Denso Steelcoat™ ProtectsScottish Water Pipes The Denso Steelcoat 100/400™ System has been used toprotect two water pipes below a footbridge which crosses asmall stream at Scottish Water's Killylour Water TreatmentWorks, in Dumfries & Galloway.

The Denso Steelcoat100/400™ System comprisesDenso Hi-Tack Primer™, DensoProfiling Mastic™, Denso Hi-TackTape™, Denso Ultraseal Tape™

and Denso Acrylic Topcoat™. Thesystem provides an excellentcoating solution for exposedsteelwork, particularly in areasthat are faced with constantlydamp or humid conditions.

Due to the complexity ofthe structure and the smallgaps between the pipes andsupporting steel beams, boththe Hi-Tack Tape and UltrasealTape had to be applied by amixture of techniques.This involved “weatherboard”methods at the joints and“spiral” and circumferentialwrapping of the barrel lengths.

On some sections, the rolls oftape were partially “decanted”onto empty cores to allow spiralwrapping where possible.

The main contractor for thisproject was George Leslie Ltd.Sub-contractor was HySpecServices Ltd.

Queen’s Marque Wharf PilesProtected with SeaShield™

The Province of Nova Scotia, located on Canada’s AtlanticCoast is home to the city of Halifax, the provincial capital.

Nova Scotia recently commissioned the city of Halifax toundertake the building of an impressive new waterfront facilitycalled the Queens Marque. Known originally as Queen’sLanding, the Queen’s Marque site was a hub of historicallysignificant activity which helped define the city of Halifax overthe past 150 years.

The construction of this newwaterfront area involvedbuilding several wharfs whichrequire long term protection ofthe supporting piles. To preservethese important structures,Harbourside Engineering inNova Scotia specified Denso’sSeaShield 2000 HD System.

The contractors, DexterConstruction and DominionDiving have already completedthe first phase of the project,installing close to 200 x 20” x 5’jackets covering roughly 4500

Seashield™ Protection forBHP Wharf RemediationProject – Nelson Point Port Hedland is located in the Pilbara region of WesternAustralia and is home to BHP’s Iron Ore Industry. Australiaplays an important role in meeting the demands of this marketand exports approximately 85-90% of production each year,making it a valuable natural resource. With this comes theneed to protect and extend the life of the loading docksand its steel structures.

Denso was awarded theproject in April 2017, whichutilised the SeaShield 2000 FD™

System for long-term corrosionprotection in the splash-zonearea in Berths A and B.

Installation is still ongoinghowever, and to date 60% of the974 piles have been completed.The contractors ‘TAMS’ surfaceprepped the steel piles inaccordance with thespecification before applying

jacket. It is expected that thesystem will support the docksoperational cycle for 25+ years.

Seashield™ Protection for BlueScope Wharf Piles in Western

Port, Hastings

Hastings is located on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, and is home to Australia's largeststeel manufacturer, BlueScope. BlueScope are manufacturing industry leaders for the Australiandomestic market and have international business relations in America and across Asia Pacific.BlueScope owns the wharf at its Western Port Plant in Hastings and maintains it to ensure that itis available at all times for efficient movement of products in and out of the Western Port plant.

Part of the ongoingmaintenance to the BlueScopewharf has been the progressiveinstallation of Denso SeaShield2000 FD™ jackets to the HP2Octagonal Steel piles. Denso have manufactured and suppliedhundreds of the SeaShield 2000FD jackets for the stages ofmaintenance work undertaken to date.

50 Year Denso Case History;Protecting Steel RollerSystem for Water TanksIn the late 1960’s, SA Water built large capacity water tanksas storage and head of pressure for Whyalla and thesurrounding suburbs.

The design of these tanksincorporated a roller system toallow for both thermal andpressure related expansion andcontraction. The rollers were setinto the concrete and after some50 years of service the concretesurrounding the rollers hascarbonated which has causedthe concrete to fail. Theconcrete areas required repair inorder to reinstate the structuralintegrity of the tank wall.

Upon inspection it was notedthat the rollers had beenprotected using theDenso Petrolatum System.

Coatings for Buried Pipes

The petrolatum tape wasremoved to inspect thecondition of the steel. The steelunder the petrolatum tape wasstill in perfect condition. In fact,the original stamp used by theSA Water Inspector was stillclearly visible. This is a testamentthat the Denso Paste™ andDenso Petrolatum Tape was stillprotecting the steel structuresome 50 years down the track.

The Denso Tape has beenreinstated using Denso Hi-TackTape™ with an Elastomerictopcoat. This updated Densosystem is once again designedto provide cost-effectivecorrosion protection well intothe future.

Denso P2 Protection Systemfor Hereford Water PipelineLewis Civil Engineering is currently constructing an 8km lengthwater main pipeline in Hereford for Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water.

Winn & Coales (Denso) Ltdwere contacted for informationon the most suitableanti-corrosion system along withapplication training of LewisEngineers for the pipeline'sViking Johnson joints.

