IntroductionRarely do we attempt to list every solvent printer by brand and by booth. To do this requires so much time, which implies the cost of bringing a person to the expo just to handle solvent printers. We tend to focus more on UV-cured printers, since that is where you see the TRENDs.

But gradually we are working at catching up with solvent printers. In past years we have made lists of all solvent printers at D-PES and Shanghai expos. That is a mammoth undertaking because there are so many brands and models, not to mention the same physical printer appearing under many names.

This is the other reason why we have not tended to make lists of all solvent printers: too often there is no easy way to figure out what is the original brand name and model. Most solvent printers are re-branded by their distributors.

Twelve years ago there were primarily water-based printers in the booth of HP, Canon, Epson (and Encad-Kodak). Today there are so few true water-based printers that a separate PDF is not needed to cover them. So for the present PDF we include all inks other than UV-cured. There is a separate FLAAR Report on UV-cured printers (at Sign Istanbul 2012) and a separate FLAAR Report on textile printers.


I always assumed that the HP Designjet 5000 and HP 5500 were the best selling wide-format printer of all time. But I am now learning that the HP 500 and HP 800 may have sold even more. The total number of HP Designjet water-based printers is quite impressive.

Today water-based printers are only a fraction of HP’s offerings.

An ink company, at SGIA and at drupa 2012, exhibited a Roland and a Chinese DX printhead machine with what the ink company claimed was latex ink. We do not accept any ink as “latex” or “resin” unless the printer has a sophisticated special curing unit.

The ink company was at Sign Istanbul but did not have any mention of their so-called latex ink, so we can continue to skip it.

There was no Sepiax ink, nor any evidence of a Sepiax printer at Sign Istanbul.

Whenever I visit an ink R&D lab, out of curiosity I ask the ink chemists how they classify the latex ink of HP. Ink chemists consider it “a solvent ink which is water tolerable.” In lay person’s terms: a solvent ink which also has some water in it.

If you look at water-based ink for Mutoh, and read the REACH and MSDS, you will find a lot of chemicals that make you think twice before wanting to crow that “latex ink is water based.” Since even water-based inks have solvents in them. But yes, the solvents in water-based inks and latex ink are not as carginogenic as full-solvent inks. But it is misleading to call latex ink water-based, and misleading to name the solvents as “co-solvents.” But I do admit HP is very very clever in their wordsmithing.

HP latex ink has many benefits (it is dry out of the printer since the curing unit is like a nuclear reactor). So you can laminate a latex print immediately. You can’t laminate a solvent print quickly (you have to wait for it to out-gas).

We have the sales figures for HP latex ink printers but as a courtesy to not print them.

One of the HP latex ink printers on display was the really old model HP Designjet L65500; it looked its age and the surface of the chassis showed scrapes and bruises of a printer that had been moved around a lot.

It has taken Mimaki some time to get their latex ink printers fully functional. They had to engineer a complete new damper system. The downside of all of this is the increased price. If you go on-line to any of the sign association web sites, the most frequently complaint about the Mimaki printer is its higher price as compared with HP. HP makes much of its profit from printhead replacement and from ink. Mimaki’s printheads will last longer so they will not get much immediate income from printhead replacement.

What will be helpful is to find a printshop which started with an HP latex printer and switched to a Mimaki latex printer (or vice versa). But either way, the only way to produce a realistic evaluation of the Mimaki latex printer is to visit a printshop which is using one out in the real world.

ALLWIN. Plate says Allwin Konica. Operator said model was K3208. Interesting that the manufacturer’s plate was inaccurate but often the model is stamped not printed. It is illegible to attempt to read it if stamped; too crude, too small a letter.

Names for the models in the brochure are totally different.

Heads are Konica 512, 14 to 42 picoliter. Ink from Nutec (South Africa); $40 a liter (which is not cheap for solvent ink). Price was about $25,000. Most prices were given in dollars, not in Euros. But perhaps because I am from USA they told me price in dollars.

The booth was in Hall 9; there were no other printers in Hall 9.
