Wilderness Inquiry

Dear Friends,

We are excited to share that 2017 was Wilderness Inquiry’s best year yet. With

your support, more than 37,000 people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities

joined us on inclusive outdoor adventures. These experiences inspire personal

growth, increase environmental stewardship, and break down barriers between

people.

One participant shared, “Through your inclusive mission, my WI trips have provided

me with a renewed optimism, a greater vision for my life, and a confirmation of the

inherent kindness of others.” - Janet B.

Thank you for making these life-changing experiences possible.

Share the AdventureWilderness Inquiry’s inclusive outdoor experiences connect people to each other and the natural world.

Financial support allows us to provide need-based scholarships to low-income individuals, adaptive

equipment, and support services for people with disabilities. From the Saint Croix River to Florida’s

Everglades, 2,733 individuals of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities shared the adventure with us in 2017.

Gateway to AdventureGateway teaches participants with cognitive and developmental disabilities the skills needed to enjoy

outdoor adventures, helping them integrate into employment and community activities. During activities

such as the kayak wet exit training pictured here, individuals of all abilities work together to solve problems

and build confidence. In 2017, 482 people experienced the world in new ways through Gateway to Adventure.

CanoemobileCanoemobile brings hands-on learning to underserved youth via the “floating classroom” of a 24-foot

Voyageur canoe. Originating in the Twin Cities in 2008, Canoemobile has grown into a nationally-

recognized outdoor program that connects youth to their local public lands and waterways. Canoemobile

helps develop our next generation of environmental stewards, and addresses one of the most pressing

issues of our time—the academic achievement gap. From coast to coast, 32,746 individuals participated

in Canoemobile in 2017.

The National Summer Learning Association awarded

Canoemobile the 2017 New York Life Founder’s Award,

recognizing its outstanding effectiveness in providing

innovative summer education programming for

students in all grade levels.

99

Outdoor Career AcademyBuilding on skills learned through Canoemobile and other programs, Outdoor Career Academy

engages, trains, and credentials underserved youth to prepare them for employment in the

outdoor and environmental industry. In 2017, 96 youth graduated from our multi-day Outdoor

Career Academy. The program changes individual lives, diversifies the outdoor workforce, and

builds environmental stewardship throughout the community.

11

Families Integrating TogetherWilderness Inquiry’s family program makes outdoor adventures accessible for families who have a child or

parent with a disability and wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to travel together. These inclusive outdoor

adventures develop shared values, improve communication skills, and strengthen family relationships. We

provide scholarships and a youth discount to ensure outdoor access for low-income families. In 2017, 1,064

family members joined us in the Apostle Islands, Yellowstone National Park, the Boundary Waters Canoe Area,

and Glacier National Park.

Program Growth, 2012-2017

2017 was Wilderness Inquiry’s best year by every measure. Our programs continue

to grow, serving more people than ever through shared outdoor adventures.

At the same time, we use donor dollars efficiently and received the highest rating from

Charities Review Council for the 7th year—demonstrating our commitment to fiscal

responsibility. We surpass industry standards for efficiency and effectiveness, connecting

more than 37,000 individuals of all abilities and backgrounds to outdoor adventure at an

average cost of less than $100 per person. Our audited financial statements, summarized

Canoemobile creates opportunities for individuals to experience new activities. In this photo,

a San Francisco man is brought to tears as his wife canoes for the first time—something they

never dreamed would be possible. Donor support ensures we have exceptional equipment,

tools, training, staff, and supports to make this possible.

A huge thank you to all of our federal partners for helping to support our efforts

to connect everyone to their public lands. Among the many initiatives, the USDA

Forest Service taught tangible job skills and discussed employment pathways with

underserved youth during multi-day adventures to the Chippewa and Superior

National Forests.

Why buy a table when you can buy a boat? Our “floating gala” once again featured

gourmet treats and wine sourced and served by local food guru and author, Beth

Dooley. Guests leisurely paddled down the Mississippi River while learning about

and supporting Wilderness Inquiry’s programs.

We believe that embracing our public lands is an important part of our national heritage and

we are proud to continue our work with new immigrant youth and families. The young man

pictured here drove a sled dog team in the Boundary Waters and jumped through an ice hole

on West Bearskin Lake. You Betcha!
