Training and Game Day Expectations Training
Junior Rules Teams: The junior teams are scheduled to train one night per week, typically this
has been between 5.00pm to 6.00pm although it does depend on ground availability, scheduling is
currently being finalised. Training for Junior Teams may be any of Tuesday, Wednesday and
Thursday Nights.
Training is predominantly skill based. Parent participation is strongly encouraged on training
nights. The drills often run more effectively when there are more adults assisting.
Youth Teams: The youth teams train twice a week for between 1 & 1 ½ hours. The specific nights
will depend upon ground utilisation and the individual voaches preferences. Nights could be any
combination of nights between Monday and Friday.
With Training Space at such a premium at Wilston Grange the Committee is actively working on
long term additional training space solutions, however, these are unlikely to be finalised for
training during the 2015 season. Alternative, short term solution are being negotiated and these
may result in some teams needing to travel to alternative venues for some training sessions.
Game Day
Each coach/team will have a preference for the amount of time players should be arriving at their
designated fields before the game starting time. As a general rule junior players should expect to
arrive at the field at least 30 minutes prior to start time. For youth players that requirement is more
likely to be 1 hour prior to the start time.
This time is essential for a number of reasons:
Team Managers and players have paperwork which needs to be completed prior to the start
of the game,
Coaches will brief the team and for the junior teams coaches will sort out armbands, and
may consult with opposition teams to allow for even team numbers.
Jerseys are distributed.
Players warm up before taking the field.
When the team is playing at home the fields may also need to be set up.
Umpires will check boots and finger nails prior to commencement of each game.
Code of Behaviour
Junior Sport is and should always be about the child. As parents it is difficult not to get
“overenthusiastic” about a game where your child is involved, but it is just as important to ensure
that our children are getting the right message.
AFL has introduced a number of programs targeting the sideline behaviour at junior sporting
matches – these include the “Kids First” and “We’re not playing for Sheep Stations”. Wilston
Grange supports both of these concepts and endeavours to adhere to the Code of Conduct agreed
to by every parent when they register their child in the Brisbane Juniors Competition.
Just to remind us all what we agreed to below is the “Code of Conduct” included on the back of
the Brisbane Juniors Registration Form or as part of the Terms and Conditions when you
completed your online registration.
Volunteers/Rosters
Wilston Grange Juniors is no different to any other junior sporting club around as we rely entirely
on volunteers. Every week there are a number of jobs that must be carried out – each team will
have a roster for all the required tasks – we ask that you make it your responsibility to ensure you
know when you are rostered on to carry out a task. The more people that chip in, the easier it is for
everyone – including the children. We all want to see our kids play – so remember if you shirk
your responsibility by not carrying out a rostered task it probably means someone else is missing
their child’s game.
The tasks differ depending upon the age group that your child plays – as they get older more
volunteers are required for each game. Some roles are only required when the team is playing at
home and some are required for every game. If you have any difficulties in performing your
nominated roster – please discuss this with the team manager as soon as possible – don’t leave it
until the morning of the game – this is guaranteed to create unnecessary stress for managers and
other parents alike.

Coach – each coaches must be accredited through AFLQ with varying levels of accreditation
depending upon the age group they are coaching. The Club assists with this.
Team Managers – the Team Managers carries out a number of functions in relation to the
team. They complete all the required paperwork to ensure that the game can be played, prepare
rosters and co-ordinate volunteers. The managers are the point of contact about anything that
happens on the sidelines. On field issues are usually the domain of the coach.
Ground Marshall – The Ground Marshall has a number of responsibilities – it is strongly
recommended that each team find a parent who is prepared to take this role on a weekly basis.
The Ground Marshall will receive a AFL BJ’s Ground Marshall Checklist from the Umpire and
will be responsible for completing it. This form outlines the requirements of the Ground Marshall
in more detail.
The Ground Marshall duties include but are not limited to.
inspect the ground prior to the commencement of the game to ensure that the field is safe to
play on;
completes the checklist when inspecting the field;
addresses any issues relating to the behaviour of supporters.
the only means of contact with the Game Umpire – any communication from Coaches,
Managers or any other person must go through the Ground Marshall.
Take care of the umpire – escorting on an off field, taking drinks at the breaks and will
need to be in attendance with the umpire should there be a report during the game.
