2017 CLUB AWARDS

Leading Goal Kicker: Jacob Gittos First year League player Jacob Gittos has led the club’s goal kicking table for the 2017 season.

The livewire 20-year-old booted 35 goals from his 18 league games this

season, hitting the scoreboard in 16 games. Gittos had 7 hauls of 3 or more

goals in his first full season of senior football, with his best performance

coming in Round 16 at Kenwick where he kicked 5 goals.

Jacob is a star player of the future for our club and we congratulate him on

what is hopefully the first of many accolades in his career with the Blues.

Adam Mouttet Rising Star Award: Jamie Meade Jamie joined the Club during pre-season after playing with East Fremantle

and immediately impressed. He played two Colts game at the start of the

season before making his League debut in Round 3. League Coach Kyle

Martin describes him as a player who is “hard at it, doesn't take a backward

step and is courageous with great skills.” He continued to impress across

the half-back line until an ankle injury in Round 15 ended his season

prematurely and left a big hole in the team. Despite his disappointment, Jamie showed the

depth of his character and continued to support his teammates at training and on game day. He

is a young man of great quality and is well liked and respected around the Club.

Jim Grace Clubperson Award: David Philp David Philp has been our Registrar since 2014 and was a general committee

member prior to that in 2013. This year he was also part of the Events Sub-

Committee (along with Brendan Gotti) and was instrumental in organising

Ladies Day, Past Players Day, An Afternoon with Dane Swan, Gibb Medal

Night and other events during the season. He worked behind the bar almost

every Thursday and most Saturday nights, and was often one of the last

ones at the club cleaning and closing up well after the crowds had left. He

also took on the role of ordering and purchasing playing and non-playing

apparel and merchandise. This is on top of his training and playing

commitments during the season.

David has shown all the qualities that embody the Jim Grace Clubperson Award and he is a

worthy winner. He is the second Philp to win the award after his father Rod won in 2013. Once

again, nominations for the Jim Grace Clubperson Award were taken from the club’s

membership. We congratulate the following members who were nominated by their peers:

Brendan Gotti

Ryan Harder

Josh Harder

Rod Philp

Georgie Steacy

PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Damian Chandler

I have had many reasons to feel proud of the Willetton Football Club over my five years as

President, and 2017 has given me even more. To see our Thirds team overcome

insurmountable odds to knock off the minor premiers and take out the E3 Premiership was the

ultimate reward for a group of players who personify what community football is all about.

Watching our inaugural Integrated team represent the Club with such passion for the game and

each other was inspiring and the generosity of the players and members in raising money for

cancer research during Ladies Day shows a desire to make a difference to our community.

League Coach Kyle Martin, in his third year at the Club, continued to build on the foundations of

the previous seasons and was rewarded with some impressive results during the season. While

missing out on finals was disappointing, it was again great to see a number of Colts get

exposed to League football, as well as seeing players from the Reserves get rewarded with

promotion for good form in the twos. Kyle oversaw three new coaches in the other grades –

Michael Hnatojko joining us from Thornlie to coach the Colts, former League player Brenton

Miller looking after the Reserves, and Tim Boulton stepping up as player-coach of the Thirds.

The Colts had a slow start to the season as they struggled for numbers early. They found their

groove, and a few new players, by mid-way through the season, and just fell short of making the

finals. This team has great potential to grow over the next couple of years and I am sure we will

see more success in the near future if all these boys stick together. Brenton Miller shows

fantastic aptitude for coaching and making a Grand Final in his first season is something to be

proud of. Although we went down on the day, the team never gave up and will be hungrier than

ever next season. Tim Boulton had a fairy tale season with the Thirds and while he struggled to

get through a whole game on the field himself, he showed great leadership from the bench and

must think that coaching is the easiest thing in the world! All coaches worked fantastically well

together all season and it was a combined effort from all of them that saw two of our teams

reach Grand Finals.

