Throughout the Design Festival everyone is welcome to come and build their own addition to this collaborative sculpture. Assemble one of the modules, and add it on to join others, contributing to the largest collaborative sculpture in Winnipeg!

We’ll provide a standard module which participants assemble. The assembled module is then placed, adding onto the sculpture. The in-stallation process will therefore be over a number of days during the festival. The growth of the sculp-ture will be documented and pre-sented as a physical measure of participants’ collective conscience during the design festival.

The sculpture will be built in the event space at MAKE / Coffee + Stuff on 751 Corydon. Stop by and contribute! Building will take place during the following hours:

of Architecture Students (UMAAS) and the Manitoba Asso-ciation of Architects (MAA) Interns in Architecture Committee.

The event is intended to bring the local design community into one space to discuss ideas, projects and design in a social setting. WDF walks!Various Locations – September 22

Meet local Landscape Architects from Hilderman Thomas Frank Cram as they guide tours through 2 of the city’s newest Landscape designs. Millennium Library – Guided by Monica Giesbrecht, Principal, HTFC – 10:00 am

Take a walk through the newly reopened Millennium Library Park with Landscape Architect Monica Giesbrecht. Get introduced to the Park’s modernist history and how this tradition is continued in the new renovation. Learn about the intense stakeholder building process that now makes this park a vibrantly programmed activ-ity centre in the Downtown. Look below the surface of the park and explore the innovative design thinking and sustainable technolo-gies behind Winnipeg’s largest intensive green roof. Discover the three significant pieces of public art in the park and learn about how they came into being. Get a glimpse of what is yet to come for this vibrant public space. Meet at the beaker water sculp-ture called ‘EmptyFul’ along the Donald Street edge of the park.

Steinkopf Gardens – guided by Glen Manning, Principal, HTFC – 11:30 am

This tour reveals the story be-hind the rehabilitation of this landmark urban courtyard in downtown Winnipeg. The intent of the renovation was to update and refresh the space, which was originally constructed in the late 1960’s, adding life and improv-ing accessibility. The design team worked hard to respect and retain design elements from the origi-nal courtyard, while addressing new demands on the design, and advancing some of the original courtyard’s unrealized urban design aspirations. The tour will touch on the many challenges that were overcome, from uncharted utility lines to overzealous skate-boarders – and a few that we are still working on. Meet at the entry plaza on Lily Avenue between the Concert Hall and Manitoba Museum.

Winnipeg is at a turning point in its redevelopment. Major projects are being planned or constructed throughout the city, many under our last decade’s administrator’s guidelines for a much slower emerging metropolis.

In the past, the design commu-nity has responded en masse to re-imagine the city, whether the focus was our waterfront in the ex-change, or our mythic crossroads, Portage and Main.

The second event of the FRONT-lines series is going to feature three projects from the past that re-imagine the city on a civic scale. After introductory short presentations, designers and architects will discuss the issues pertinent to the projects in a mod-erated forum. Following the first event, StoreFRONT MB and Front-Lines will call upon our community once again to bring our vision and creativity to all Winnipeggers to help them imagine a more vibrant, livable and beautiful city. livable and beautiful city.

Maquette100 King StSeptember 28 8:30 pm Opening NightSeptember 29 6:00 pm – 6:00 am Nuit BlancheCurated by Thom Fougere

Three dimensional modeling is a tool employed by designers, architects, makers, and manufac-turers to gain an understanding of the spatial implications of an idea. Three dimensional modeling – whether 1:1 or 100:1 – is arguably

the most revealing stage in the design process. Its physicality allows for a hands-on interaction with the manifestation of the idea. Something that was previously ideated along a single index, usu-ally through sketches or drawings, can now be viewed from multiple perspectives. This can facilitate a deeper understanding of not only the physical connections within the object, but also the larger con-textual spatial and emotional con-nections that the object will have with the surrounding environment. The upcoming exhibit, Maquette, will showcase a selection of these three dimensional explorations from established Winnipeg-based designers, architects and artists. Maquette will present how some of Winnipeg’s foremost creators use three dimensional modeling in their creative process. Whether in the form of initial conceptual iterations or the result of countless hours of labourious refinement, each of the objects on display will offer an insight into the creative process.

This year, Lisa Rochon (Globe and Mail Architecture Critic, and cura-tor of online think tank CityLab) is keynote speaker, speaking about the shape of architecture in the future. The SUPER Lecture is a means of exploring architecture, urban development, as well as-

cross-pollination and building of relationships in the architecture and design community. Lisa Rochon is the award-winning architecture critic for The Globe and Mail. Since 2000, she has championed and critiqued archi-tecture and urban design from her base in Toronto and from around the world. She is the two-time winner of the National Newspaper Awards for her Globe column and has received the President’s Award for Journalism by the Royal Archi-tectural Institute of Canada. Lisa is the author of UP NORTH: Where Canada’s Architecture Meets the Land and is a contribut-ing editor to Modern North (Princeton, 2010) as well as