A detailed job description for the Ground Marshall is included in each Managers Kit. (If there are
two games happening on the same field – usually Under 6 to Under 10 – only one Ground
Marshall is required between the two games)
First Aid - Each club is responsible for providing First Aid at every home game. A game cannot
commence without the presence of a registered qualified First Aid Officer. At Wilston Grange
there are two different types of First Aid Officer, for Under 6’s to Under 11’s the First Aid Officer
is a Club Volunteer who has current Applied First Aid Qualifications or higher and registered with
the League. If you hold qualifications please let your team manager know so that you can be added
to the register. The Club provides First Aid Training for anyone wishing to undertake the role of
First Aid Officer. For the Youth Teams, league requirements are a minimum of Applied First Aid,
however, the type and nuture of injuries differs significantly– for this reason the club engages the
services of a Sports Trainer wherever possible, including the development of our own parents to
the level will appropriate skills.
Timekeepers – Timekeepers are required for all games. For junior teams – Timekeeping is done
from the sidelines with stopwatches and gas horn. Where more than one game is on the field at the
same time – teams will be encouraged to run with a single timekeeper. For the Youth Teams
timekeeping will be carried out in Timekeepers booth using the field siren and stopwatches
provided in team kit.
Goal Umpires – A set of Flags are provided with each team kit. A Goal Umpire is provided by
both home and visiting team. For Youth Games – Goal Umpires must be adults.
Boundary Umpires – A Boundary Umpire is provided by each youth team for every Game.
This role is handled at the discretion of each team. Some teams will use the same volunteer or a
small group of volunteers for each game, others share the role around. Boundary Umpires must
wear bibs included as part of the team kit and wear closed in shoes. Whistles will also be part of
the team’s kits. Teams may split the field running two boundary umpires per side, both must wear
bib and have whistle.
Water Carrier – Each Youth Team must provide its own water carrier – they must wear the
water carrier bibs included in the team kit and wear closed in shoes. Where possible the team will
have chin sipper water bottles which will be used by the water carriers. Water carriers may only
enter the field of play after a goal has been scored or at other official stop in play (eg first aid
stoppage, retrieval of ball from outside ground. Water Carriers are NOT permitted in the coach’s
box.
Runner – The Youth Teams require a runner to assist the coach in sending messages to the
players on the field. This role will usually be taken on by one parent or a small group of parents.
The runner must be wearing the provided bib and closed in shoes. Runners must deliver message
from coach and return to coach’s box immediately. They must not remain on the field to “coach”
players.
Canteen – Assistance may be required at different times during the year to man the canteen.
Teams will be notified when this is the case.
Jerseys – A roster will be provided for each family to take their turn to wash the team Jerseys.
Jerseys will be taken home at the end of the game one weekend and returned at the beginning of
the next game. If the team kit is incomplete when you are washing the gear, please make sure you
contact your team manager so that the missing Jersey/armbands can be located or replaced in time
for the next game.
Oranges/lollies – For the Under 8’s and the Auskick Rules Teams – parents generally take turns
in providing Oranges for the half time break. Some teams also extend to providing a bag of red
frogs or snakes for the end of each game. Rosters relating to the oranges depend upon the
preferences of each team. Many teams usually roster Jerseys and Oranges together – parents take
home the Jerseys one weekend and return them the next along with the oranges and lollies, others
will roster them separately. Please become familiar with the roster of your team.
Canteen
The Canteen is now operating in the Club House – assistance may be required at various times
throughout the season to support larger crowds – parents are expected to assist with this task when
called for.
Communication
During the season the club produces a newsletter in electronic format. This will be emailed to all
families and may include things like, upcoming events, match reports and general club news. Also
club members can look at our web-site and also like our Facebook page to get updates.
Communications within the teams will depend on the individual team management preferences.
Some will communicate by email, others by SMS or phone calls, some may hand out notices at
training. It is important that you become familiar with your teams preferred communication
methods. Game times can change from one week to the next – this means you need to check your
messages and be sure that you have the most up to date information. The draw for your team can
also be viewed on the AFLBJ website at any time.
During the off season the newsletter will be issued on an as needed basis.
Club Functions/Fundraising
During the course of the season there will be a number of fundraising functions. These events will
be organised in conjunction with the Seniors, Masters and the Juniors. When advertised we do ask
for your support, all proceeds from these fundraisers are returned to the club for the benefit of the
players and to assist in improving the facilities.
Teams may also hold social events during the course of the year; these decisions will be made on a
team by team basis in consultation with parents.