Running a football club is a challenging job, and it takes unselfish service from a number of

people to keep it going. Ryan Harder has again shown his unwavering commitment to the Club

in his many roles, including Vice President, Football Operations Manager, statistician, historian

and international baseball umpire! Ryan has made my job considerably easier and he has been

a pillar of stability over the past three years. Mark Windsor as Treasurer kept an eye on the

books again this year, and despite a six-week mid-season trip to Europe, has really started

growing into the role. David Philp has been as reliable as ever and certainly deserves to receive

the Jim Grace Clubperson Award this year. He was my go-to man quite often during the season,

particularly towards the end when Ryan was away with umpiring duties. He was well supported

by Brendan Gotti when organising events for the year, and Brendan was always offering to help

out with anything and everything. Georgie Steacy and Ray Pratley were new additions in 2017

and provided a fresh perspective as non-players. They both took on additional managerial roles

for the Integrated and League team respectively and it is great to see them staying on for 2018.

Mitch Steacy was always full of new ideas and acted as a great mediator between the Colts

boys and the committee. Josh Harder was again indispensable in the many and varied duties

that he performed through the year. I’d also like to acknowledge Jaidon Tilbrook and Michael

Martella for their contributions.

Rod Philp has to be one of the hardest working blokes at the Club. Despite stepping down from

an official committee role, his work as Bar Manager often meant frequent visits to the Club to

stock the fridges, prepare food, clean up after functions, bring the bins in and out, pacify other

tenants and co-ordinate the bar roster. Other members of Dad’s Army were also tremendous

contributors – especially Steve Bull behind the bar and on the score board, Jim Grace also on

the score board and marking the boundary and Billy Jones on the BBQ. Special thanks to Kath

Philp who ran the canteen all year, with assistance from Trissy, Georgie Steacy, Janine Martin

and Rebecca Regnard. Thanks also to our Club umpires – James Haywood, Brennan Wilson,

David Tognolini, Corey Baynes, Harris Cooper, Mr Kyle and everyone else who donned the

orange shirt through the year.

I also want to acknowledge all of our sponsors. Our Club would not survive without you, and it’s

a great opportunity for us to support local businesses.

I sign off my tenure as President with a mixture of pride and relief; and a sense of

accomplishment yet unfinished business. I was able to achieve many of the goals I had coming

into the position, but there were also a number of things that didn’t quite go to plan. It was a

tremendous learning curve and I am grateful to everyone who has been a part of the Club over

this period, and to those who have provided advice and support to me. I also have to thank my

wife, Kym, for all of her patience and unwavering support over the years. I am keen to stay on in

an active role on the committee (and on the field!) and I hope everyone involved with the Club

will go around again in 2018. I am certain that if the incoming President, Scott Tognolini, and

Vice President, Jason Walker, show the kind of teamwork we saw in the forward 50 on Grand

Final day, then we are in good hands.

LEAGUE COACH’S REPORT – Kyle Martin 6th position - 7 wins, 10 losses, 1 draw, 98.34%, 45 players used Not the season we as a group where hoping for but in reality, probably where we deserved to

finish. Pre-season this year saw fitness guru Kyle Wheeler come back to the club after a stint

with A Grade club Curtin Uni Wesley, and he introduced a really good fitness program for the

boys. With the help of newly appointed club physio Daniel Hug, the boys where put through

their paces and produced a very promising pre-season. Easily the best one we have put

together in my 3 years at the club.

Although we started the season really well, the loss of players like Jack Kennedy, Leighton

Douglas, Ryan Atkinson and Brad Nicholas really early in the season was only going to hamper

us moving forward. After 4 rounds, we only had one loss to our name. However due to injuries

(not an excuse) and key players going on holiday or work commitments, the group began to

struggle and we found ourselves behind the 8-ball come the half way point of the season.

Nothing really improved in the back half of the season as we struggled to put wins on the board.

We were however very competitive in most games, and the improvement of guys like Seb

Correia, Aaron LoCicero, Lachy Baynes, Jake Gittos, Tim Cable, Matt Steacy, Jamie Meade,

Brendan Gotti and Jamie Pratley was really promising and a bright light to a rather disappointing

season. The fact we were competitive with Ballajura (2nd), Thornlie (1 win, 1 loss) and Noranda

(beat them twice by 9+ goals) is good for the future but also frustrating as we sit on the side

lines watching them play finals, knowing that if we made it we could have been very dangerous.

