FOODS THAT PACK A NUTRITIOUS PUNCH A healthy diet is essential to long-term health. When coupled with routine exercise, healthy diets can be an effective way for men and women to reduce their risk of con-tracting a variety of diseases, not to men-tion the positive impact that such ahealthy lifestyle can have on an individ-ual’s quality of life. The following are ahandful of easily found foods that pack anutritious punch.
• Whole wheat and multigrain pasta:Once difficult to find, these low-calorie al-ternatives to traditional pastas are nowavailable in many large chain grocerystores as well as organic marketplaces. That’s good news, as a typical two-ounceserving of whole wheat or multigrainpasta typically includes about sevengrams of protein and six grams of fiber.
• Nonfat Greek yogurt: Nonfat Greek yo-gurt is a great low-calorie source of pro-tein, making it a great snack option formen and women who want a snack thatcan boost their afternoon energy levelswithout compromising their waistlines.Single serving containers of Greek yogurt tend to be right around six ounces, and thatsix ounces can include 120 grams of protein or more.
• Russet potatoes: If baked potatoes are a side dish you typically only enjoy in restau-rants, you might want to consider eating more of them at home. One medium-sized Rus-set potato is roughly 170 calories and includes three grams of fiber, five grams of proteinand 25 percent of your daily recommended dosage of potassium. Russet potatoes alsoare high in vitamin C and iron.
• Fresh spinach: Popeye was on to something, as a four cup serving of fresh baggedspinach is just 20 calories and loaded with vitamins and nutrients. Just one serving offresh bagged spinach can provide 160 percent of the recommended daily value of vitaminA and 40 percent of the daily value of vitamin C. Spinach is also a great source of folicacid, which can help prevent heart disease, stroke and certain types of cancer.
• Dried lentils: Dried lentils make great additions to salads, soups and stews and pack anutritious punch despite their relatively small serving size. A single serving of dried lentilsis 1⁄4 cup, and that serving includes 10 grams of protein and 11 grams of fiber.
• Brown rice: A single 1⁄4 cup serving of brown rice has roughly 20 less calories than asimilar serving of traditional white rice, and brown rice is also a much greater source ofdietary fiber (1.8 grams) than white rice (0.4 grams). Brown rice also is rich in selenium, which can reduce a person’s risk of developing arthritis, certain cancers and heart dis-ease.
DID YOU KNOW?Consuming excessive amounts of sodium not only affects your health but also may affectyour appearance. A diet that’s rich in sodium has long been linked to a host of healthproblems, including high blood pressure, stroke, kidney disease, and stomach cancer. But consuming too much sodium also leads to increased water retention, which cancause weight gain and make men and women appear puffy and bloated. According tothe American Heart Association, the recommended daily sodium intake is 1,500 mil-ligrams. But the AHA notes that the average American consumes more than double thatamount on a daily basis, and Health Canada asserts that Canadians also eat roughlythe same amount of sodium each day as their American counterparts. While sodium isan essential nutrient, the human body does not need a lot of it to reap its benefits. Bread, processed meats and soups are some of the major contributors of dietary sodium, somen, women and even children, who the AHA notes are far more likely to develop highblood pressure as adults if they consume a high-sodium diet as a child, should studypackaging on these items to ensure they aren’t overloaded with sodium.

HOMEBUYERS, BEWARE BEFORE BUYING
(NAPSI)—For many, finding and buying the right home is still a big part of the Americandream.
However, that dream home can turn into a nightmare when hidden costs from weatherand other types of damage start adding up.
It’s not uncommon for consumers to find out about these hidden costs rather late in theprocess. That’s because until now, buyers had to wait until just before closing to receivea “seller’s disclosure.”
This is a document that reveals details about the house the buyers plan to purchase. Atthat point, it’s likely that a prospective buyer has already paid thousands of dollars forlegal fees, inspections, deposits and title fees and may be reluctant to back out of thedeal.
Fortunately, there is a resource that buyers can call on earlier in the process. Real estatetycoon and “Shark Tank” host Barbara Corcoran suggests going online to find propertyhistory and insurance claims on a home. An Insurance Claims report can give home-buyers and Realtors information that was previously only available to homeowners.
For instance, a company called Housefax offers online reports that provide a compre-hensive history of a home, including building permits; mortgage information; insuranceclaims; fire, flood, hail and catastrophic history; and other residential property details.
The reports also include information on schools in the district, current property assess-ment values and inspector alerts.
For more information, contact Housefax at www.housefax.com.

Here’s a little blast from the past for you since the old year end inventory has me a little pressed for time. If you can come up with nay more idioms, please forward them along to me.
Lately I’ve cultivated an interest in all the plant and gardening terms that have blos-somed into common use. I thought I’d branch out of my normal green thumb routine and root
kernel of an idea that you might think is corny but, as I plowed into it, the idea blossomed. I realized that it would be a tough row to hoe. I wouldn’t be out of the woods until I could come up with enough terms to use as examples. If I couldn’t, the whole idea would wither on the vine. Flowery prose wouldn’t be enough. I decided that the best idea would be to ask around to see if anybody else had any ideas.
I went next door and asked the young mother who lived there if she had any ideas. Her husband was home and they were entertaining some of his guy friends that afternoon.
thorns. I’ve always considered her husband to be a bit of a sap but she was always fresh as a daisy. She had told me before that her family roots were in the Big Apple. She and her family
ness was very good and they found that they were soon rolling in clover. His business was growing by leaps and bounds. They had recently had identical twin girls and they were like peas in a pod. They also had an older son and they felt bad about uprooting him from his old
transplanting well. The young sprout was the spitting image of his father. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree after all. The husband’s hobby was restoring cars and his latest
could tell by the way he bragged about and polished it that it was the apple of his eye. He
was as nice. I told him that his car was quite sharp and reminded him that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
It was at this point that he noticed a long scratch on the side of the car. He thought I’d done it. I could tell by his furrowed brow that he was quite upset. I could see that this was becoming a thorny situation. I told him that I hadn’t gone near his car and that he was bark-ing up the wrong tree. I tried to be as cool as a cucumber. He was not placated and my rosy outlook evaporated. My quest for gathering gardening idioms had so far only provided this bitter harvest. He seemed quite perturbed and he and his buddies started to approach me in such a threatening manner that I feared they would mow me down and I’d soon be pushing up
and by the time I reached home I was plum tuckered out.
So here I was with the fruits of my labor wasted. My budding interest in gardening idioms had been nipped in the bud by this unseemly altercation with my neighbor. Knowing that you reap what you sow, I considered offering my irate neighbor an olive branch as a gesture of good will. I decided that he was such a snake in the grass that it would be a waste of time. It was time to seek out greener pastures.
This idea was turning out to be no bed of roses. I felt as though I’d led myself up the garden
needed to come up with something quick since my deadline was fast approaching. I couldn’t let the grass grow under my feet any longer than I already had. I need the help of someone who really knows their onions. There’s no one in my family tree that I thought would be of help so I’ll have to turn to you; my readers.
Try as I might I can’t seem to come up with any garden or plant idioms. If you can think of any, please forward them along to The Weekly. Thanks for the read.
