, a former pupil of Ladybridge High School, left Winstanley in 2016 after

completing A-levels in Maths, History and Health Studies. She is now working

for Elysium Healthcare at a secure hospital in Warrington.

Laura says: ‘I left Winstanley in 2016 and went on to Edge Hill University to

study Learning Disabilities Nursing.

During my time at uni I was a recipient of the Chancellor’s Scholarship for my

contribution to the university and my course. Part of my work involved visiting

Winstanley and delivering talks on applying for nursing at Edge Hill.

I graduated in December 2019 with a 2:1 and I’m now working for Elysium

Healthcare in a secure hospital in Warrington.’

Dominic Gane

Dominic, a former St Peter’s Catholic High School pupil, studied History, Law

and Government & Politics at A-level before going on to a Law with Politics

degree at the University of Manchester. He then completed an LPC with the

University of Law, and secured a training contract with Addleshaw Goddard, an

international business law rm with six oces in the UK and international

oces in Dubai, Qatar, Oman, Singapore, Hong Kong and Hamburg.

Dominic says: ‘The main thing Winstanley did for me was to give me the

opportunity to study topics that hadn't been available to me before.  These

were subjects I had an interest in but, at the time, knew very little about. Elaine

Mulroy (Politics) and Jacqui Vitali (Law) ran classes that were not only engaging

(and even entertaining!) but were so informative that in my third year at

university I was still looking back on the notes they had given me in my rst

year!   ‘I now work primarily with large institutional investors and FTSE 100 and FTSE

250 companies.  My work includes drafting and negotiating dierent property

documents in respect of estate management for institutional commercial

landlords, disposals and acquisitions of high value commercial property, and

multi-billion pound developments.  In recent months the Commercial Property

team was ranked Tier 1 in Manchester by The Legal 500 (the only rm to be

given a Tier 1 ranking in Manchester), and the national team was named Real

Estate Team of the Year at The Lawyer Awards 2019.’

Why should I study Criminology? This fascinating new course (1 A-level equivalent) will help you to develop a detailed understanding of crime; including the following big ideas:

• How to create change: We have a problem with knife crime in the UK, could you as a criminologist design a campaign to raise awareness for change to reduce this huge problem?

Why should I study Criminology?• What do we mean by crime and how can we explain it? Can theories help us to explain cases such as Fred West and Ted Bundy?

• How can we use oender proling to catch criminals?Does prison work? Should we increase the amount of surveillance on society?

Criminology at Winstanley The department is an enthusiastic, committed and creative bunch of people. We care about students’ experience as well as their achievement and pride ourselves on excellent resources, enrichment, results and progression to related courses.

What units will I study? All students will study four units:

Year 1:Unit 1 - Changing awareness of crimeThis unit focuses on where the public get their perception of crime from and how various campaigns have tried to change this. This unit is assessed through a controlled assessment (open book exam) in the winter of your rst year. You will be required to write a series of essays and produce a campaign surrounding a crime of your choice, eg a campaign to raise awareness for male victims of domestic violence. You have to produce materials such as merchandise and social media posts so there is a chance to get creative!

Unit 2 - Criminological theoriesThis unit is examined through a closed book exam in the May of your rst year. It focuses in the main on psychological and sociological theories of crime – why does crime happen? These theories are then evaluated to see whether they actually do a good job of explaining the crime which happens in our society. We will also use the theories of crime to explain why specic criminals have committed crime e.g. Fred and Rose West, Harold Shipman.

Year 2:Unit 3 - Crime scene to courtroomThis unit looks at all the roles and investigative techniques that take an investigation from the crime scene to the courtroom. You will study the role of external parties such as pathologists, and assess the usefulness of techniques such as DNA analysis and oender proling. You will also look at bodies such as the CPS and how they decide whether a case gets through to court. This unit is assessed via another controlled assessment in the autumn of your second year.

Unit 4 - Crime and punishmentThis is a synoptic unit which is examined in the June of your second year. It brings together all the other units, with a particular focus on whether the current punishment systems in place in our justice system are working.

Each of these units contributes 25% towards your nal grade.