Hopefully moving forward, the league playing group will look back on this year, after watching

the 2s play finals and think to themselves “I need to work harder to improve because I don’t like

watching finals, I want to play in them”.

From a coaching point of view, it was a pretty frustrating year but made a lot less stressful

because of the help from Dwayne Green. Getting him on board and back to the club this year

was a big help. He was always there for advice and to take phone calls on a Monday for a chat,

and I hope he can hang around next season in some capacity. To Brenton Miller, Michael

Hnatojko Tim Boulton I thank you for your assistance this year in coaching your teams. Again,

without your help the season just doesn’t flow as easy.

To the committee and supporters, I apologise for not getting the results that you would have

expected this year. However, I do promise that sometimes to go forward in life you need to be

challenged and have failure, and although from the outside looking in it may not look great, I

truly believe that this club has what is needed to be successful, both on and off the field. In

whatever happens next year I will leave you with two things....

“Pain is short lived, Success will last forever”

And

“The harder you work, the harder it is to accept failure”

Kyle Martin

Home and Away Season

After end of season beers and another serious injury it was this time last year I decided to give

football away and look at heading down a different path. I wanted to stay actively involved in the

club that is in my heart and blood.

Its only now on reflection that I look back on what a wonderful season it was. The satisfaction

and joy I have gained coaching this group of fine young men far exceeded my expectations and

my passion for the game has only grown stronger.

Taking over the team from a close mate in Nathan ‘n-money’ Cocks I knew I had massive shoes

to fill. The expectation for the reserves to have another successful year only fuelled the fire to

make sure we achieved the best outcome over the course of the season.

The season started with a bang the reserves went on to win the first 9 out 10 games and placing

us on top the ladder equal with Kingsley at the hallway point. Unfortunately we lost a few

players to serious injuries along the way. Scott Shimmon a former colts captain ruptured his

ACL for third time and Cocksy suffered a serious face injury that forced him to retire as player

from the game he loves. Sadly, Brodie Chalwell also suffered another break to the arm he

broke the year before and Thommo suffered a back injury.

One positive out of the negatives is, what the team lost in a player they gained in a coach when

Nathan decided to return as an assistant coach and help me guide this team through the

second half of the season.

The second half of the season was slightly rougher journey. We had become the team everyone

wanted to beat, we had now become the hunted. However, the players responded well to the

challenge and only dropped two games in the second half. One was to Ballajura on what had to

be the worst conditions I have experienced for a football game with horizontal rains and a

freezing 6 degrees. To add to the conditions this was also the day some key members of the

squad decided to go on mid-season holiday to Melbourne!!!!

The second loss was Kingsley at home by a close 9 points we played some really good football

and was in the contest all game but the result didn’t go our way. These closes losses would

become the driving force to the team’s attitude to go one better when we play them in the finals.

End of the home and away season saw us sitting in second position with two chances at making

a grand final. This is where I learnt how hard it is coaching when having to tell players they

would not be in the squad. This was made easier by the understanding nature of most these

young men and the fact the thirds were still in the hunt meant they would get a run however

placing pressure on Bolts with his playing group.

Finals

Having 40 plus players qualified showed the depth within the club however we had the hard

decisions as a coaching group to pick our best 22. We lined up against Quinns Districts at

Ballajura and we finally had got one over them winning by 10 points, and passage straight to the

Grand Final with the weeks rest.

Grand Final. Again, this was one of the hardest decisions as a coach to pick only 22 players to

go to battle. The game was against Kingsley who had beaten Ballajura the week before and

was being played at Steel Blue Oval. The game unfortunately was a tale of two halves. Kingsley

got a run on early and dominated the first half only allowing us limited opportunity. The first half

pain only got worse when losing two key players in the first 8 minutes this affected us making

critical rotations on a massive ground and a hot day.

The second half was a lot better the lads decided to awake from their slumber and play football.

They dominated the second half and made it within striking distant. Our poor kicking for goals

and slow start in the first half was just too much in the end and we went down by 22 points. The

pain after the game and the feeling around the whole group players, coaches and helpers was

evident. We were shattered to come so close to that premiership to let it slip through our hands.

This feeling is what will drive all involved next year and the fire in the bell will burn over the

summer.

