Gioachino Rossini (1792–1868) was a famous Italian composer of opera. He was so successful that he was able to retire at the height of his fame at the age of 37. Some of his best-known works are The Barber of Seville, The Italian in Algiers, La Gazza Ladra, Semiramide and William Tell. The overture to William Tell is one of the favorites of the orchestral repertoire. This arrangement features the first and final sections of this overture. The opening Lento is an excellent vehicle for developing clarity and purity of tone at softer dynamic levels. At measure 34 , the trumpets enter boldly with the Allegro Vivace fanfare leading to the famous “Lone Ranger” theme. Keeping the tonguing light will help in maintaining the sparkling energy of this work.
