WILMSLOW TRIATHLON 2018 General Info & Race Instructions
Registration/ information deskLocated in the reception/foyer area of the leisure centre. This is your first port of call – you will not be able to enter transition without your race numbers. You will be given a poolside arrival time via email (1 week before the event), please ensure you arrive at registration at least 45 minutes before your poolside arrival time. Registration is where you must show some ID:
• Home Nation Association members MUST show their current year membership cards (without this you will be charged £5 for a day licence)
• Non Home Nation Association members show a form of photo ID, e.g. driving licence. All non Home Nation Association competitors have already paid for their day licence.
You will be ticked off on the registration list, given your race number and be given your body tattoos to apply.
Race Safety BriefingBefore attending the briefing please ensure you know what race number you have been assigned. This is the number of give to you at registration. The race briefing is mandatory. It will confirm the format of the event and will be used to advise you of any safety notes and changes.
This is a busy event. Please be aware of other competitors, spectators and other leisure centre users.
Also be mindful of the forecast weather conditions and prepare appropriately.
If you are part of a relay, all team members MUST attend the briefing.
Swim 400m (16 lengths)Indoor 5-lane swimming pool of 25m length. Format is a staggered start of up to 20 competitors every 10-15mins. NO DIVING INTO THE POOL. There will be 3-5 swimmers in each lane during the swim. You will swim your 16 lengths in the direction (clockwise or anti-clockwise) indicated by the lane counters — please note it is your responsibility to count your own lengths.”. Swimmers will be shown a float under the water when they have two lengths to go. Please note we will do our best to keep to your allocated poolside arrival time. If you need to overtake another competitor during your swim, please follow the normal etiquette of tapping them gently on the foot, and overtaking at the next available end. If you are tapped on the foot by another competitor, please allow them to pass you when you reach the end of that length of the pool. When leaving the pool please do so by the fire exit to the side of the leisure centre and proceed onto the grass to the transition area.
Cycle (Approx 24.2km)PLEASE ENSURE THAT YOU ARE FAMILIAR WITH THE COURSE.
Starts and finishes at the leisure centre. See later in booklet for maps. Follow the YELLOW signs. Obey the Highway Code. Competitors will not be allowed to start without a helmet. Reminder: during the race do not put on or take off your helmet unless your bike is on the racking. Drafting will not be permitted. You must walk your bike between transition and the mount/dismount line. Proceed with caution as you enter and exit the leisure centre car park as there may be cars on the road here. Be aware that there are four speed humps along Broadway. At various points along the course, marshals will be there to advise but have no power to stop or control traffic – you are responsible for your own safety.
If you decide to use the cycle lane under the runway, please be careful of the kerb that runs down the middle.
On leaving the leisure centre, please be aware that other vehicles will be entering and exiting the car park. You do not have right of way – if any participants are seen to be cycling recklessly they will be disqualified.
Run (Approx 6.3km)Take care! Use pavements where possible and follow signs! Starts and finishes at the leisure centre. See later in booklet for maps.
This is a 1 LAP course and includes 2 footbridges.
The run uses the railway path and then after crossing the first footbridge, follows local roads.
You cross Macclesfield Road twice during the run – please be careful and use the Highway Code.
TransitionLocated on the grass outside the leisure centre. You will not be able to enter transition without showing your race numbers. Please use the security entrance to put your bike and equipment into transition. You will need to place any race equipment (e.g. bike, cycle/run shoes, etc.) in your ‘bay’ in transition – please ensure this does not hinder other competitors. Soft bags only allowed in transition, rigid boxes are not allowed. Only competitors may enter this area, for security reasons. Please find your race number marked on the relevant bay, and rack your bike and place equipment at this spot. Please be mindful of other competitors who are already competing. It is recommended that you walk through and familiarise yourself with the routes to/from your bay from/to the entrances and exits of transition prior to starting the race. Remember to leave your bike in a low enough gear, ready for the cycle section. Reminder: there is no cycling in transition – mount/dismount your bike at the mount/dismount point.

WILMSLOW TRIATHLON 2018 General Info & Race Instructions 6
Amendment of entry detailsCompetitors must notify the organisers of any corrections to entry details before starting the event. No exceptions will be made afterwards.