Appreciation

I take this opportunity to thank the club for the opportunity they gave me to coach this group I

understand it takes some courage to back in a first-time coach and the support they have shown

me over the year has been unbelievable. I would also like to personally thank all those who

have helped me through the year.

Firstly is to the senior coaches Kyle Martin and Dwayne Green – the guidance assistance as

well as encouragement you gave me to start my development to best coach I can be will never

be forgotten. From game day to training you guys have shown me what is required to get a

team over the line and this will guide me for the rest of my coaching career. To my assistant

coach in Nathan Cocks – your cool calm and collected attitude come game day, your help

throughout the season has been fantastic and greatly appreciated. To my team manager in

David Miller – I thank you for the hard work you have put in to make to enable me to focus on

my tasks as coach. To the world’s best runner in Rankin – your commitment to this team is

incredible from your matching runner’s hat and your interchangeable sunnies you are a valuable

member of this team and I have loved working with you throughout the year. Finally, to the E

grade coach Bolts your support and assistance juggling players at short notice for the benefit of

the club to ensure we both had teams on the park and I take this opportunity in congratulating

you and your Team becoming E Grade Premiers for 2017. All of you have been instrumental in

the successful season and I could not have done it without your support and contributions.

Finally, I would like to thank all our hard working committee, members, our very loyal

supporters, all our bar staff, canteen staff, and all the other tireless volunteers that put in the

work to make this great club run. I look forward to what the future holds not just for the reserves

but for all four teams. Bring on 2018.

COLTS COACH’S REPORT – Michael Hnatojko 7th position – 7 wins, 11 losses, 97.34%, 34 players used I have been blessed as a Coach and an Administrator to have many memorable experiences in the AFL world and season 2017 gave me the opportunity to experience first-hand a wonderful club in the Willo Blues. This Club has massive potential to be one of the best in the business and already has a terrific group of proud and passionate people involved at Committee level. I thank them all for the support and the opportunity to coach the Colts. The preseason began slowly in terms of player numbers and thanks largely to the players themselves, we managed to get together a decent sized squad including 22 first year colts at the club. A number of these players were players that hadn’t played footy for a few years so to those guys I say thanks for answering the call and allowing your mates to field a competitive team. While we were all disappointed with our final finishing place in the Competition, we were proud that apart from two games, we were competitive against all teams. Our best form of the year came in the second half of the season once the players settled as a unit and peaked with our away win at Bullcreek with only 20 players followed by our 20 goal Kingsley win where we conceded only 1 goal. Our team was well led by first time skipper Josh Hegarty. Thomas Farrell, Mitchell Steacy and Bailey Hitchcock were the other players in the leadership group. A special acknowledgement also must go to our other co-captain, Matt Steacy, who provided leadership to the group in and around his League commitments. I also need to thank everybody who supported and helped the boys but want to single out first time Assistant Coach, Leighton Douglas, Team Manager Georgina Steacy and Runner Paul Cassidy for their efforts week after week. I sincerely hope that most of this squad play again next season with either the Colts or the Senior squad as it was a talented group of young men. As a colts coach, my prime outcome is to ensure these players enjoy the environment and are then prepared for senior footy. Thanks also to BGC for their terrific sponsorship of the Colts and the individual colts sponsors. Without you it is that much harder for these young men to play the game they love. Thanks also to the rest of the coaching group headed by Kyle Martin – I enjoyed working with you as a team in 2017. Michael Hnatojko Colts Coach

