WICHITA PUBLIC SCHOOLS The Stucky Storm Watch · Hello from the Library. Mary Sumner, (316)...

Our school is committed to providing a safe and encouraging place for your child. Please help us continue to make improvements to our school by completing a short online survey. Students in grades 3–12 and all staff at every school in the district are participating in the Safe & Civil Schools Climate & Safety Survey. We want to know what you think, too. All responses are anonymous. The resulting data will allow us to see if the three groups—parents/guardians, students, and staff—agree or disagree about important issues. We will be able to identify what we are doing well and what we need to work on, such as safety in a particular location of the school, students’ understanding of the expectations for behavior, or communication with families. It’s quick and easy! The survey should take less than 10 minutes to complete. It’s available online, 24 hours a day for eight weeks—September 6 – October 30. You can complete it on any computer with Internet access—at home, work, the public library, or during parent conferences on September 26 & 28 in the library. (Cellular connections do not work well, but tablets and phones with WIFI will work.) Just one parent or guardian from each household should take it. You can choose to read the survey in English or Spanish. Examples of questions are: Are staff members supportive of students? Are families informed about the rules and expectations for student behavior? Are student cliques a problem at this school? Here’s how! The survey is available from Tuesday, September 6 - Sunday, October 30. Thank you! If you have any questions about the survey, please feel free to call the school office at (316) 973-8400. 6th Grade News Mathematics

In 6th grade math we are

working with Factors and

Multiples. They are of tre-

mendous use when work-

ing with multiplication, divi-

sion, fractions, and money,

in addition to other real-

world situations.

Example:

½ hour is 30 minutes

because 30 min x 2

equals 60 minutes.

2 and 30 are factors of

60.

And 60 is a multiple of

2 and 30.

Take a few minutes to ask

your 6th grader about the

following vocabulary terms

because talking about math

outside of the math class

increases math fluency,

number sense and confi-

dence!

Factor, multiple, prime

number, composite num-

ber, factor pair, square

number. See pictures below

of Ms. Hong’s students

playing the factor game.

Social Studies

Social Studies students be-

gan the year with a short

unit on Archeology. We

learned about artifacts, why

we study history, and the

importance of working to-

gether. We will dive into

our first ancient Civiliza-

tion, Mesopotamia, in mid-

September.

Science

Sixth grade science stu-

dents are learning to meas-

ure with non-traditional

measuring devices, which

will help them to learn why

standard measuring devices

are so important.

Pictured below are Luke

Riley and Macameron

Speckhardt measuring with

a pencil and Cameron

Howell and Terrance

Weaver measuring with a

paper clip.

Sixth graders in Mrs. Over-

stake’s class are studying

inventors, scientists, mathe-

maticians and engineers.

They then complete a Spud

project showing what they

have learned about these

people. Calik Tucker

(below right) and Niasia

Goodwin (at left) present

their Spud projects in the

pictures below. Beulah

Henry, nicknamed “Lady

Edison” because of her

many inventions was Nia-

sia's person of interest.

Language Arts

In Language Arts we are

symbolizing important as-

pects of our lives through

the creation of personal

mandalas and writing auto-

biographical essays. This

leads directly into our rela-

tionship unit.

In Enrichment classes we

are working through a Pos-

sible Selves Unit where we

examine our future goals,

hopes, and expectations.

Language Arts

7th grade language arts classes

will soon finish reading The

Giver by Lois Lowry. Students

have been discussing the idea of

perception and will write an

essay about how their own

perceptions have changed

throughout the

school year. The

end of the unit

assessment is to

create their own

utopia and present

them in class.

This will be a

group project.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, students are

learning the foundational skills

and concepts necessary to think

like a geographer. This includes

cardinal directions, continents,

map skills and landforms. Mr.

Tyner’s and Ms. Parnacott’s

students competed to see who

knew their cardinal directions

best. Students went head to

head in a race to reach the cor-

rect cone for the direction Mr.

Tyner called out. Both classes

did a great job!

Additionally, September 17th is

Constitution Day. Please ask

your student if they have

checked out the Constitution

Day Challenge bulletin board

outside of the 7th grade pod.

Tier 2 Literacy is an exciting

curriculum at Stucky. We are

using morphemes (meaningful

word parts) to learn complex

academic terms and then read-

ing expository texts such as

“What is the Purpose of

School?” We are discovering

how to utilize these terms in

discussions and writing. All

three grade levels are partici-

pating in this curriculum to

strengthen reading and writing

skills.

Maze prac-

tices his

8th Grade News Science

In September we will rein-

force classroom rules and

procedures in order to be

safe in our science labs. We

will do that as we also learn

about energy and waves.

We will study energy’s be-

havior when transferred

and conserved. We will end

the month learning about

waves and light and all the

crazy things they can do.

Ask your students about

lab safety and the projects

we begin this month.

Language Arts

Language Arts classes have

been learning about rela-

tionships with the people

closest to us. Our focus

for the remainder of Sep-

tember will be about how

we interact with our sib-

lings and the adults that

care for us. It has been

interesting to learn how

much of an impact close

relationships have on our

lives.

Enrichment class students

have been learning the pit-

falls of social media and the

role it can play in bully-

ing. We’ve looked at sev-

eral media examples and in

groups, students have

talked about the role social

media plays in their own

lives. We are learning to

use social media as a tool,

instead of a toy.

In addition to all those

things, Language Arts clas-

ses are diving deeper into

technology in the class-

room. Students are using

computers to retrieve as-

signments and turn in

work. Outside of school

hours they are able to use

their phones to download

work or pick up missing

assignments. The picture

below left is Mrs. Causey’s

honors class working on an

assignment downloaded

from Edmodo, a school app

that looks like Facebook.

Social Studies

Could you survive on your

own in a new place? In an

unknown land with

strangers watching your

every move?

This is exactly what the

settlers of Colonial Ameri-

ca faced as they escaped

religious persecution. They

had to start a new life in a

new place! Our students

are learning about the early

English settlements, includ-

ing lost colonies’ mysteri-

ous disappearances, disease

and famine.

Also, September 17 is Con-

stitution Day. 8th grade his-

tory classes will be learning

about the Bill of Rights and

how it specifically applies

their rights while in middle

school.

Math

Welcome back to

school! 8th grade math stu-

dents have started explor-

ing exponents at a more

complex level than in their

earlier math classes. They

will next learn about equa-

tions. 8th grade Algebra

students have started work

on graphs and will then

learn about functions.
