Word from the Rector

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Welcome to the Wider Achievement Awards Ceremony, which is in addition to our traditional Prize Giving and Commemoration Ceremony. This year ceremony will celebrate areas including Sport, Music, Art, Drama and Duke of Edinburgh. This allows us to recognise the exceptional success, dedication, and efforts of our pupils outside of the classroom setting. We are extremely proud of the fact that so many of our young people are competing and achieving at such a high level across so many sports and activities. The dedication and commitment required for this is phenomenal. This evening has been organised so that we can recognise this. We are delighted that Lynne Beattie has agreed to address the gathering this evening and that so many of our Former Pupils, who have achieved success in the Sporting and creative arts world, have been able to attend. I would also like to express my enormous gratitude to the team of staff and pupils who have put in so much hard work, energy and enthusiasm to make this event happen. To organise such an occasion requires a great deal of time, effort and skill. We hope you enjoy the evening. Thank you for your continued support. Viva Schola Regia! Pauline Walker

Biography of Distinguished Guest

Lynne Beattie-Guest Speaker

“When you think of what it takes to be an Olympian, you think of determination, pain, sacrifice, hard work, focus, commitment, and all of us have had to access each and every one

of these qualities to get as far as we have today”

Lynne Beattie is a Volleyball player and competed for Great Britain at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

Lynne started playing volleyball at Mearns Castle High School at the age of 12 and instantly fell in love with the sport. She had strong ambitions to improve as a player and aimed to be selected for Scotland one day. At the age of 16, Lynne joined Glasgow Su Ragazzi Volleyball Club where her passion for volleyball grew, gaining her first senior international cap for Scotland at the age of 17 against England. Little did she know that her English counterparts on that day were soon to become her team mates as part of the Great Britain Women’s volleyball team just 2 years later.

Following the announcement in 2005 that London had won the bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games, Lynne relocated to Sheffield to train full time, in a bid to make the final 12 selected to represent Team GB at London 2012. During this time she played professional volleyball in 5 different European Leagues; Slovenia, Italy, Germany, Spain and Switzerland, an invaluable experience that seen her grow as a player and an individual. In the summer of 2012, Lynne achieved her lifelong ambition of becoming an Olympian, Captaining the Great Britain team in their first ever indoor appearance at an Olympic Games.

Although a trained pharmacist and Strathclyde University graduate, Lynne has more recently been appointed as the East of Scotland Regional Development Officer for volleyball with aspirations of representing Team GB in Rio 2016.

Special thanks go to the musicians and singers for their wonderful performances tonight. The talent on show is exceptional.

Another special thank you goes to the dancers for their performance in tonight’s ceremony. They represent some of the many dance groups that we are proud of in this school. Thanks to Samm Baigrie for encouraging so many pupils to participate in dance.

Thank you to all who have contributed towards this year’s successful extra-curricular programme. We very much appreciate all the hard work and commitment that goes on behind the scenes and the sacrifices you all make. We look forward to next year and even more participation, achievement and success.