E3 COACH’S REPORT – Tim Boulton 5th position – 8 wins, 8 losses, 127.49%, 52 players used Elimination Final – Willetton 8.6 (54) defeated Ellenbrook 3.6 (24) 1st Semi Final – Willetton 7.6 (48) defeated Ballajura 4.7 (31) Preliminary Final – Willetton 10.5 (65) defeated Warnbro 8.10 (58) Grand Final – Willetton 11.6 (72) defeated Noranda 4.7 (31) Thank you for giving me the opportunity to not just be a part of this great club but entrusting me with being the coach of the thirds team. I put my hand up late into pre-season not prepared for what was going to transpire. It has been an absolute joy. Not many of us thirds boys were there for pre-season but the lads who turned up knew it was going to be a good year. We lost our first game. It was expected as I’d only trained with a few of the boys before and we had a lot of new comers. Not only newcomers but lads who ranged from not playing since junior footy to lads who didn’t know any of the rules to those who didn’t even know how to kick. We started the year 1 loss then got the chocolates on the next 4 occasions. Equalling our last coach Raymond Reveley with whom I can’t say thank you enough. The last few years have been tough but the core group that we have had stayed true to what this club represents. The newbies absolutely shined this year. When you start winning everyone gets up and so most of my middle want up to the 2’s. We lost the next 6. We took our opposition way too lightly especially on wet days (Willo can’t play in the wet). Our depth was through the roof – got to bring in some great clubmen that will stay around for years to come. Club mentality was also changing. Marto has been trying for a few to not just be a part of a team but a club. Our biggest moment was after the loss to Piara Waters. I thought our year was done like the last couple but not my boys – my team took it as a group to, I don’t know what to say, become a team – a family. I’m not going to name names. From here we lived out the fairy tale and got the ‘W’ 7 weeks in a row to win the flag. Thank you to my leadership group, my coaching group, you know who you are. We would not have got here without you. I relied massively on quite a few and I am not thanking you – the team is. Thank you. I do my talking after a few cold ones. I am so excited for next year – for all teams, for the club, this great club. Tim Boulton Thirds Coach

INTEGRATED COACHES REPORT – Keilan Marshall 2017 marked the inaugural season for the Willetton Football Club’s Integrated Team. I was

lucky enough to have the privilege to coach the team in its maiden season. Not only was this

experience greatly rewarding, it was also a beneficial learning curve and a club initiative I would

like to assist in expanding further.

There is a saying ‘Behind every great man there is a great woman’. Imagine how great the

woman must be to keep a team of fully fledged men in line? Thankfully for me and the Footy

Club, one Georgie Stacey fits the bill. Georgie filled the role as the official Team Manager of the

Integrated Team, but she performed roles far beyond her job description. I am greatly

appreciative, and I’m sure all the players would agree, of the effort and time Georgie put in to

get this fantastic initiative up and running. Not only did she tirelessly create a welcoming

environment for all players, she also created several opportunities for the team to experience

once in a life time opportunities. Again, I cannot thank her enough for all her hard work and

perseverance. Georgie really has had the largest hand in the team’s success this season. I

would also like to thank all of the boys (YTB) who came down each training session to assist me

with training. You all made the experience greatly enjoyable. I owe you all a beer or two. It’s

easy to coach a group of players with the amount of support I’ve received from everyone.

Enough thanks and acknowledgments. It’s time to give the people what they want.

The season saw the team play in several Curtain Raiser Events, both at AFL and WAFL level.

Along with this, the players competed in their first official AFL match against Fremantle CBC

(big shout out and thanks to CBC). Led by inspirational captain Geoff, every game the players

wowed the crowds with their footy skills and smarts, displayed their cohesive team work and

their willingness to compete and win the hard ball, putting into play all their diligent hard work

and practise at trainings. There were many highlights throughout the season, whether it was Ali

snapping goals from the slightest of angles every training (the second coming of the

Macedonian Marvel?), Liam becoming exhausted from running half the field celebrating his first

snagger or Tyler gliding down the wing like a gazelle. Personally, I believe the greatest highlight

of the season was every single player’s ability to exhibit an inclusive and team first orientated

mentality.

Again, I would like to thank all the hard work and effort the Club, Georgie and the assistant

coaches put into the season. Most importantly however, thank you to all the players who pulled

on a Willetton Blues football jumper for the Integrated team this season. It’s very rewarding to

coach a group of players who are so enthusiastic and keen be a part of this great football club. I

hope all involved enjoyed themselves as much as I did this season.

Upward and onwards from here. Up the mighty Willetton Blues Integrated Team!

10 Years with BGC

This year we celebrate another milestone – 10 years of sponsorship and support from BGC. The Willetton Football Club have been extremely lucky to have the backing of one of WA’s biggest names in construction. Eric Thomson, and more recently Chris Mainwaring, have been a big part of the Club over the past decade – sponsoring our League team, our playing shorts and currently our Colts team. We are truly grateful for their generosity and we look forward to the next 10 years!