The selected Denso systemmeets the P2 Civil EngineeringSpecifications for Water Industryand consists of Denso PrimerD™, Denso Profiling Mastic™ and150mm width Densoclad 70™

Tape. Denso Profiling Mastic is avital part of the system, it isapplied to seal the voids, boltsand heads around the joints toavoid moisture entrapment. TheDensoclad Tapes consist of athick polymer-bitumen adhesive,giving superior adhesion andflexibility, laminated to a toughplasticised PVC backing.

It is expected that Lewis CivilEngineering will install morethan six hundred 700mm by600mm joints and nearly twohundred 700mm diameter VikingJohnson joints. In addition tothis there are six 450mmdiameter spigot & socket jointpipes. All pipe lengths and jointswere supplied in new condition,

Dubai is set to be host ofExpo 2020: a UniversalExposition that celebrateshuman ingenuity and begins onOctober 20th 2020. Thesix-month long festival isexpected to bring millions ofvisitors into Dubai and thesurrounding areas. The DubaiMunicipality has recognised thiswill put a strain on the sewagetreatment facilities in the region.With this in mind, constructionof a new sewage treatmentfacility began in 2016 withcompletion planned in 2019.The new sewage treatmentworks will ensure Dubai'ssewage output will be treated tointernational standards andwithout environmental concerns.

Dubai has strict irrigationwater standards due to itsdesert location. The new facilitywill allow the city to cut back theuse of desalinated seawater fornon-potable use by 700 millionlitres per day. The main

contractors on the project,Besix and L&T, are in theprocess of constructing 77 newtank clusters and buildingstructures in order to fulfill thistarget. All of these new

structures require a substantialamount of buried pipework toconnect them all. Through localagent Bin Moosa & Daly Ltd,Denso have been selected toprovide two systems to ensure

the long-term protection ofburied pipework throughoutthe facility.

System 1 (small diameterpipework). The first system is apetrolatum tape wrap system forpipework of small 40mm and80mm diameters. Denso Paste™

is used as a primer with DensylMastic™ used to create evenprofiles around bolts andawkward shapes. Densyl Tape™

is then spirally applied to thepipework with a 55% overlap toensure full, even coverageacross the length of the pipeand associated fittings. Finally, alayer of Denso PVC Outerwrap™

is applied to fully seal thesystem and provide excellent UVprotection until the pipework isbackfilled.

System 2 (medium to largediameter pipework). Thesecond system is for medium tolarge diameter pipework. Areinforced bitumen tape systemis selected to provide a morerobust tape coating. A bitumenbased primer (Denso Primer D™)is applied before the Densopol60HT™ Tape is spirally wrappedwith a 55% overlap.

The second system is alsocompleted with Denso PVCOuterwrap™ for UV protection inthe local tropical desertenvironment. Picture of the completed second system for larger diameter pipes prior to backfill.

Houston, TX has experienced a major construction boom inrecent years. With the recent devastation of Hurricane Harvey,a large number of steel sheet pile projects have been includedin this construction for added flood control. Many of the city’swaterways are being revamped in the hopes it will helpprevent another catastrophic flooding event like Harvey.Corrosion protection for sheet piles is paramount to theirlong-term service life as they are extremely difficult to repaironce corrosion has begun.

Denso Protal™ ProtectsFlood Control Sheet Piles

For decades, the mostpopular method to protect sheetpiles has been coal tar epoxycoatings due to the low cost andexcellent water resistance.However, many problems ariseduring the application of thesestandard coal tar epoxies suchas delamination between

multiple coats, poor adhesion,and long cure times. These issuescan cripple the applicator’sproduction rates and lead topremature coating failures oncethe sheet piles are in service.

The Protal 600 CTE™ (Coal TarEpoxy) was chosen for this sheetpile project in Harris County, TX

due to its high build one coatapplication, excellent adhesion,abrasion resistance and fast curetime. The coating was sprayapplied using a Graco 70:1

Protal 600 CTE™ Part “A” & “B” beingmixed prior to the spray application.

The owner was very pleasedwith the quick delivery, successof installation, and quality of thecoating. The owner andapplicator have made the Protal600 CTE their coating of choicefor sheet pile protection. Densoalso manufactures an alternativeProtal 650 CTR which is areplacement to coal tar epoxies.

Densostrip™ Seals NorthBerth Surfaces for HinkleyNuclear Power StationConstruction is well underway by Costain on the North Berthproject that will serve the forthcoming construction of theHinkley nuclear power station. Precast concrete units are beingapplied to the surfaces of the North Berth. As can be seen inthe photo, within the black circles, Winn & Coales Densostrip™

is used to permanently seal the concrete units following theapplication of Densostrip Primer™.

Densostrip is a compoundrubber and bitumen joint sealingstrip specifically for precastconcrete units to provide apermanently flexible watertightseal when compressed betweenjoint faces previously primed withDensostrip Primer. As well as beingresistant to water and sea water itis also resistant to chemical andbiological attack.

It is also an effective seal forprecast concrete box culverts,manholes, inspection chambers,shafts, tunnels and pipe sections.
