The most basic problem is trapping all six numbers regularly.Until you do that - it doesn't matter what System you play.

4. BE IN IT FOR THE LONG TERM

A System entry, or a LottoMasta Modified-Guarantee System entry, isNOT a magic bullet. Many Syndicates play large System entries,especially for large Jackpots. If it was easy, they would win every week.They don’t.

These 4 combinations cost only $4, as opposed to $28 for a full System 8.With weekly savings of $24, this saves $1,248 over a year.

At $4 per entry, you could play 7 separate entries for $28 - covering56 numbers in all - all the numbers in most Lotteries, including somenumbers twice!

Note that the chances of all six winning numbers comingtogether is 1-in-3; but the reduction in cost is 1-in-7.

This approach gives you a System-type entry, at a reasonable cost. Byplaying far more numbers, e.g. 56 numbers for only $28, you gain twosignificant benefits:

Also, note from the Table on the preceding page that all combinations ofseven numbers are covered in just the first 7 Games. Adding an eighthnumber requires a further 21 Games. A full System 9 requires 84 Games, at a cost of $84 for a $1-a-gameLottery. The LottoMasta Modified-Guarantee System 9 requires just 8games, costing $8. The savings ?

It all sounds a little unreal. There’s only one way to prove it. Pick any sixnumbers between 1 and 8. The four games above are the essential ones to preserve a minimum5-if-6 guarantee. However, if you wish to play 6, 8, 12 or any othernumber of Games then you can choose your preferences from the full 28combinations.

Now let's deal with "Search & Replace" Conversion. This is the easierway, especially with larger systems, provided you follow the rulescarefully. We will use a LottoMasta 5 from 5 System this time.

To illustrate the basic principle, we will show you how we played theAustralian Lottery. 120 Numbers is very convenient for a 45-ball Lottery -it divides into 8 different sets of 15 numbers. Our LottoMasta Syndicatedivided the 45 Lotto numbers into the best 15, the worst 15, and themiddle 15, in terms of the frequency with which numbers come out. Wethen played each set a different number of times. You can also play 30numbers 4 times each, or you can have a totally “free” structure. Theexamples below illustrate how to use 120 numbers

All the preceding examples guarantee all 8 winning numbers (AustralianLotto has 6 main numbers plus two bonus numbers) in your overall entry.You can use any combination that adds up to 120 numbers. Note thatexample two guarantees at least 16 Winning Numbers (12 in a Lotterywith no bonus numbers) because all numbers are played at least twice.With 30 numbers played three times, you could have up to 24 WinningNumbers (18 in a Lottery with no bonus numbers). This would give youan average of 2.4 (or 1.8) Winning Numbers. If 2 of the 10 sets had noWinning Numbers, then you divide 24 (or 18) by 8 sets, and things beginto look promising.

IMPROVING THE ODDS(All Lotteries Worldwide)

There are OVER 8 MILLION combinations of six numbers in any 45numbers. This probably explains why you are having trouble winningLotto!

Play a 44-ball Lottery (just one less) - and the odds drop by over a million.For the perfectionists amongst you - from 8,145,060 (45 balls) to7,059,052 (44 balls).

By the time you get down to 32 numbers, you have ONE -IN-A-MILLION-CHANCE, with 906,192 combinations of six numbers.

After that the odds start to fall dramatically. With only four numbers less- 28 numbers - your chances are 1-in-376,740.

By the time you get down to 22 numbers there are less than 100,000combinations of six numbers - 74,613 to be exact. Let’s ponder these facts for awhile -

Halving the numbers played (From 45 to 22) causes a reduction(in combinations of six numbers) from 8,145,060 to 74,613

The first question is, "How Many Numbers Do You Need to Choose toRegularly Trap ALL Six Winning Numbers?"

If you don't know, it's time you found out.

The most basic problem is trapping all six numbers regularly.Until you can do that - it doesn't matter what System you play.

Start by choosing two-thirds of the total numbers in your Lottery. Forexample, if you play UK's 49-ball Lottery, choose 32 numbers. Monitorthe results for 10 weeks. What do you get? All six Winning Numbersevery week? Five most weeks? Four most weeks?

For a 45-ball Lottery, choose 30 numbers and monitor those, and so on.Once you have some results from your ten week trial - experiment.Choose 75%, 80% or even 90% and see what results you get from that.Keep experimenting until you get results you are happy with.

