    Introduction

THE title page of this pamphlet indicates clearly its contents. Itdoes not purport tobe a family history, nor a complete genealogy of the Pixley family 'in

America ;it is merely a list of some of the descendants of William Pixley, who settled first at Hadley, Mass., and afterwards lived at Northampton and Westfield (now Springfield), Mass.

The greater part of the data contained herein was collected by Edward Evans Pixley (No. 223), whose noble life and pathetic death are recorded herein. After his death additional material was gathered by the undersigned, and in 1899 the whole was placed in the hands of Mr.Edward Dinwoodie Strickland of Buffalo, N. V., who has added considerable matter and arranged the whole for publication.

Itis impossible to give here the names of all who have aided in gathering the data given in the following pages, but thanks are due especially to Mrs. A.P. Munn and Miss J. E. Pixley of Gates, N. V.; Mr.Henry D. Pixley ofUtica, N. V.;Dr. John P. Munn of New York City; Hon. E. S. Lacey, Chicago, 111.; Commander Edward Hooker, U. S. Navy; Mr. George W. Pixley, Fort Wayne, Ind.;Mr. Thomas Calef, Bridgeport, Conn.; Mr. Seward Babbitt, Pittsburg, Pa. ;Mr. John K.Pixley, Wyoming, Iowa;Mr. B. F. Pixley, St. Joseph, Mich.; Mr. Charles H. Pixley, Pixley, N. V., and Mr. George W. Pixley of Fort Wayne, Ind.

Itis requested that all who feel an interest in this work send corrections and additions to the undersigned, with the view that a more complete account of the descendants of William Pixley may be published in the future. _,

  • Foreword

THE system of numbering used in this history has been adopted only after a considerable study of the various methods employed by others. It appeals to the

editor as the simplest and therefore the most easily understood arrangement. Each person named has a definite number, by which he can be traced, the same whether he appears as parent or child. The generation given at the top of each page refers to the children named upon that page. To illustrate : On page 20, Fifth Generation, we find,

94.*Fanny {Pixley), born 1788. Fanny Pixley there appears as one of the children of

Isaac, whose number is 51. Following Isaac's name is that of his father in parentheses (John 20), with his number as an index figure. Following back the parent numbers until we reach 20, we find John's father to be Joseph, and his number 6, and so back to the first ancestor. Following Fanny Pixley's individual number is a

*mark, indicating that other data concerning her as a parent are given. Going on until we find 94 as a parent, on page 28, we find among her children, 193*Henry Hamilton (Sperry), who later appears as a parent ; and, 194. Mary (JSperry), about whom all available data is there given, indicated by the* absence of the mark. E. D. S.

    of His Descendants

—Beyond all doubt, the first of the name Pixley in America variously spelled in the earliest records of the Colonies as—

Pixley, Pixly, Pixlee was William Pixley, one of the earliest settlers of Hadley, Massachusetts. Hadley was first settled in 1661. Old Hadley street, twenty rods wide, extended north and south across the neck of a peninsula formed by a bend in the Connecticut river. There, in the northeastern part ofthe old town, as shown here indiagram, according toan old map of Hadley as itappeared in 1663, but two years after its early settlement, we find the name of "William Pixley" as . proprietor of land inproprietor of land in¦he far corner of the¦he far corner of thetownship. 1668 he moved from Hadley to Northampton. In the Records of Northampton Proprietors, we find him mentioned as the owner of "a home lot bought of Thomas Dewey as appears by a deed bearing date Novemr ye 24 1668 bounded butting on the highway South elyand upon the land ofJosiah Dewey Northelyand East ely and Thomas Salmons land West elycontaining five acres more or less." \ Again we find him named as the owner of two other "parcells", one probably about eight rods by four, the other "containing four acres be itmore or less."

He is recorded as having taken the "Oath of Aleageance administred by ye Worshipful Major Pynchon to

ye severall Inhabitants . . 1. of Northampton . ffebr 8, 1678." About 1680 he removed to Westfield, now Springfield, Massachusetts, where he died October 9, 1689. Sarah (Lawrence) Pixley, wife of William, joined the church in Westfield November 7, 1686. She died November (possibly December) 25, 1713. Eight children, two girls and six boys, one of whom died in infancy, were born to William and Sarah, and from five of these children we believe that all of the Pixleys have descended.

About the year 1700 he built there the house still known as the old Pixley Homestead, having it ready for occupancy at the time of his marriage. Itis situated on what was called Old Mill Green, in Stratford, and is now within the limits of Bridgeport, Conn. After the death of Peter Pixley" the old homestead passed outof the family. It isnow owned and occupied by Mrs. James Beach. Itis at present (1900) ina remarkably good state of preservation. The frame is of solid oak, hewed out and built in the most substantial manner. down to the ground. The original shingles are still on the sides, worn by the elements as thin as paper inmany places. They were nailed on with wrought nails, evidently made at a blacksmith shop. There is a large brick chimney in the center of the house, connected with which are five fireplaces ; an old-fashioned brick oven in the kitchen, and smoke-box for smoking meat in the attic. The door at the end is what is called a "milldoor," cut across the center. There is an old iron or brass knocker on the upper part. The porch in front and the kitchen part at the rear are of the present century, the rest of the house remains about as originally constructed. The grounds belonging to the place cover nearly an entire square in the city of Bridgeport, and are at the terminus of the East Main street ,electric line, on the corner of North avenue and East Main street. William Pixley was thrown from his horse at Rocky Hill, in Pequonnock, Conn., and died from his injuries. The inventory of his property was taken March 17, 1712, amounting to to which his widow made oath.

