Expository Writing…
•Is used to explain, describe, or give information.
•Requires investigation of an idea, evaluation of evidence, and creating an argument or plan of action.
•Can be presented through comparison and contrast, definition, example, analyzing cause and effect, and direction.
Types of Expository Writing
•Autobiographies•Directions•Essays•Posters•Reports•Summaries
Tips of Expository Writing
•Develop a clear thesis statement•Create clear and logical transitions

thesis Evidence can be facts, logic, statistics, or
stories▫Conclusion – readdress the thesis, not

Descriptive Writing…
• Is the clear description of people, places, and objects, emotions, or events using specific details
•Allows for more artistic freedom than with expository writing

•Is often more personal, creative, and anecdotal than expository writing
•Can be fact or fiction

•Original short stories•Personal narratives•Retellings of stories (book report)•Sequels to stories•Story scripts
Tips of Narrative Writing
•Even though you’re telling a story, it still needs to have purpose
•Need to have a clear point of view•Use clear and concise language•Can use first person “I” pronoun•Needs to be organized
Persuasive Writing…• Also called Argument Writing• Presents reasons and examples to create an
argument in order to influence thoughts or actions
• Requires investigation of a topic AND establishing a position based on evidence from that research
• Warning: Persuasive Writing requires more research and the presentation of evidence than Expository Writing. Persuasive Writing is often longer in length.

•Clearly state your opinion and support that opinion with specific examples and reasons.▫Your thesis statement should appear early