The results will probably surprise you. Even with several sophisticatedLottery programs, I could not trap all six Winning Numbers every week,for a 45-ball Lottery, in 30 numbers. At 32 numbers chosen, the resultswere not too bad; at 36 numbers chosen I was getting good results.

While dropping the numbers from 45 to 36may seem uninspiring, consider this:

In this chapter we will look at what you would find if you wrote out everysingle combination in 45-ball Lottery, a 49-ball Lottery and 51-ballLottery - and how that can help you.

There are 8,145,060 6-number combinations in a 45-ball Lottery. If youwrote them all out, the Odds and Evens would look like this:

There are winning weeks with all lownumbers or all high numbers - but do you want to play in the 3% zone orthe 97% zone? In the 19% zone or the 81% zone? The great thing abouthaving this level of knowledge is you can start to make informedchoices, instead of leaving absolutely everything to Lady Luck.

Note that almost 50% of combinations have no consecutive numbers. Addcombinations that only have two consecutives and you cover 87.5% of allcombinations. Looked at in terms of what you might expect in practice -8-9 weeks out of ten you can expect the winning numbers to either have noconsecutive numbers or only two (ignoring bonus numbers). Again, I amnot saying you can't have three consecutive numbers in the winningnumbers - but that is the 5% zone.

Remember, there is only 1 of the 8,145,060 combinations that can be acomplete repeat of last week's draw. However, between 0 and 2 repeatsaccount for 97.6% of all possible combinations. Play in the 97% zone!

You can significantly improve your chances by understanding thesestatistics. It's like the golfer or tennis player who plays the percentageshots - in Lotto there are high percentage plays and low percentage plays.

Before you studied this chapter, you might have chosen the followingtwelve numbers to play in your lottery:

1 3 6 9 12 15 19 21 24 25 31 35.

Would you choose them now? (I hope not!) Examine them and makepencil notes below of why they are a poor choice (assume a 45-ballLottery). Now turn over to see why you shouldn't play numbers like this.

Why you should not play them:

Of the 12 numbers, 9 are odd. You cannot possibly win if the resultincludes 4, 5 or 6 even numbers. You rule out a massive percentage ofpossible winners. Having 6 odd / 6 even maximises your chances.

Of the 12 numbers, 8 are in the lower half of the 45 numbers and only 4are in the top half. Again, it is an unbalanced entry. This is easy to do;most people mark from 1 onwards - and run out of numbers as they get tothe high end. In a 45-ball Lottery entry, I would choose 4 numbers eachfrom 1-15, 16-30 or 31 to 45.

If more than two of the numbers had been out the previous week, it wouldalso fail the "reasonableness test" for prior week's results.

The numbers pass the "Consecutive numbers" test.

For a 51-ball Lottery, the entry overleaf would be a disaster - 11 of the12 numbers are in the bottom two-thirds of the 51 numbers. What is evenworse - the "birthday numbers" theory comes into play. Prizesgenerally are lower if all the winning numbers are under 31, for tworeasons. First, people playing birthdays (1-31 for the days and 1-12 for themonths) and secondly the tendency to start marking at 1 and run out ofnumbers at the high end. Weeks with no winner often tend to have highernumbers. More often than not, a win with 18-21-32-35-42-49 will pay farmore than a win with 1-8-11-16-25-30, although both have the samechance of coming out.

This raises an interesting angle on the "Lotteries are totally random"argument; that it is people that play Lotteries and human behaviour hassome predictability. In the Florida Lottery in 1990, over 52,000 peopleplayed 1-2-3-4-5-6 in a single week! Imagine sharing your prize with52,000 other people - it would hardly be worth the trip to bank it. Otherpopular choices are all the 5's or all the 7's, eg, 5-10-15-25-35-40. If youwin the Lottery, you want as few winners as possible sharing the prize;ideally, just you.

Whether you decide to play LottoMasta Modified-Guarantee Systems orwhether you want to play a full system, look to be in the "Play-Smart"zone. As with life generally, balance is the key.

As you may have observed, the "Play-Smart" zones don't change muchwhatever the Lottery; the percentages are very close.

The argument is frequently raised that, for Lotteries, there is noway you can forecast anything – because anything is possible.

My argument is that, while anything certainly is possible,some things are more probable than others.

For example, no game has ever drawn six consecutive numbers It isperfectly possible that six consecutive numbers will be drawn next week.BUT - do you want to put your money on that probability?

