Informational Interview Host #4: Rachel Schendler, Transplant Social Worker, Penn Medicine Heart and Vascular

Externship Description: This experience would consist of an informational interview for a student who was interested in

learning more about social work specifically medical social work. Students should attend this informational interview

with 4-7 questions about Rachel and her work. Due to the sensitive and confidential nature of Rachel’s work students

will not be able to shadow her inside of the medical facility.

Externship Description: While there are some limitations regarding proprietary information that I will be unable to share

with any student who would like to come to SEL, they can observe my daily practices and my interactions with my

subject matter experts and interact with them themselves, and they will have the opportunity to meet and interact with

my peer who joined a little over a year ago. The student will also learn about the software I use, information flow and

control, schedule management, edit implementation, content review, and team dynamics. I will also show the student

the products we manage and the related software programs that are developed wholly by SEL between collaborating

country-wide teams. The student might also have the chance to attend any meetings that occur during their externship.

I will also acquaint the student with the origin and history of the company.

Widener University Alumnus and Former Communication Studies Major

Externship Description: This externship will provide you with an opportunity to shadow a newscast producer. See what

it’s like behind the scenes of the CBS affiliate in the 43rd market of the United States. Meet and interact with people who

work in front of the camera and behind it. Externs will take empty slate and create a newscast during this shadow

experience. During said newscast you could sit in the control room or in the studio. You will experience putting together

at least 2-3 shows in one day!

as event set-up, take down, coordination, communication etc. Student should have a strong desire to work in the fields

Externship Description: A student will see firsthand what a municipal government manager does on a daily basis. As a

smaller municipality, the municipal manager has several responsibilities, including zoning, code enforcement and human

Externship Description: As Assistant Director of Scientific Review and Grants Administration, I oversee AACR's non-SU2C

Grants Program, which encompasses a multi-million dollar portfolio of industry- and foundation-sponsored grants for

cancer scientists at all career stages.

During the externship, I hope to provide some relevant information and experience regarding the types of job

opportunities available to scientists outside of academia. My goal will be to provide the student(s) with an

understanding of what a scientist can do outside of the lab, if they choose to move in that direction, and open their

minds up to the possibilities of “alternative” careers in science.

Externship Description: Externs will be introduced to the world of ambient air monitoring. How an air monitoring

network is designed and operates will be discussed. Externs will have an opportunity to have hands on experience

working with air quality monitors. Externs will also learn how data is used for developing State Implementation Plans

and meeting the USEPA’s Ambient Air Quality Standards.

Externship Description: During previous externships, students did the software engineering to design a product, built

and established some code, published it to github/bitbucket repository, purchased a domain name, and implemented

the product as a temporary site. Students configured the students own laptops with all of the software necessary to

build a working website.

Basically students will occupy a role in a one week only front-to-back startup.

Technologies utilized: Laravel (PHP), git, composer, sqlite (if time permits SQL server), Bootstrap & jQuery for front-end,

Externship Description: My position as Support Manager/Project Specialist may provide some insight to daily workflow

process in the support area of IT, as well as some knowledge of how IT personnel interact with other business units of

the company in order to facilitate beneficial services and procedures for company staff. Day to day tasks that could be

observed may include support handling procedures, a view of varieties of different services/platforms that get

supported, and possibly end-user training or interactions/meetings with users from other areas of business.
