PARK FACTS FOR PARKSTOCK This park’s abundance of open space is one of its greatest assets. The 270 – acre site is locat-ed in the far northern section of the City of Osh-kosh, approximately one mile southeast of the intersection of Interstate 41 and State Hwy. 76. Facilities include 5 shelters, 3 sets of play-ground equipment, ball diamonds, a 17-field soccer complex with dedicated shelter, an ar-chery range, 3 tennis/pickleball courts, 3.8 miles of groomed cross-country ski trails, nu-merous picnic shelters, and two fishing lakes . Winnebago County Community Park also pro-vides an off-leash dog park, 2.25miles of paved shared use path, 36 holes of disc golf, ping pong, horse shoes, basketball, volley ball, beanbag toss, and prairie plantings. Numerous special events, tournaments and picnics are held in the park each year. The Community Park was built as a multi-phase development project during the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. A slow process of park improve-ments continued until the mid 1980’s. It was not until the mid 1990’s, with the annexation of the land into the City of Oshkosh, the establish-ment of the Sunnyview Exposition Center near-by, and the influx of urban development to adja-cent lands to the west and south, that the true value of the property began to be realized. The assets of the park became even more apparent as the County committed to updating the Park Master Plan. The ensuing project focused on numerous site analysis issues as well as input from an extensive needs assessment study. Eventually, it became apparent that the urban growth, storm water/drainage, and road circula-tion concerns stood out as major challenges that would need to be addressed. Likewise, the user groups’ athletic field space needs (i.e. soc-

cer fields) had significant impact on the plan-ning process. Segmenting the redevelopment of the property into a multi-year-multi-phase approach, the County completed Phase I of the Community Park Master Plan in the fall of 1998. The first phase concentrated on improvements being made in the south section of the park at a cost of $1,300,000.00. Elements of the project in-cluded: Alleviating drainage problems and providing a centralized storm water detention site while adding the first section of city water main to the park infrastructure. Rebuilding a large portion of park roadbed and changing the circulation from a one-way to a two-way traffic flow. Building seven new soccer fields while adding 360 parking stalls, and providing pedes-trian linkages. The Parks Department then began implementa-tion of Phase II of the Master Plan. This portion of the plan involved the installation of in-ground irrigation on each of the new soccer fields, us-ing water pumped from the adjacent pond. In 2014 a new Shared Use Path and roadway project was installed along with more tree plant-ings, round abouts, new signage and a Monarch/song bird/pollinator garden. The Natu-ral Way began to take shape on the western edge of the park which will include fitness equipment and the first set of Harmony Chimes. Fundraising is underway to add more elements to this area to provide amenities for the universally accessible area to learn and play.

There will be a quiz on this later...

This Is Why You Get To Celebrate Your Birthday Every Year

    By Todd Van Luling

Have you ever thought about why we even bother to celebrate birthdays? When you think about it, they’re really just an opportuni-ty for your friends and family to come togeth-er and congratulate you for surviving another year. But for some reason it’s become far more than that.

Although research on the exact origin of birthdays and birthday cakes remains incon-clusive, there is enough of a consensus to piece together an approximate history. Per-haps someday a Birthdayologist will come along to set the record completely straight, but until then, we’ve compiled this short list of historians’ best hypotheses on the evolution of birthday celebrations and the delicious cakes that so often accompany them.

    1. Egyptians started the party.

When pharaohs were crowned in ancient Egypt they were considered to have trans-formed into gods. This divine promotion made their coronation date much more im-portant than their birth into the world. Schol-ars have pointed to the Bible’s reference of a Pharaoh’s birthday as the earliest known mention of a birthday celebration (around 3,000 B.C.E.), but Egyptologist Dr. James Hoffmeier believes this is referencing the subject’s coronation date, since that would have been the Pharaoh’s “birth” as a god.

    2. Greeks added candles to cakes.

The Greeks offered moon-shaped cakes to Artemis as a form of tribute to the lunar god-

dess. To recreate the radiance of the moon and her perceived beauty, Greeks lit candles and put them on cakes for a glowing effect. The Greeks most likely took the idea of birth-day celebration from the Egyptians, since just like the celebration of the pharaohs as “gods,” the Greeks were celebrating their gods and goddesses.

    3. Ancient Romans were the first to cele-brate birthdays for the common man (but

    just the men).

The prevailing opinion seems to be that the Romans were the first civilization to celebrate birthdays for non-religious figures. Romans would celebrate birthdays for friends and families, while the government created public holidays to observe the birthdays of more fa-mous citizens. Those celebrating a 50th birthday party would receive a special cake made of wheat flour, olive oil, honey and grated cheese. All of this said, female birth-days still weren’t celebrated until around the 12th century.

    4. Christians initially con-sidered birthdays to be a

    pagan ritual.

Due to its belief that humans are born with “original sin” and the fact that early birthdays were tied to “pagan” gods, the Christian Church considered birthday celebrations evil for the first few hundred years of its exist-ence. Around the 4th century, Christians changed their minds and began to celebrate

It is believed that the first actual birthday cake was made in Germany in the Middle Ages. The Germans would celebrate children's birthdays with cake, calling the celebration Kinderfest. Cakes originally were a coarse, bread-like product, and later became a much sweeter version, called Geburtstagorten

  • the birthday of Jesus as the holiday of Christmas. This new celebration was accepted into the church partly in hopes of recruiting those already celebrating the Roman holiday of Saturnalia.

    5. Contemporary birthday cakes were invented by German bakers.

Although the general idea of celebrating birthdays had already started taking off around the world — like in China, where a child’s first birthday was specifically honored — Kinder-feste, which came out of late 18th century Germany, is the closest prerequisite to the con-temporary birthday party. This celebration was held for German children, or “kinder,” and involved both birthday cake and candles. Kids got one candle for each year they’d been alive, plus another to symbolize the hope of living for at least one more year. Blowing out the candles and making a wish was also a part of these celebrations.

    6. The Industrial Revolution brought delicious cakes to the

    masses.

For quite some time, birthday celebrations involving sugary cakes were only available to the very wealthy, as the necessary ingredi-ents were considered a luxury. But the industrial revolution allowed celebrations like kinderfest and the subsequent equivalents in oth-er cultures to proliferate. Not only did the required ingredients be-come more abundant, but bakeries also started offering pre-made cakes at lower prices due to advances in mass production. 7. “The Birthday Song” was a remix, kind of.

In 1893, Patty Hill and Mildred J. Hill wrote a song they called, “Good Morning To All,” which was intended to be sung by students before classes began. The song eventually caught on across America, giving rise to a number of variations. Robert Coleman eventually published a songbook in 1924, add-ing a few extra lyrics that would quickly come to overshadow the original lines. The new rendition became the version we now all know, “Happy Birthday To You.”

Jump to German origin story - In 18th century Germany, the history of candles on cakes can be traced back to Kinderfest, a birthday celebration for children. ... There, they were free to celebrate another year in a place where Germans believed that adults protected children from the evil spirits attempting to steal their souls. hankeringforhistory.com/the-history-of-the-birthday-cake/

In Ancient Greece, Artemis was the god-dess of the hunt, as well as the moon (Her twin brother, Apollo, was god of the sun). It is said that cakes brought to the temple of Artemis were adorned with candles to make them glow like the moon.

Next time you bite into a birthday cake, thank the ancient Greeks. They're the reason we eat cake and blow out candles at birthday

    parties.

Some historians think that the birthday cake was observed in an-cient Greece where the cake was made with

    honey.