Or do you want to bet six consecutive numbers will not be drawn.

The argument is also advanced that the Law of Averages means allnumbers drawn will even out over time. This is true, but the “over time”bit is interesting. A weekly draw means 52 draws a year. Divide the13,983,816 combinations in a 49-ball game by 52 weeks – and you can seeit takes over 250,000 years to draw all possible combinations!

My argument is that an entry that is “balanced” in terms of short-term trends, playing as many numbers as possible in a highlyorganised, mathematically-precise, manner, is the most logical way toplay.

Also note the implications of 3-odd/3-evens equalling approximately one-third of all combinations. It means that such a result can be expected, onaverage, every third week. It is worth setting up a manual database, if you donot have a computer, that at least identifies odds and evens and highs and lows.An example is shown at the end of this chapter.

If you notice that either odds and evens or highs and lows have gone five ormore weeks without a 3+3, it might worth concentrating on 3+3 until it doeshit.

LONG-TERM AND SHORT-TERM CONSIDERATIONS

By now you may have recognised that :

Some trends are Short-Term, eg, How many weeks between Drawsthat have, for example, no consecutive numbers and

Some trends are more Long-Term, ie, the frequency of individualnumbers. These are very difficult to predict.

It is a little like playing a roulette wheel. Backing Odd or Even gets youvery low odds because both come out so often. Back individual numbersand you get the longest odds, because they come out far less frequently(compared to Odd or Even).

In Lotto, players tend to follow numbers. I personally use the followingrules for selecting numbers: Split the total numbers into two groups. Thefirst are those that have been out at least twice in the last 10-12 weeks;these account for 4 of each 6 numbers. The second, larger, group accountfor the remaining 2 numbers in any six. I normally play all the numbersbut with a weighting towards those I consider "hot" at present.

BUT - the main consideration is short-term trends; odds/evens,highs/lows, consecutive numbers, etc.

Very few people follow Short-Term trends.Perhaps you should become one of them.

Our NSW Lotto Syndicate used the 596-game system above for 22numbers to win every single week for 63 consecutive weeks – althoughusually only minor divisions. Here is how we did it.

We split the 44 numbers in NSW Lotto into 2 groups of 22. Thisguaranteed we had ALL EIGHT Winning Numbers (six main plus twobonus numbers). Splitting them over two groups of 22 guaranteed ATLEAST four Winning Numbers in one of the groups of 22 (Splits must be4/4, 5/3, 6/2, 7/1 or 8/0). Provided we organised our 22 Numbers toguarantee a payout from four Winning Numbers, WE HAD TO WINSOMETHING EVERY SINGLE WEEK. If we had 5 or more winningnumbers, only 4 were absolutely guaranteed together – after 4, you areentirely in the hands of Lady Luck. There are also a couple of ways to expand this basic system. We could,for example, pick two sets of 9 numbers from each set of 22 numbers andplay them as Full System 9’s. So, we would have 22 numbers with all4-number combinations covered plus two sets of 9 with all 6-numbercombinations covered. This is one of the great advantages of ModifiedGuarantee Systems – you can cover large groups of numbers with a looseguarantee but choose some of those numbers for a tighter guarantee. Byoverlaying two full System 9’s on each set of 22, we also have areasonable measure of full cover. Alternatively, you could play 3 x fullSystem 8’s, with some numbers played twice.

You can also overlay the basic 2 x 22 Numbers system with a System forall 44 numbers. This 44-number system guarantees at least three winningnumbers every week – no matter what numbers are drawn! While thisdoesn’t guarantee a pay-out, it gives a reasonable chance – especially withthe Turbo Version.

The 44-number system guaranteeing at least three winning numberstogether is much cheaper to play – only 157 games. The Turbo version is314 games.

If I wanted to spend $38,000 on Lotto (at $1 per game), the choice wouldbe between:

Assuming for a moment you play all the numbers in a 45-ball Lotteryevenly, (the principle applies to ANY Lottery) then -

13 x System 14’s guarantees 32 Winning Numbers overallin an Australian Lottery or 24 Winning Numbers in a 45-ball Lottery where no bonus/supplementary numbers aredrawn;

Syndicates who play System 20’s sometimes don’t even get 3 numberscorrect. Imagine writing out 42 different sets of 12 numbers trying NOTto get 3 numbers correct in a single one; it would be almost impossible ifyou were covering all 45 numbers evenly. The law of averages would foronce be working in your favour - very unusual for Lotto.

