A few years ago, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, automation,

blockchain and machine learning, were seen as future game changers, but remained

confined within academic discussion. Today, technology disruption is not only one of

the most popular topics in business publications, but also an indispensable agenda for

CFOs in considering their companies’ future strategies.

What is disruptive technology? Most commonly, it is regarded as newly developed

technology that creates much more value than existing technology and has the

potential to drastically change how we work, live, do business and increase economic

output. In this context, the priority for CFOs is not just to measure the impact of

technology disruption, but also to stay ahead of that disruption and maneuver

proprietary technology to benefit their businesses, especially in the context of building

sustainable business models.

This year, the theme of Asia Pacific CFO Vision Conference in China is "Winning in a

disruptive world”. This has a dual meaning. On a technology level, “disruptive world”

means new challenges and opportunities brought about by digital advancement.

From a macro perspective, it means disruption to the global economic order due to

the rise of protectionism and heightened geopolitical tensions. At this conference,

you can expect to gain insights from fellow CFOs, economists, transformation experts

and even an Olympic gold medalist on what it takes for CFOs to help their companies

navigate unprecedented disruption.

The conference also features breakout sessions for CFOs to explore a wide range of

topics, from digital finance technologies and M&A to cybersecurity and sustainability.

The purpose is to facilitate discussion among a cohort of CFOs on the most relevant

topics for their businesses, providing them with insights that can drive the

transformation of their companies and navigate a world of change.

Welcome to Asia Pacific CFO Vision 2019 in China!

Will political tensions derail economic gains in Asia Pacific?

The economies of Asia Pacific have demonstrated a good degree of resilience in the face of growing challenges in the global environment—from a slowing Chinese economy to trade tensions and declining commodity prices. The region’s well calibrated policy responses have been a key reason for this. But, could political stresses undermine this resistance? Several key elections and other political headwinds will emerge across Asia in the coming months—Asia’s continued resilience will hinge on how these political trends turn out.

Accelerating the evolution of CFOs

The landscape within which CFOs operate is changing dramatically. Accepting the need to adapt is the easy part of the challenge, however. Executing on this awareness requires CFOs to take on challenging tasks such as aligning their functions with their companies’ overall strategies and goals, identifying and acquiring the talent that will enable them to fulfill their ambitions, and accessing the support they need for their functions to go beyond implementing new technology. In this session, we explore how to accelerate the evolution of CFOs to serve as strategic partners for business by fully exploiting new tools and methods.

Sandy Cockrell, Global Leader and US National Managing Partner, CFO Program, Deloitte LLP

Disruptions pose constant threats and opportunities for CFOs these day. Business model evolution, shareholder activism, geopolitical surprises, technological changes─the list goes on. As a CFO, you face a host of challenges. You know the core question isn’t, “Will I face disruption?”, but “Am I prepared to embrace disruption when it comes?” In this session, three CFOs will explore the various forces that are changing finance and discuss potential strategies to harness disruption for competitive advantage.

Investing in turbulent times: Observations on the US and China

Over the past two years, the troubled US-China relationship has dominated market and business concerns—and with good reason. Going forward, even with an epic trade deal as proclaimed by President Trump, bilateral relations may well remain difficult. What does this mean for investing in China, whose economy is undergoing profound transformations? There is no better person than Dr. Weijian Shan to address many of these complicated issues. Dr. Shan has seen the worst of life, enduring hard labor during the Cultural Revolution before becoming a Wharton professor after China opened up. He is widely regarded as one of best-known financiers in Asia. This conversation with Dr. Shan will be moderated by Sitao Xu, chief economist of Deloitte China.

The Trust Economy

CFOs today play a crucial role in how value is created. Intuitively, many would naturally believe that trust matters in business. But how can the role of trust become more tangible and CEOs successfully guide us through the global business transformations in our midst? We are living in an age of trust erosion—one trust breach follows another. How can we stand out and make trust our advantage? How can trust-building become a catalyst for CFOs to return more value to all our stakeholders, help their organisations transform effectively and embrace technology to create the future? Philipp’s keynote paints a different picture from the typical digitization narratives, showing how trust is at the heart of the digital economy. It guides senior executives towards making the most of technology to reimagine their functions, discover new sources of value and create powerful differentiation in the marketplace.

Philipp Kristian Diekhoner, Author, Fortune 500 Innovation and Digital Strategy Leader

With growing pressure to innovate while new companies and technologies disrupt their core businesses, many companies are looking outside their organizations for new approaches. Disruptive M&A is one of the approaches being increasing used. This can include: New Product Acquisitions; New Capability Acquisitions; Disruptor Acquisitions; Adjacent Market Disruption; Seeking Convergence across Sectors and/or Becoming the Disruptor.

During this session, we will explore the different strategies and use a mix of Chinese and International case studies to discuss their respective advantages and disadvantages. Session D: Sustainability and Climate Change

Sustainability, once the domain of the sustainability team alone, is now a major concern for investors and hence for the C-suite and senior executives. As environmental, social and governance (ESG) information is increasingly demanded by stock exchanges, investors, rating agencies and other stakeholders, what role does the finance team have in ensuring such data is accurate and timely? This session will look at how ESG data is used and the growth of the ESG investing trend. Climate change risk will be explored in more detail, specifically how the Task Force for Climate-related Finance Disclosure (TCFD) is leading companies to consider and report on the financial impact of climate change within their income statements, balance sheets and reporting as a whole.

Benchmark rate reform – Transitioning away without LIBOR and IBORs

LIBOR underpins contracts affecting banks, asset managers, insurers and corporates worth an estimated USD350 trillion globally across all major currencies. Yet, despite being one of the most significant reference rates used by financial market participants, the last financial crisis revealed its inadequacies. Regulators in the UK and US have announced a transition away from LIBOR and other Interbank Offered Rates (IBORs) towards alternative reference rates (ARRs). Responsibility for proactive engagement has been placed on market participants. This fundamental overhaul of the global financial system promises to bring considerable costs and risks to all users of the financial markets. In this panel discussion, a distinguished panel of leaders from banks and corporates together with Jack Cheung, who is driving the development of HK's alternative benchmark, will discuss the challenges and implications of the changes to come.