    16. Jonah (Joseph*), born March 3, 1701 ; died August 18, 1759; married ,Elizabeth Hamon. He removed to Great Barrington and had there one proprietary right of 400 acres. In December, 1743, Jonah and his brother, John (20), James Sexton, Ashael King and Jonathan Nash became the charter members of the second church in Sheffield (Great Barrington), the Rev. Samuel Hopkins, pastor. Jonah is named as one of the most active members during the earliest years of this church. He was the first deacon of the church, chosen probably at its formation. In April, 1744, Sheffield granted old tenor, for a school in the North Parish (Sheffield), and appointed Moses Ingersoll, Jonah Pixley and Isaac Van Deusen a committee "to see that there is a school-master or school-mistress or dame provided, and also to see itbe kept in such places as shall be thought necessary and convenient in said Parish.'* Jonah was given one proprietary right of 400 acres in the settlement of Great Barrington.

    17. Joseph (Joseph*), born May 4, 1703 ; married Sarah Smith. He was one of the committee of Great Barrington, chosen at the first town meeting of the proprietors assembled in the Upper Township, March 8, 1742, at the house ofDaniel Nash, to determine upon the site and take charge of the building of "a meeting house for the public worship of God, and to erect said house on the east side of the river," and "to agree with some proper person or persons that shall appear to undertake the building of said house and to find all materials and finish said house within and without." This meeting of the proprietors was held under the authority granted by the House of Representatives, January 13, 1742, empowering the inhabitants "by a major vote, at a meeting or meetings properly called for that purpose, to raise money for the building of a con-

venient meeting house for the public worship of God insuch place on said land as they shall agree upon ;and also, from time to time, to agree with and support an able, learned and Orthodox minister to preach the word among them."

An interesting account of the laying off of Great Barrington as the North Parish, or Upper Township of Sheffield, 1742-1761, and of thebeginnings of the church life of said township, in which frequent mention of Joseph (17) and John (20) Pixley occurs, is contained in Taylor's History of Great Barrington (pages 76 to 100), published in 1882. The entire book ought to prove of great interest to every descendant of William Pixley (1), because more Pixley history clusters in and about the Housatonic townships, Sheffield, Great Barrington, Egremont and Stock-bridge, than may be found in the history of any other one locality in the United States.

    18. Abigail {Joseph^), born May 29, 1705; died June 28, 1759; married December, 1728, Isaac Fowler, of Westfield, Mass.; born November 12, 1697; died May 28, 1790; son of Ambrose Fowler, of Windsor, Conn.

    42. Ebenezer^ born September 28, 1729 ;married Catherine Root.

    43. Rachael, born August 6, 1733 ; died October 26, 1738.

    44. Mercy, born September 8, 1736. 45. Abigail^ born August 8, 1739; died September

    21, 1739. 46. Isaac, born December 21, 1741.

    19. Moses (fosepA*), born June 9, 1707 ; died in 1771 ; married Sarah Lyon. He settled in Great Barrington, Mass. At the first town meeting "assembled at the meeting house, on Wednesday, July 22, 1761, at 4 o'clock, p. m.," he was named on the jurylist as one of the "freeholders" qualified for jury duty.

John became one of the five charter members of the second church inSheffield, and at the meeting held March 8, 1742, as above mentioned, was named to act with Joshua Root as collector of the one hundred and sixty-two pounds ten shillings to be raised toward the building of said meeting house. John was also one of the committee of three appointed at that time "to provide some suitable person or persons to preach the Gospel Word amongst us, in order for his settlement in the ministry." At the first parish meeting, held March 29, 1745, John Pixley was rewarded by an appropriation of "two pounds,— ten shillings, new tenor, for going to get a minister, to be paid by the proprietors;" and also with "thirty shillings, new tenor, for moneys which he paid Mr.Thomas Strong, for preaching among us."

At this same parish meeting the parish voted "to the Rev. Mr. Hopkins logs for boards and stone for house" and John Pixley and Jonathan Nash were appointed "to take an account of the logs and stone, and toprise said logs to Mr. Hopkins, and also the stone when brought for his building." Another record reads, "March 28, 1749. Voted to John Pixley one pound, old tenor, for making School House Hearth."

John Pixley served in the campaign of 1755, French and Indian war, in the first company, commanded by Capt. Joseph Dwight. In the records under date of October 11,

1756, at Fort William Henry, we find the following: "John Pixley, sergeant, sick at Albany."

The death of John Pixley occurred on the day following that of Asahel King, both charter members of the church. The following entry is quoted from the private dairy kept by their pastor, Rev. Samuel Hopkins :

"Monday, November 1, 1756. Attended the funeral of Sergeant John Pixley, who died last night, about nine o'clock. Asahel Kingand John Pixley were members of this church, and both friendly to me and the interest of religion, and were some of the most constant attenders on public worship."

Among other town appointments that make curious reading today we findJonathan Pixley named as one of the Hog Reeves, at a meeting held July 22, 1761, in the town of Great Barring-ton. He lived also within the township of Stockbridge. He was killed by the overturning of a load of rails in descend

William lived in the old homestead, which he kept as a tavern during the Revolution. Tradition says that Washington stopped at the tavern. As the house was" directly on the old King's Highway" between New York and Boston, the story is not improbable. He was a member of the Committee of Observation, called also the Committee of Inspection after the Declaration of Independence, to watch the conduct of the inhabitants. From the records of the town meeting held September 21, 1779, we find that he was a member of the committee "to assist and inform the informing officers of all breaches of laws that shall come to their knowledge, that all the wicked tribe ofmonopolizers, engrossers, forestallers and stock-jobbers who enhance the prices of the necessaries of life and depreciate our currency, may be brought to condign punishment, that their pernicious practices be prevented :" Children by first marriage :