Of course, the argument used by advocates of System 20’s (or 18’s) is thatIF you get the right numbers in a System 20 you get massive multiplelower Divisions.

This misses a few very important points. Not least amongst them is IF.The first - and major - problem is getting enough winning numbers toget some kind of return. Let’s worry about how they line up AFTER wehave solved that most basic of problems.

Next, the number one objective is getting First Prize. Multiple minorDivisions are a secondary consideration. No matter how good thenumbers, there is only one first dividend in any System 20.

However, the real flaw in the argument is that we are NOT comparingthe results of a System 20 with the results of a System 12 or 14. Weare comparing the possible results from ONE System 20 againstTHIRTEEN System 14’s or FORTY TWO System 12’s. The 13 x System14 covers 45 numbers four times; the 42 x System 12 covers 45 numberseleven times. I suggest either of these has more chance of payingsubstantial minor Divisions than one System 20.

Now for the dreamers punch line - with 13 x System 14’s or 42 xSystem 12’s:

IT IS POSSIBLE TO HAVE MULTIPLE FIRST DIVISIONS !

We should be so lucky!

But let’s suppose you still want to go ahead. Let’s look at theeconomics from another angle. Have a good look at the 20 numbersbelow and decide whether or not you would be happy with them,before reading any further.

A pretty good set of numbers? I think so. But not for a System 20.Remembering that a System 20 gives you every single combinationof six numbers, let’s analyse what we have, against the followingbackground.

For the first 100 games of Australia's 45-ball Oz Lotto -

48 Games contained a winning last number in the 40’s;46 Games contained a winning last number in the 30’s;3 Games had 29 or lower as the highest winning number.

That's 97% of all Games requiring at least one number above 28.

The results for the Saturday 45-ball Lotto Draws between 1300 and1500 reveal:

63 Games contained a winning last number in the 40’s;31 Games contained a winning last number in the 30’s;3 Games had 27 or 28 as the highest winning number.

Here, 97% of all Games required at least one number above 26.

And the point behind these statistics? Quite simply, the money youwaste.

If you check our 20 numbers again, the first 13 are below 24. Ineffect, you have a full System 13 where all the numbers are below

24. That means you are paying for every combination of 2, 3, 5,7, 8, 9, 12, 15, 17, 18, 19, 22, and 23. 1,716 Games to beexact.But it gets worse, on two counts. First, if all the winning numberswere below 23, the payout would probably be low (see the "birthdaynumbers theory" on page 80).

Second, each combination of 6 gives birth to 6 combinations of five.That’s an astonishing 12,012 Games where either 5 or 6 of thenumbers are below 24. As you can see from the Game Analysisabove, the Games with all 6 numbers below 24 have 3 chances in a100 of winning. Not exactly playing the percentages, is it ?

Play in the 97% Zone - not the 3% Zone.

Let’s look at a different option - two System 15’s, with the 10favourite numbers in both.

The cost of the 2 x System 15’s is $10,010, as opposed to $38,760for 1 x System 20 (at $1 per game). I agree you lose something -what if, for example, 2, 3, 5, and 8 come out together?

Possible, but highly unlikely. There are occasionally draws that have4 numbers within one set of ten - but that’s the 3% Zone. The better“balance” of 2 x System 15’s gives you far greater value for money.

Most of the preceding comments apply to some extent to LottoMastaModified-Guarantee Systems. Except that you can cut the costs byup to 95%. This means less games, so less wasted games.

What are Modified-Guarantee Systems ?and How to Create Your Own!

Over the page you will find all of the 495 4-number combinations possiblefrom 12 numbers.

If you wanted to create your own Lottery system for 12 numbers that coveredevery possible combination of 4 numbers, here is how you would go about it.

First, start with a list of all 495 possible 4-number combinations. Next writedown your first 6-number combination – in our example overleaf, 1 2 3 4 56.

Now mark off every 4-number combination you can find in 1 2 3 4 5 6. Ihave put a line through these for you. Most people are surprised to find thereare 15 different 4-number combinations.

Next, choose your second set of 6 numbers. Here is where the “art” comesin. If you choose 1 2 3 4 5 7, you will mark off different 4-numbercombinations than if you choose 7 8 9 10 11 12. As you progress through the495 4-number combinations, it becomes increasingly difficult to mark off 10or 12 4-number combinations. Towards the end, you might only mark off 2 or3 4-number combinations for each 6-number set.

