Why Leaders Fail

Page 2: why leader fail

Leadership is the most commonly used word when it comes down to the success of an organization, product, group or team. No matter how you slice the success pie, the success pieces all boil down

to leadership. People thrive on learning about leadership, the fact that John Maxwell has sold over 19 million books is a clear indication of such.

There are many reasons that contribute to the success of a leader and just as many reasons for

why they fail. I am a firm believer that you can learn as much from your failures and working

around poor leadership as you can be a successful leader. Why do leaders FAIL? Below is a

list of 9 memorable signs leaders FAIL in an easy to remember acronym FAIL.

Page 4: why leader fail

Fail # 1 : Fake A leader who attempts to be someone they’re not instead of simply being themselves will always have a difficult time succeeding, at some point it just catches up to them. In other-words when the big boss comes around they put their fake-face on. Not to say a leader might not make some adjustments when “company” comes around; however the super-fake-face comes from insecurity of their true self.

Remember: Don’t be fake, be yourself.

“Do You! It’s A Statement… Not

A Question!” Fake Leaders Fail!

Fail # 2 : Attitude One of the primary reasons that a leader fails is because of a poor, negative or a no-can-do

attitude. If a leader thinks he can fly and has a positive can-do attitude; even though they may not be able to fly they will come close. The reason why attitude is important is because that leader’s attitude will rub off on their team members and their followers.

Remember: “Attitude reflects leadership, Captain.” ~Julius

in Remember The Titans The outward negative attitude is generally a sign of internal

struggles, challenges or insecurities. Leaders with

Bad Attitudes Fail!

Fail # 3 : Integrity If a leader doesn’t exhibit a high degree of integrity they will fail. The integrity issues will either

catch up to them (what’s done in the dark, will come to light) or those that follow them won’t

respect them. If team members or followers don’t respect the a leader, it puts the leader in

the place of pushing a snowball up hill… it’s a difficult task.

Remember: Integrity is doing the right thing, even when nobody is watching. Unfortunately, it demonstrates that leadership failures can leave a trail of

wounded followers behind. Leaders who Lack of Integrity Fail!

Fail # 4 : Lacking Although everyone has potential for some degree of leadership in them; the bottom line is that

some leaders fail because they are either: a.) Not the leader they think they are, or b.) Promoted

above their leadership capacity/leadership role has outgrown them, or c.) Not a visionary, or d.) Not a leader at all! They are lacking what it takes!

Page 11: why leader fail

Remember: Just because someone has an office, role, title or responsibility doesn’t mean they are a leader. Leadership is an art, a skill, a craft, a gift… and it must be

developed! A leader must have the ability to inspire people to do more, be more and go farther. If a leader lacks genuine followers or lacks what it takes to be a leader,

they aren’t leading, they are simply going on a walk. They FAIL!

Fail # 5 : A Shift in Focus Leaders are usually distinguished by their ability to "think big." But when their focus shifts, they suddenly start thinking small. They micro manage, they get caught up in details better left to

others, they become consumed with the trivial and unimportant. And to make matters worse, this tendency can be exacerbated by an inclination toward perfectionism.

Page 13: why leader fail

A more subtle leadership derailer is an obsession with "doing" rather than "becoming.“ It is possible for a leader to become too action oriented and, in the

process, lose touch with the more important development of self. Leaders who have a Shift in Focus Fail!

Fail # 6 : Poor Communication A lack of focus and its resulting disorientation typically lead to poor communication. Followers

can't possibly understand a leader's intent when the leader him- or herself isn't sure what it is!

And when leaders are unclear about their own purpose, they often hide their confusion and uncertainty in ambiguous communication.

Page 15: why leader fail

"Say what you mean, and mean what you say" is timeless advice, but it must be preceded by knowing what you mean! An underlying clarity of purpose is the starting

point for all effective communication. It's only when you're absolutely clear about what you want to convey that the hard work of communicating pays

dividends. Leaders who Communicate Poorly FAIL!

Fail # 7 : Risk Aversion Leaders at risk often begin to be driven by a fear of failure rather than the desire to succeed. Past successes create pressure for leaders: "Will I be able to sustain outstanding performance?" "What will I do for an encore?" In fact, the longer a leader is successful, the higher his or her perceived cost of failure.

Page 17: why leader fail

Are you still taking reasonable risks? Prudent leadership never takes reckless chances that risk the destruction of what has been achieved, but neither is it

paralyzed by fear. Often the dance of leadership is two steps forward, one step back. Leaders who are Unable to Take Reasonable Risks FAIL!

Fail # 8 : Poor Self Management Leaders who fail to take care of their physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs

are headed for disaster. Clear your schedule and take care of yourself—it's absolutely vital to

your leadership that you continue to grow and develop, a task that can be accomplished only when your tanks are full.

Page 19: why leader fail

Tragically, if a leader doesn't take care of him- or herself, no one else will. Unless a leader is blessed to be surrounded by more-sensitive-than-normal followers, nobody will pick up on the signs of fatigue and stress. Leaders are often perceived to be superhuman, running

on unlimited energy. Leaders who Don’t Take Care of Themselves FAIL!

Page 20: why leader fail

Fail # 9 : Lost Love The last warning sign of impending disaster that leaders need to heed is a move away from their

first love and dream. Paradoxically, the hard work of leadership should be fulfilling and even fun. But when leaders lose sight of the dream that compelled them to accept the responsibility of

leadership, they can find themselves working for causes that mean little to them.

Page 21: why leader fail

The leaders must stick to what they love, what motivated them at the first, to maintain the fulfillment of leadership. To make sure that you stay on the track of following your first

love, frequently ask y these three questions: Why did I initially assume leadership? Have those reasons changed? Do I still want to lead? The leaders who Lose Sight of Dream FAIL!

As you consider these 9 signs of leadership failure, don't be afraid to take an honest look

at yourself. If any of the warnings ring true, take action today! The good news is: by paying

attention to these signs and heeding their warnings, you can avoid disaster and sustain the kind of leadership that is healthy and fulfilling for both yourself and your followers.

The warning signs in life are there for our good. They protect us from disaster, and

we would be foolish to ignore them.
