Externship Description: Externs may have the opportunity to view myself and my co-workers strategize about the best

ways in which we can plan and promote on and off campus alumni events. Students might also have the opportunity to

observe us interacting with alumni, students, and fellow colleagues. Alumni Engagement is an interesting career because

every day is different and you interact with a number of different constituents.

Current Doctoral Candidate in Widener University’s Higher Education Leadership Program

Externship Description: Students will be able to learn how an international student services and study abroad office

functions at a university. Students will gain cross-cultural competency skills.

Externship Host #3: Nicole Crossey, Law Student, Drexel University

Widener University Alumnus and Former History, Political Science, and International Relations Major

Externship Description: Students will have the opportunity to attend upper-level classes, tour the campus, learn about

what law school is like for a first-year student, and meet current students.

Location: Philadelphia, PA

Length of Externship: 1 day

Informational Interview Host #4: Rachel Schendler, Transplant Social Worker, Penn Medicine Heart and Vascular

Center

Widener University Alumnus and Former Sociology Major

Externship Description: This experience would consist of an informational interview for a student who was interested in

learning more about social work specifically medical social work. Students should attend this informational interview

with 4-7 questions about Rachel and her work. Due to the sensitive and confidential nature of Rachel’s work students

will not be able to shadow her inside of the medical facility.

Externship Host #5: Allison (Ally) Roelofs, Editor, Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, INC

Widener University Alumnus and Former English Major

Externship Description: While there are some limitations regarding proprietary information that I will be unable to share

with any student who would like to come to SEL, they can observe my daily practices and my interactions with my

subject matter experts and interact with them themselves, and they will have the opportunity to meet and interact with

my peer who joined a little over a year ago. The student will also learn about the software I use, information flow and

control, schedule management, edit implementation, content review, and team dynamics. I will also show the student

the products we manage and the related software programs that are developed wholly by SEL between collaborating

country-wide teams. The student might also have the chance to attend any meetings that occur during their externship.

I will also acquaint the student with the origin and history of the company.

Externship Host #6: Joann Kline, Television Producer, CBS21 WHP-TV

Widener University Alumnus and Former Communication Studies Major

Externship Description: This externship will provide you with an opportunity to shadow a newscast producer. See what

it’s like behind the scenes of the CBS affiliate in the 43rd market of the United States. Meet and interact with people who

work in front of the camera and behind it. Externs will take empty slate and create a newscast during this shadow

experience. During said newscast you could sit in the control room or in the studio. You will experience putting together

at least 2-3 shows in one day!

Externship Host #7: Hunter Tower, Executive Director, Republican Committee of Lancaster County

Widener University Alumnus and Former Political Science Major

Externship Description: This externship will provide you with an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of the political

arena through interacting with elected officials and committee members.

Externship Host #8: Stephen J. Barron, Jr., Director of Fiscal Affairs, Northampton County


Externship Description: County government is very diverse. This externship will provide students with the ability to see

how government works and the checks and balances over local government. Additionally students will see what it is like

working in financial management within the public sector.

Externship Host #9: Julia Lo Ehrhardt, Community Outreach Manager, Tyler Arboretum

Friend of Widener University

Externship Description: Student will be working with our Special Events department staff and will learn about tasks such

as event set-up, take down, coordination, communication etc. Student should have a strong desire to work in the fields

of events management, tourism and hospitality, or customer service. Students should be ready and willing to move

furniture, complete light cleaning, complete basic write-ups, and have a positive and upbeat personality.

Externship Description: Students will be working with our horticulture department in winter time tasks which may

include but not limited to: brush clearing, snow operations, hand pruning, mulching and invasive plant control. Students

must be ready and willing to work outside. Must be able to report in by 8am and finish by 3:30pm.

Externship Description: Students will have the opportunity to shadow multiple Recruiters and Recruiting Assistants.

Student extern should have an interest in working in human resources or recruiting.

Externship Host #12: Chris Heleniak, Township Manager, Skippack Township


Externship Description: A student will see firsthand what a municipal government manager does on a daily basis. As a

smaller municipality, the municipal manager has several responsibilities, including zoning, code enforcement and human

resources. The student will have the opportunity to observe a wide range of municipal government functions.

Externship Host #13: Autumn Heisler, Staff Writer, LRP Publications


Externship Description: The extern will work with the Risk & Insurance magazine group during their visit. The extern will

learn about the digital and print process of working for a magazine and the editorial process, from assigning articles to

getting the text ready for publication. They will likely gain hands-on experience with writing and may even gain a byline

for an online article.

Externship Description: We like to expose the student(s) to the various ways digital media impacts our organization –

from news stories, to entertainment, to providing data to determine whether we increasing visitors to our site, which

we then have the opportunity to transfer to members.

Externship Host #16: Kaitlin Schnalzer, PT, DPT, Encore Rehab at Fair Acres Geriatric Center

Widener University Alumnus and Former Psychology Pre-PT Major

Externship Description: Student will see work with the geriatric population in a long term and short term care setting,

experience a variety of neuromuscular/musculoskeletal/cardiopulmonary/wound residents, and work on WC

positioning, bed positioning, wounds, and functional tasks (transfers, balance, gait training) in a high-volume

environment.

Widener University Alumnus

Externship Description: As Assistant Director of Scientific Review and Grants Administration, I oversee AACR's non-SU2C

Grants Program, which encompasses a multi-million dollar portfolio of industry- and foundation-sponsored grants for

cancer scientists at all career stages.

During the externship, I hope to provide some relevant information and experience regarding the types of job

opportunities available to scientists outside of academia. My goal will be to provide the student(s) with an

understanding of what a scientist can do outside of the lab, if they choose to move in that direction, and open their

minds up to the possibilities of “alternative” careers in science.

Externship Host #19: Charles Sarnoski, State of Delaware DNREC, Division of Air Quality


Externship Description: Externs will be introduced to the world of ambient air monitoring. How an air monitoring

network is designed and operates will be discussed. Externs will have an opportunity to have hands on experience

working with air quality monitors. Externs will also learn how data is used for developing State Implementation Plans

and meeting the USEPA’s Ambient Air Quality Standards.

Externship Description: Opportunity to visit and tour the medical school, find out about medical student life, learn

Externship Description: I will be performing various experiments that are typical in a research lab. My lab is specifically

in interested in ovarian cancer, metabolism, senescence, and epigenetics - all of which I currently study. Primarily, the

student will experience what a normal day for a PhD student in biomedical science is like.

Externship Host #22: Dan Marcellus and Alyssa Coffey, Life Cycle Engineering


Externship Description: During previous externships, students did the software engineering to design a product, built

and established some code, published it to github/bitbucket repository, purchased a domain name, and implemented

the product as a temporary site. Students configured the students own laptops with all of the software necessary to

build a working website.

Basically students will occupy a role in a one week only front-to-back startup.

Technologies utilized: Laravel (PHP), git, composer, sqlite (if time permits SQL server), Bootstrap & jQuery for front-end,

hosted on IIS.

Externship Description: Learn about the life of a medical student at Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine!

Students will learn how to study as a medical student and types of material covered. There will be some quiet learning

time. Students might have the opportunity to see an OMM lab or a primary skills lab.

Widener University Alumnus former Computer and Information Systems Major

Externship Description: My position as Support Manager/Project Specialist may provide some insight to daily workflow

process in the support area of IT, as well as some knowledge of how IT personnel interact with other business units of

the company in order to facilitate beneficial services and procedures for company staff. Day to day tasks that could be

observed may include support handling procedures, a view of varieties of different services/platforms that get

supported, and possibly end-user training or interactions/meetings with users from other areas of business.
