Wiccan Rede – Self Explained

Bide the Wiccan Laws we must

In Perfect Love and Perfect Trust...

-I think this part means that a Wiccan must hold in high regard their laws with a perfected

Trust and Love; to me that is when each person in a coven of witches understands what

Love & Trust means to each other and that they all work together at perfecting those

important emotions.

Live and let live,

Fairly take and fairly give.

Cast the Circle thrice about

To keep the evil spirits out.

- When you live & let life be; When you take fairly from what's available and give in like manner to the

coven, community, or life as a whole. I think that to cast the Circle thrice about means to circle around

yourself in a sphere and threshold type manner. That is to circle once around above your head & below

your feet, once around at arms level (making the sphere) and once around on the ground you stand

(making your threshold); thus keeping the unwanted away in the most hermetic way I can think of.

To bind the spell every timeLet the spell be spake in rhyme.

Soft of eye and light of touch,

Speak but little, listen much.

- To me this says that in order to make the spell work you are to rhyme the words somehow but with an

easy grip on your words and with few or simple words at that, also that you should listen with your

minds eye, your heart, and all other senses that apply to what it is you're requesting.

Deosil go by waxing moon,

Chanting out the Witches' Rune.

Widdershins go by waning moon,

Chanting out the baneful rune.

- This part seems to me to mean that as the moon grows fuller a wiccan should work on attuning

themselves with the elements of the craft (in part by actually chanting out the Rune). And by the

Waning moon chanting out the darker baneful rune; curses, etc. By this I take it to mean that one should

grow their craft in tune with nature and the cycles therein, and that one should also work on waning the

baneful aspects of ones feelings; temper their anger or frustration.

When the Lady's moon is new,

Kiss thy hand to Her, times two.

When the moon rides at her peak,

Then your heart's desire seek.

- Here it seems that a person should think of the goddess and what their heart desires as the moon

grows full, and at full moon (esbat) celebrate and speak, of spell your hearts desire out.

Heed the North wind's mighty gale,

Lock the door and drop the sail.

When the wind comes from the South,

Love will kiss thee on the mouth.

- Heed the cold, neither let it in, nor let it be your drive and when the air is warm open up and embrace

it. That's how it comes across to me and I guess the air could represent many things aside from the

obvious, like feelings about a place, person, etc.

When the wind blows from the West,

Departed souls will have no rest.

When the wind blows from the East,

Expect the new and set the feast.

- Again the air to me seems to represent what I would be taking in and the west wind

blowing says that those who've taken off will have no rest so when the west wind blows,

don't let it blow you away. The eastern wind is very rare where I live & so Is meeting

someone new (pagan anyway) so that would be cause for celebration.

Nine woods in the cauldron go,

Burn them fast and burn them slow.

Elder be the Lady's tree,

Burn it not or cursed you'll be.

- This is something that I only see as literal.

When the Wheel begins to turn,

Let the Bealtaine fires burn.

When the Wheel has turned to Yule,

Light the log, the Horned One rules.

- To me it seems this represents whom and at what time of year I should look to for guidance. In the

summer and the fall, The Goddess; In the winter and up to Beltaine, The God.

Heed ye Flower, Bush and Tree,

By the Lady, Blessed Be.

Where the rippling waters go,

Cast a stone and truth you'll know.

- Listen to nature and bond with her, and when you come cross the beauty of your attraction and the

elements thereof are present, cast a spell, or rune, or an actual stone across the waters and find higher

understanding. True truth.

When ye have a true need,

Hearken not to others' greed.

With a fool no season spend,

Lest ye be counted as his friend.

- This says to me that I shouldn't let my needs be taken advantage of by a person who only sees the

worth of my desperation. When you realize that your around foolish people or a different type of

person don't spend too much time with them there, move on.

Merry Meet and Merry Part,

Bright the cheeks and warm the heart.

Mind the Threefold Law you should,

Three times bad and three times good.

- Have great times with those you meet and develop even better ones to come. Keep in mind the Law of

Three, what you give comes back to you thrice as strong.

When misfortune is endow,

Wear the blue star on thy brow.

True in Love ever be,

Lest thy lover's false to thee.

- To me this says that when I'm down, or depressed I should just face it and be honest about my

feelings. Keep your love close to your heart and be ever true to your union, lest your lover break

important pacts and then you should move on.

Eight words the Wiccan Rede fulfill:

An' it harm none, Do what ye will.

Blessed Be to thee.

- As long as what you will to do brings no one, not even yourself, harm, then do what you will.

Charged vows of Wiccan will I guess.
