17Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct™: Connect with the Possibilities

Wi-Fi is the best choice for task-oriented dynamic connection of device groups

• Wi-Fi Direct certification brings the compelling combination of ubiquity, no-

wires convenience, performance, and proven technology

• More than 700 million people use Wi-Fi today – it is one of the best-known,

best-loved technologies in the world

• The technology underlying Wi-Fi Direct works with hundreds of millions of

legacy Wi-Fi CERTIFIED products in use today (802.11 a/g/n)

• Wi-Fi Direct brings typical Wi-Fi speed and range

• Easy configuration with Wi-Fi Protected Setup™ and WPA2 security

• Connects to IP-based home network devices

• Leverages standards-based power saving and QoS mechanisms

18Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct™: Connect with the Possibilities

How the technology behind Wi-Fi Direct works:All devices support one-to-one configuration

• This configuration will be very common

• Allows consumer devices to connect directly to one another to

exchange content or share applications

• Print pictures directly from a camera

• Synch contacts from phone to PC

• Play a video game on two devices

• Display pictures from a phone to a television

Page 19: 'Wi-Fi Direct' Media Presentation

19Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct™: Connect with the Possibilities

How the technology behind Wi-Fi Direct works:All devices include Wi-Fi Protected Setup

• Formation of a Wi-Fi Direct connection requires active agreement: one device

must request access, and the other device grants permission

• Wi-Fi Direct connections are formed using mechanisms specified in Wi-Fi

Protected Setup. A connection process might look like this:

1. Press the push-button on Device 1 (e.g. handset or camera)

2. A window pops up on Device 2 indicating that Device 1 is trying to connect and asking

for permission to connect

3. Once acknowledgement is provided, a security-protected

connection is established

• As with traditional Wi-Fi networks, users should only

connect with trusted devices/people

Page 20: 'Wi-Fi Direct' Media Presentation

20Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct™: Connect with the Possibilities

How the technology behind Wi-Fi Direct works: All Wi-Fi Direct devices include WPA2 security

• Active Agreement: Connecting Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices requires active

agreement: one device must request access, and device controlling the group

grants permission

• Partition helps ensure security:

– Enterprise environment (access to printer w/o network); home (let your kid’s hacker

friend connect directly for gaming rather than full access)

– When cross connected to a traditional network, Wi-Fi Direct groups operate in an

independent security domain

• All Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices support WPA2 security protections. Only

authorized devices are permitted to connect, and transmissions over the air are

encrypted using government-grade AES (Advanced Encryption Standard)

Page 21: 'Wi-Fi Direct' Media Presentation

21Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct™: Connect with the Possibilities

How the technology behind Wi-Fi Direct works:All devices support power saving mechanisms

• Efficient use of power is critical for portable battery-operated devices

• All Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices implement power management mechanisms to

reduce power consumption while preserving discovery capabilities

– Includes adaptations of existing Wi-Fi power save mechanisms

– Adds two new mechanisms that enable power savings for active groups:

• Opportunistic power save

• Notice of absence

Page 22: 'Wi-Fi Direct' Media Presentation

22Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct™: Connect with the Possibilities

How the technology behind Wi-Fi Direct works:Some devices support one-to-many configuration

• This configuration enables

multiple devices to connect and

replaces numerous cables on a

single technology

• Many devices connect at once

• Printer

• Speakers

• Monitor

• Camera

• Examples: Multi-player gaming;

Sharing images/presentation with a group

• This is an optional feature; not all Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices can

connect to multiple other devices

Page 23: 'Wi-Fi Direct' Media Presentation

23Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct™: Connect with the Possibilities

How the technology behind Wi-Fi Direct works:Some devices include concurrent connection

• Devices can link directly to a group

of Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices,

but can also share a network connection

with the group

• Two separate security domains are in

place. The group security domain is

set up via Wi-Fi Protected Setup,

and the WLAN security domain may be

set up with Wi-Fi Protected Setup

(consumer networks) or other mechanism (enterprise environments)

• Management features defined in the underlying specification can enable IT

managers to prevent this type of cross-connection

• This is an optional feature; not all Wi-Fi Direct devices can support

simultaneous WLAN connection

Page 24: 'Wi-Fi Direct' Media Presentation

24Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Wi-Fi Direct™: Connect with the Possibilities

How the technology behind Wi-Fi Direct works:Devices in managed environments

• The technology behind Wi-Fi Direct operates in an independent security domain

when one device is also connected to a traditional Wi-Fi network. This prevents

unauthorized devices from accessing the network.

• Efficiency – Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices do not use .11b rates to maximize

available bandwidth

• Visibility – All Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices advertise their presence and settings

• AP Management – APs can be enabled to communicate acceptable policies and

disconnect any Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices that do not comply from the

infrastructure network

• Optional – Wi-Fi Direct-certified devices with optional mechanisms can support

management of the environment by signaling coexistence, channel and power

information to the AP