Race numbersArrive in good time to be able to collect your numbers from race registration before you start. Race numbers must be clearly visible for all three disciplines. Use safety pins or a race belt to attach your numbers. If wearing a race belt, please ensure the number can be seen through each timing point - during the cycling phase a number must be displayed to the rear; and during the running phase a number must be displayed to the front. Remember – you do not need to pin your running race number to your front during the swim. Racebelts are available to purchase at registration.
Electronic chip timingYou will receive your race timing chip and ankle strap at race registration. This must be attached to your ankle (this is where it has been designed to work at its optimum and fixing it anywhere else will jeopardise you getting your race times). You must wear your race strap throughout the whole race.
Relay team members will need to swap the strap over to the next team member’s ankle at each transition swap over.
Please return your chip to the marshal at the finish line. You will not be allowed to remove your bike without returning your chip and ankle strap. If you have lost your timing chip you will be charged £10 to remove your bike from transition.
The chip timing system will give you detailed results including all of your splits and a printout of your results will be available at the finish line.
New swycle and aquathlon optionsIf you are entering the swycle or aquathlon events, please follow the start instructions and attend your safety briefing before your swim start poolside.

After you have completed the swim leg, enter transition find your position, get ready for the run leg and then exit transition and follow the signs directing you around the run course. At the end of the run you will cross the finish line.
Swycle You will start the swycle with the swim leg in the same manner as the triathlon. After you have completed the swim leg, enter transition find your position, get ready for the cycle leg and then exit transition and follow the signs directing you around the cycle course. At the end of the cycle leg, dismount before the dismount line and push your bike into the transition area, your time will stop when you cross the timing mat on the way into transition. This information is designed to help you enjoy the race and to not incur penalties.
Drafting Competitors are not permitted to draft off other competitors during the cycle section of a race. The draft zone for sprint and standard distance events is a 10m zone with 20 seconds allowed for a competitor to pass through the draft zone. Remember to keep left at all times when you are not overtaking. If you are overtaken it is your responsibility to drop out of the overtaking cyclist’s draft zone.
Helmets Helmets used for events must meet the minimum standards of ANSI Z90, SNELL B90, EN1078 or equivalent – a CE mark is not an approved standard. Helmets must be on and securely fastened before removing your bike from its transition space and remain fastened until you have re-racked your bike. For relay teams, helmets must not be worn in relay exchange zones. They must remain on the bike before and after relay tagging.
Outside assistance
Athletes must not receive outside assistance from anyone who is not part of the event team, including being passed drinks or helped with equipment. The only exception relating to outside assistance is for medical issues, or when safety may be compromised.
Transition area Each athlete has their own space within the transition area, for their equipment. You are not permitted to ‘mark’ your space, and your equipment must not hinder other athletes as this will be considered as ‘unsporting impedance’. Soft bags only to be used for storage, no hard sided bags or boxes to be kept in transition. We do not provide event boxes. When leaving transition for the cycle leg, do not ride your bike until you have reached the mount line. Similarly when returning to the transition area you need to be off your bike before the dismount line.
Race numbers Athletes need to wear their race numbers at all times during the cycle and run section and they must be clearly visible. During the cycle section the number needs to be displayed at the rear and during the run it needs to be displayed at the front – a race belt is useful for this. The race number provided by Xtra Mile Events must not be cut down or altered in any way. The transfer tattoos should be used in conjunction with the official race number and are not considered a replacement.
Unsportsmanlike conduct Our race officials, event volunteers, spectators and other competitors should be treated with respect and courtesy. Please comply with requests from the race official and event volunteers as it will probably benefit you, or help you avoid a penalty.
Abusive and aggressive behaviour and language will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Course You are required to follow the course outlined in the race booklet and the race briefing. Not completing the specific course or the right number of laps will result in you being disqualified. It is your responsibility to know the course for each element and the number of required laps.
Banned and illegal equipment
The use of items such as mobile phones, film cameras and MP3 players is prohibited during events, including in transition. Using headphones at any time during the race can lead to instant dis-qualification.
NudityCompetitors who are publically nude at any point of the race risk disqualification. You cannot therefore get ‘completely changed’ in transition. Nudity also includes being topless during the bike or the run, or having front fastening tops unfastened.