Careers and universityStudents who achieve this qualication may use it as part of the requirement to progress to university. The course is particularly suitable for degrees, including: youth work, criminology, law, humanities, human rights, social policy, probation, social work, psychology or sociology.

Why should I study Law at Winstanley? The law is a set of rules which shapes politics, the economy and society; they are usually enforced through a number of institutions. In this context it is clear that studying A-level Law is not only for the wannabe lawyer! You should certainly be considering Law if you want to study an

Why should I study Law at Winstanley?exciting and challenging subject which is relevant to everyday life. This two-year course is divided into three modules. The rst year modules are the important foundations of any further legal studies providing a broad appreciation of the law and its functions in society.

Prospectus 2021

This knowledge is then built on in the second year with an in-depth look into Criminal Law, Contract and Tort. You will learn how criminal liability can be established and how someone can be ‘guilty’ of many criminal oences including murder, GBH, and robbery. A-level Law is an evolving subject. It therefore requires a willingness to ‘get involved’, for example, by watching legal documentaries and reading a quality newspaper. As the A-level is based on written examinations, it is essential that you have the ability to write essays and the intelligence to understand and use detailed material as well as the patience to learn it. However, it is very rare for any student to have studied Law before; therefore, we pride ourselves on our ‘user-friendly’ introduction to the subject which greatly assists a smooth transition from GCSE to A-level.

EnrichmentTo enhance your learning, there are many exciting activities connected to the law which you can be involved in. Visits to the local Crown and Magistrates Courts help students to learn about the court system, whilst there is the Mock Trial competition for any budding barristers. Guest speakers and student-led debates are also frequently arranged in college.

For those who are keen on a career in Europe, there is a trip to Paris and Brussels to visit European Institutions, as well as our very popular visit to Washington and New York. Closer to home, there is the chance to visit a local prison and the Houses of Parliament.

Subject combinations and careersA-level Law can be studied alongside most subjects, but it goes particularly well with Politics, English, History, Economics and Foreign Languages. Obviously a considerable number of students who choose A-level Law do so with the intention of entering into the legal profession. However, it can also lead to exciting careers in the Civil Service, Public Administration and Management, the Police, Banking, the Armed Forces and Social Work. Those who do wish to pursue the legal path will be well advised about the options of doing either a Law degree or another undergraduate degree followed by the CPE conversion course.

What will I study?

• The court and appeal systems, lay people and the legal profession

• The dierent types of law and how they are made including Acts of Parliament, delegated legislation and judicial precedent

• An in-depth look at homicide, non-fatal oences and oences against property and all the defences to these oences

• The rules of TORT, liability in negligence, occupiers’ liability and responsibility of employers and employees

• The law of CONTRACT how they are formed, how they are breached and compensation available if they are breached

• Investigating and analysing law and morals, law and justice and the extent to which judges create law

‘I found criminal law the most interesting. I also enjoy being able to apply law to a problem scenario’

‘I have particularly enjoyed completing the problem questions in law, because it’s interesting deciding what crime has been committed’

What will I study?

Year 1 Political ideas that shaped the world we live in: liberalism, socialism, conservatism and anarchism.

How our political system works: the Constitution, Parliament, the Prime Minister and the Supreme Court.

Debates over how our politics works: Conservative Party, Labour Party, electoral systems, referendums, voter behaviour and media inuence over elections.

Year 2How the US political system works: the U.S. Constitution, the Congress, Presidency and Supreme Court.

The key debates in U.S. politics: Democratic and Republican parties, U.S. elections and the inuence of special interests.

Linear assessment of the two years study via 3 A-level exams in the second year.

What about enrichment?Politics oers endless extra and super-curricular opportunities – with trips to Washington D.C. in the United States, the UK Parliament and Supreme Court, and to Model United Nations conferences. Politics students are usually the backbone of the Winstanley Debating Society and national debating events such as Debating Matters sponsored by the Institute for Ideas.

There are as many opportunities as students want to become involved in local politics and meet local MPs and councillors; and many students do work experience with them to enhance own chances of entering politics in the future. We enjoy a special relationship with the University of Manchester: preparing students for top degrees at all universities on its ‘pre-university’ course from the September of Upper Sixth.

