Winona State’s Leadership Education graduate program gains international prominence in presenting academic research to higher education representatives from over 22 countries in the 2018 Clute International Conference in Washington D.C. from April 8-11, 2018. The WSU contingent to the conference held in Washington, DC included two WSU alumni, two currently enrolled graduate students, one adjunct faculty member and a leadership education faculty member.

The Clute Institute publishes and promotes leading research in multiple disciplines from all over the world and has been doing so for over 30 years.

Graduate program alumni Chris Hahn and Carson Perry offered academic research and served as session chairs for the duration of the conference. Clute invited Hahn to present as a keynote speaker with his work, “The Evolving Role of Higher Education in Workforce Development” while Perry offered his research, “Crucial Components for Undergraduate Student Leadership Development Programs” to a leadership session in the conference.

Hahn states, “As a recent graduate of the WSU Leadership Education program, it was a tremendous honor to be invited as the keynote speaker! The Clute Institute conferences provide an excellent opportunity to present your research to colleagues from all over the world and meaningfully engage with the international community of learners. This conference also offered the unique opportunity for both Carson and me as Alumni to support the scholarship efforts of our current WSU graduate students at the international level.”

Current graduate students Austin Opfer and Jeff Thompson presented academic research titled, “Graduate Student Persistence in Academia, When Student Perspective Matters” in a session pertaining to student success.

“I couldn’t be happier with how we did. We had terrific follow up questions to facilitate a discussion and received great feedback from higher education professionals from all over the world! DC was incredible and it provided us invaluable professional experience,” states Opfer.

Leadership Education Professor Dr. Barbara Holmes oversaw the Winona group as the lead contributor and advisor for all the participants research and presentations. Additionally, Holmes holds a board member position with the Clute Institution.

“WSU is earning its rightful place on the world stage of global research as leadership education students embrace the commitment to generate new knowledge and ideas to improve learning and organizational leadership,” said Holmes.

The Clute Institute was founded in 1985 and has since published over 9,000 high quality academic journal manuscripts in their 19 academic journals and sponsor excellent academic conferences. In 2017, Forbes lead that 72 of the top 100 US colleges have been represented at Clute Conferences or in Clute Publications.

Planning for Graduation

Dr. Howman was asked to determine the need for education services by refugee youth in Thailand, and to identify available resources. A team of WSU students was enlisted to assist (Cindy Xiong, Katie Miller, Jake Hager, Aaron Murray). This project has evolved into a unique travel study opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students of all disciplines (e.g., leadership, health, education, language, culture). Collaborating with Dr. Howman are Dr. Michael Bowlin and Dr. Yogesh Gover (Global Studies & World Languages), Dr. Peter Sternberg (Health, Exercise & Rehabilitative Sciences), and Ms. Connie Kamara (Director, Health & Wellness Services). Contact Dr. Howman for more information ([email protected]).

Parliament building, nicknamed the “beehive”

This spring, Dr. Waterbury and 11 graduate students (eight Leadership Education and three Nursing) participated in a New Zealand Travel Study program. Dr. Julie Ponto (nursing) assisted in the trip preparations and co-taught one of the courses from Minnesota. During the fifteen-day trip, the students visited multiple organizations to learn about leadership. Some group highlight visits included Parliament, the Ministry of Health, Zealandia, and the University of Auckland – Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Students individually visited with organizations of their interest. These included schools and universities, hospitals, the Ministry of Education, non-profit organizations, and a Leadership Development Center.

Chelsea Dresen and I met with the founder of The Free Store, a nonprofit organization in Wellington that collects bread and bakery items to give to those who may be food insecure. Not only did we get to learn about the organization but we were able to participate in the collection. The Free Store allowed us to experience an innovative way to

It is difficult to summarize the experience in words, but some of the students shared quotes about the experience. Waitangi Treaty Grounds was my favorite experience because what we had learned about the Maori people became real. It was a beautiful and thoughtful way to end our trip. As a music educator, seeing and hearing the singing and the dancing was very powerful, and the memories of that will last my whole life. -Matthew Wilmes I learned a lot about my leadership style. It is easy to start to feel comfortable in your own life, work environment, and relationships. Going New Zealand allowed me to see who I am and how I handle situations when my comforts are taken away. I was uncomfortable around people I have never met before, and it was okay to be, we build strong relationships with total strangers. There are many times in our lives as leaders when we will be uncomfortable, and now I know that I can handle the feeling and thrive in it. -Lucy Johnson Sea kayaking in Pihia was a test of teamwork and leadership at the perfect point in our trip. It was wonderful to spend the last few days here reflecting on all that we had learned. -Liz Moldenhauer During the Able Tasman "tramping", I encountered a large group of school children

WSU students are preparing for a two-day hiking adventure in Able Taman National Park.

with their teachers passing in the opposite direction on a narrow path. I stood on the side of the path catching my breath and admiring a waterfall when I saw a boy put his hand over his heart and exclaimed: "this is why I love my country!" It seems that relationship theme was evident in this instance as well, where children develop a relationship with nature with the guidance of adults. -Marika Vukomanovich I stretched myself to what I thought were my physical limits on this hike. After the hike, I learned from the discussions and reflections that, as leaders, we all perceived and experienced the challenge in different ways. For some it was a more physical challenge, others a more mental challenge. I don't think we made these discoveries while on the hike, rather, it was upon reflection after. -Matthew Wilmes

Hiking Able Tasman will remain ingrained in my mind, body and spirit forever. This experience connected me with an indescribable beauty that was reflected in the lush landscape, free flowing conversation and sweet and solemn silence with a special group of people. The physical accomplishment challenged me to acknowledge an awareness of how to climb personal mountains with courage and celebrate the beauty of the present as it reveals itself to us each day. -Karen Sullivan For more information about the New Zealand Travel Study program, contact Dr. Theresa Waterbury ([email protected]).

The Department of Leadership Education is hosting its annual social event for graduate students on August 22 (5:15-8:15pm). Please join us aboard the Cal Fremling Interpretive Center & Floating Classroom, a state-of-the-art vessel docked in Winona. Everyone will treated to catered dinner, followed by a cruise along the Mississippi. This is a great opportunity to ask questions, and to become better acquainted with one another and our faculty and staff.

Per WSU policy: An In-Progress (IP) grade is permitted by the instructor for special cases when circumstances prevent the student from completing course requirements by the end of the semester, although the student is passing the course in all other respects. All IP grades must be removed within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which an incomplete is incurred or the course grade becomes an F. All IP grades for course work must be removed before a graduate degree is granted. NOTE: This includes the completion of thesis (LDRS 699) and field study (EL 799) research papers.
