What is urgent care?

‣An alternate site for patients with less serious issues, who do not require all the resources available in an emergency department

‣Used in other municipalities as a strategy to reduce wait times

How is urgent care different than emergency services?

‣The UCC is not meant for patients with life-threatening issues

‣The UCC will not accept patients by ambulance

‣Patients can be admitted to hospital from the UCC

‣The UCC is open approximately 18 hours-a-day (peak volume) with the ability to extend hours if necessary

How is this different than a walk-in clinic?

‣The UCC will be run by the Acute Care Hospital and staffed by hospital emergency physicians and emergency workers from the Acute Care Hospital

‣Unlike a typical walk-in clinic, the UCC will include diagnostic imaging including a CT scanner, and laboratory services to allow physicians and other clinical staff to treat and diagnose more patient issues on-site

‣ 37,900 patients with less severe/non-life-threatening issues visit one of Windsor Regional Hospital’s two emergency departments every year

‣ 71% of these patients live within 10km of the proposed Urgent Care Centre

‣ Approximately 40% of patients who attend an ED today in Windsor could be seen at a UCC. 85% of the patients attending an ER today go home from the ER and are not admitted to a hospital bed

“The Urgent Care Centre will have an ultrasound and a CT scanner so it is much more than a walk-in clinic.  It is a place where real medical decisions can be made.”
