Dan VanHassel is a composer and multi-instrumentalist living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Page 6: Wild Rumpus: Program for Concert #2

Until I was working on HPaZmZg:pZd^gbg`, I began to realize that I have always been composing one kind of music, which presents my understanding and practice on what beauty means in my search of tone colors, harmonies, musical forms and orchestrations. To my understanding, HPaZmZg:pZd^gbg`bl]^Ûgbm^erZghma^kdbg]h_music, and it is a sort of “betray” from my past music thinking. During the composing, I let my musical thoughts expand not extend; I bring in those sounds that take place in my daily life chaos, because they actually mean so much to my real life compared to those “beautiful sounds” in my imagination; through writing this piece, I also happily embraced a different personality of me—rough, wild, formless, bold, _kbohehnlZg]oneg^kZ[e^%ghmma^hg^pahblZepZrlk^Ûg^]%]^eb\Zm^%sophisticated, smooth and well-mannered; and at last I wrote this piece ghmhger_hki^hie^l^Zkl[nmZelh_hkma^bk^r^l'B_Zeema^l^f^ZgmaZmthis piece is made of my real life, then all my past works were made of theatre. But which one is the real me, and which one is the ultimate reality? I asked Buddha about these questions in this piece! … Buddha lZb]&&eb_^blma^Zmk^Zg]ma^Zmk^bleb_^%Zg]lhf^mbf^lp^]hgmdghpZmountain is alive until it erupts. O…What an Awakening!

The music of Yao Chen strikes audiences with its innovative ways of bringing the traditions of Eastern and Western music together and its ih^mb\m^eebg`h_ma^\hfihl^klbgg^kfhlmmahn`aml'<khll&\nemnkZeZg]cross-disciplinary concepts permeate his creative inspiration and com-positional output. He has also received commissions and awards from prestigious organizations such as Radio France, Leonard Bern-stein Foundation, Chicago Art Institute & Silk Road Project, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Beijing Modern Music Festival, Tanglewood and Aspen Music Festival among many others.

He has a B.A. in composition from Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, and Ph.D in composition from the University of Chicago.
