CAUGht iN thE MiDDLEwilliam h. thielen

April 1-28William H. Thielen employs the language of abstraction in his oversized works constructed of wooden shapes. For him, “the process of abstraction is one of spontaneity, flexibility,

and trusting the intuitive nature of the act.” He deals with extremes, how they need each other to define each other, and the tension that is created when opposites are thrust together. Using a juxtapo-sition of geometric pat-terns with freehand shapes and line, he stimulates a feeling that the viewer must somehow resolve. Sometimes black and white motifs reminiscent of op art dominate while other times bright colors do.

A full-time studio artist from Carbondale, IL, Bill earned his M.F.A. in fibers after concentrating on painting for his under-graduate degree. He has produced award-winning art, exhib-ited throughout the U.S., received grants, conducted lectures, and has been featured in numerous publications.

international Arts Experience 2016

CUBA!June 3 – July 28Over the past fifty years, Americans have come to regard Cuba as “the forbidden fruit.” Curiosity runs deep and interest in the latest possibilities of a more open policy runs high. In Cuba, a country of contrasts, dilapidated buildings stand in the midst of much lively and colorful music, art and dance. While poverty abounds, the people find pleasure in life. A diverse mixture of Cu-ban, European, African, American, Chinese and Russian influences has produced an intriguing and rich culture that’s seemingly frozen in time (gotta love those vintage cars!)

The 2016 exhibit features the work of two local photographers, Sally McGuire and Virginia Kickle, whose photographs from recent trips to Cuba document many aspects of life on the island. Together with original art work – paintings, sculptures, pottery, cigar box illustrations – and arti-facts like musical instruments and dolls, the story of Cuba un-folds.

Opening Cultural Event friday, June 3, 5-7:30 pm. Open free to public. No passport required on Friday evening, June 3 when the entire Madden Arts Center comes alive with a Cuban experience! It’s a great outing for the entire family. Get a visual and read about Cuba as you tour the exhibit in the gallery. Create your own Cuban-inspired art piece. Groove to the sounds of authentic Cu-ban music and tease your taste buds with some delicious Cuban foods prepared by the Beach House.
