As the nation paid tribute to veterans Tuesday, Palestine ISD students learned important lessons in patriotism. Our youngest students at Washington Early Childhood Center were visited by members of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, who demonstrated the correct way to fold the American flag. Northside Primary students paid tribute to all branches of the armed services through song and poetry. Veterans in attendance were presented with student-made thank you cards as 550 Northside students sang “I’m Proud to be an American”. Local veterans were honored with a lunch at the A.M. Story Intermediate campus, and the Story 6th Grade Choir entertained with patriotic songs. At Palestine Junior High, Mr. Rodney Skelton gave his first hand testimony of the hardships veterans faced in the Vietnam War, and Mr. Clyde Fultrell shared his family’s story of his great grandfather who was the youngest drummer boy in the American Revolutionary War. U.S. Army Captain Dale Waldon, a graduate of Palestine High School, spoke to Palestine High Students at the Veterans Day assembly about the origins of Veterans Day, honor, duty, and patriotic service to our country. He reminded everyone of the sacrifices made by so many that have served which have provided us the freedoms that we all enjoy.

What a great tradition at WECC – the Paw Pal Program matches High School Seniors with PreK students. We were introduced to our Paw Pals on Oct 15th, but met again on Friday for the last Pep Rally of the year. WECC students were presented with a button to wear with their Senior Paw Pal picture then they hugged and bubbled into the gym for the Pep Rally. We enjoyed watching the cheerleaders, Kit-Kats, Drum-Line, band and alot of holding ears because it was so …….loud. After the pep rally the seniors found their Paw Pals and then together they watched a video of their Senior Paw Pals memories through their years in PISD. We all had a great time!
Our next big event for our Paw Pals is our Polar Express Day. We all wear pajamas, watch Polar Express, eat popcorn and drink hot chocolate. We can’t wait.

Veteran’s Day was celebrated by our students with the help of Ann Coleman and Evelyn Cupid from the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, WECC gave our respect to the brave men and women who sacrificed to keep our country freedoms safe. Mrs. Coleman and Mrs. Cupid with the help of Thurman Harrell, IV and Isis Gray demonstrated the folding of the American Flag. During the folding, students were told the meaning of each of the 13 folds. At the end of the ceremony WECC students and staff recited the Pledge of Allegiance. Thank you to other veterans in attendance and WECC’s own veterans Holly Foye-West and Gary Parrish.
Thank you to all our Veterans.
