Celebs are donning the sewing kit staple with serious style purpose. We tell you why this, why now
“The ’90s continue to resurface in fashion, and safety pins are just another nod to that era’s grunge movement,” says stylist Hema Persad, who has dressed models like Gigi Hadid and Emily Ratajkowski. But the pins today, when worn as clothing embellishments, are less haphazard and make a much more chic statement. “Their symmetrical placement ensures they look artful and intentional rather than like a tailoring session gone wrong,” adds Persad. Plus, vertical lines of pins, like the ones going down Ruth’s Rodarte pants or Kourtney’s skirt, draw the eye up and down for a long, lean look. “And when used as accessories like Jennifer’s earrings or Janelle’s ‘hairpins,’ they retain their fun, sexy, rebellious edge while bringing focus up to highlight gorgeous facial features.” The best news, Persad notes: “There’s no need to snag pricey designer duds or jewelry to try the trend — anyone can simply grab a bunch of the inexpensive pins and do the DIY thing !”
It’s no surprise that something used to hold fabric together during the design process would eventu-ally become part of the design itself. Case in point: Kourtney’s Luciana Balderrama pinned skirt. “I was inspired to create the look by accident while doing a fit-ting,” explains Balderrama. “I was using safety pins to hold the skirt together and ended up falling in love with them. Like an updated version of studs or spikes, safety pins — whether gold or silver, big or small — add a very cool metallic touch to any piece.”
“How do you flaunt your wealth or status when your peers have it, too? By going in the opposite direction,” says Michael Soloman, Ph.D., a Philadelphia-based consumer psychologist. “A cheap, functional object like a safety pin makes the ironic statement, ‘I’m rich enough to wear dia-monds, but I choose not to.’ ” Donning the pins can also represent a woman’s nurturing side due to their long asso-ciation with the diaper, notes Dr. Soloman. “It could even mean the wearer is feeling maternal!” Oh, baby!