To this extent, it is not an exact science. If you would like to try creating yourown system, photocopy the 495 games several times and mark off all 495combinations. As a beginner, you will probably find you can reduce thenumber of games slightly each time you mark off the 495 games, as youbecome more adept at spotting patterns. If, like me, you find it fascinating –and frustrating - it becomes a personal challenge even to drop one 6-numbergame.

All Modified-Guarantee systems are built around this philosophy. Youcould create a system covering all 2-number combinations or one coveringall 5-number combinations – and just about anything in-between.

CREATING YOUR OWN LOTTERY CLUB

Practical Aspects, Winnings, Unpaid Shares & Costs Involved

The two big ways to improve your chances of winning are playing SystemEntries and playing in a Lottery Club (Syndicate in some countries). Forme, the two go together, in most cases. The cost of the larger full Systemsmeans you have to play in a Lottery Club. Even the larger Modified(Modified Guarantee) Systems offered by LottoMasta are really LotteryClub entries. A Lottery Club can be anything from two people upwards. Ipersonally prefer between six and ten members, with 20-30 for a Jackpot orSuperDraw.

Trouble is, most Lottery Clubs fall apart fairly quickly. This chapterhighlights why and what you need to do to run one properly.

Essentials:

Written Record of Members, their payments into the Lottery Club, andthe payment of Winnings to them.

Written Rules, preferably signed by Lottery Club Members.

Preferred:

A Bank Account specifically for the Lottery Club.

Photocopies of Coupons for all Members

Written Record of Members

Absolutely essential. By recording payments you know who has paid, whohasn’t, and what winnings have been paid to whom.

One of the most contentious issues is unpaid Shares. I personally believeyour Rules should state, quite clearly, that if you are not fully paid up –you are not in the Lottery Club for that week. Great friendships suffer onthe altar of money. If someone misses for 4 weeks and your Lottery Clubwins – they expect their Share (take what I owe out of my winnings!) Ifsomeone misses for 4 weeks and your Lottery Club does not win – thearrears get too big to pay and they drop out. Guess who usually ends up

making good the shortage? The organiser, not surprisingly, tires of thisafter getting caught a couple of times – and the Lottery Club folds.

Have written Rules, signed by Members, acknowledging they accept that ifthey are not fully paid up, they are not in it for that week!

So what do you do with unpaid Shares? The Rules should spell it outquite clearly. My preference is pooling. Members collectively share thecost and share the winnings. You will see I suggest having a BankAccount. Members should pay slightly more than they need, establishinga Reserve Fund. If there is a Share unpaid, it should be paid from thisReserve Fund (rather than the Lottery Club Organiser dipping into his ownpocket) and Members should then share any winnings equally.

If the Organiser – or any other Member - agrees to pick up unpaid Shares,they are entitled to the Winnings. If you prefer this, the Rules should sayso.

The other reason for the Bank Account is the costs involved. Usually oneperson gets all the work. And all the costs. Not good enough. If some-one does all the work, they are entitled to be reimbursed for any costsinvolved. This may include any or all of the following:

Photocopies for members, stationery, postage, phone calls, faxes.

For a large Lottery Club (say 20 people) the Members may agree that theone doing all the work gets a Free Share in return for their time. This isparticularly useful if you also agree each Member will take a share inrunning the Lottery Club – say one month each. This gives all Members achance for a free month in return for their time – and brings home toeveryone the time and hassle involved!

What about paying out winnings? I believe anything below $20 perMember should go into the Bank Account for Jackpots and SuperDraws.Whether you are playing for a $100 Million Jackpot or $1 Million, theodds are the same - and so is the cost of playing. Technically, the smartestway to play Lotto is to save up every week and play only SuperDraws andlarge Jackpots - but of course most of us Lotto enthusiasts need the"weekly fix!" Marrying these two needs, why not put all weekly winningsunder $20 per Member into a special SuperDraw Bank Account?Winnings over $20 per Member per week are paid out. With larger winspaid out immediately and smaller wins accumulated for big draws, you getthe best of both worlds.

You will also need to decide whether you keep the same numbers orchange them occasionally.Finally, to prove he/she actually put the coupons on, the Organiser shouldprovide photocopies to all Members. If you are a small Lottery Club –especially family or working in the same place – simply showing themthe coupons is obviously fine.