Careers and university Politics students are among the highest achieving in the college in terms of grades As and A*s and nearly all progress to top universities (11% of Politics students were oered a place at either Oxford or Cambridge in 2020), or Her Majesty’s Civil Service.

At degree level, most students read subjects related to Politics, but medics and science and maths students nd it a refreshing contrast to their traditional subject choices. Others, including successful Oxbridge candidates, nd that is a subject that is highly valued by universities for the critical thinking and literacy skills that it promotes.

Psychologists have attempted to answer important questions such as: how does prejudice develop, why do people blindly follow malevolent authority, why do some people develop mental health problems and not others? Psychologists study a range of things that we may normally take for granted: such as how do we learn to be male or female, why do 3 month old babies seem happy in anyone’s company but only like familiar faces when they are 8 months old, when we are attracted to someone is this because we believe they are similar to us or do we like them because of what they can oer us?

Psychology at Winstanley CollegeThe psychology department is an enthusiastic, committed, creative and imaginative bunch of people. We care about students’ experience of psychology and about our students’ achievements. We pride ourselves on our excellent resources, results and the number of students that go on to study psychology at degree level.

What will I study? You will consider the nature of, and organisation of human memory systems, the development of attachments in human infants and an understanding of how psychologists conduct their research. You will study how the power of an authority gure and the presence of others aects our behaviour.

What do psychologists mean by psychological abnormality? You will learn specically about OCD, phobias and depression as well as how abnormality is explained dierently by dierent psychologists. You will develop an appreciation for how the psychological disorders are treated when the views about how they develop are so dierent.

EnrichmentWe also like to complement our teaching with appropriate enrichment opportunities.

We have had trips to the zoo to look at animal behaviours, and had prison and court visits. We invited the True Life Conference to college where students got to meet ex-oenders.

Recently, we have been to London to attend conferences and visit Bethlem the site of the one of the oldest mental institutions in the UK. In previous years we have been to Poland, Vienna, NYC, China and San Fransisco - maybe you can suggest a new destination!

What is Sociology?

Putting it simply, Sociology is the study of how society impacts or inuences human behaviour. Sociology investigates what values, attitudes and rules we learn within society, how we learn them and what eect these rules and attitudes have on our behaviour.

• Does everyone follow the rules?

• Is everyone in society equal or do some groups have more power than • others?

• Which groups suer the most/least inequality?

• Are social attitudes and rules changing?

• Is society sexist and racist?

Who should study Sociology?Sociology is a challenging subject. Sociology students are expected to want to think independently, and make their own judgements based on the sociological theory and evidence they have considered. To enjoy Sociology you need to enjoy reading, thinking about people and writing essays.

Sociology students are also concerned with gathering social research by using research methods such as questionnaires, interviews, and observations. Sociology students at Winstanley are very keen to undertake research in the areas of Education and Crime in particular.

Typical Education Research questions include; ‘how do teachers label pupils?, ‘are teachers sexist?’ Or ‘why do girls out perform boys?’. Typical crime research questions include; ‘are the police racist?’ and ‘why do males commit more crime than females?’.

Why should I study Sociology at Winstanley? At Winstanley, Sociology is taught by enthusiastic members of sta who are also examiners. However, Sociology isn’t just exam work. Sociology lessons include a diverse range of learning activities including PowerPoints, classroom discussions and debates as well as undertaking social research and analysing the results.

EnrichmentAs part of the Social Science department, Sociology has enjoyed trips to the Crown Court and to Hindley Young Oenders. Students have been to Lancaster University for a taster day and they also took part in the True Life Conference where students get to meet and talk to ex-oenders.

Sociology and careersThere is a wide variety of career options to choose from after studying Sociology. For instance because the subject itself allows you to investigate social institutions such as the education system, the health service the media and the criminal justice system, Sociology students often pursue careers connected to these institutions such as teacher, journalist, nurse, social worker, prison ocer or police ocer. Sociology can also be studied with any subject combination, but it helps if you are studying other subjects in Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences, including English, History, Philosophy, Politics, Law and Psychology, where similar skills are also developed.
