Selena Nguyen is among the thousands of immigrants in

Arizona expected to celebrate Thanksgiving this year. Some

are participating for the first time, while others are adding their

own cultural twist after decades of practice. Some people feel

that Thanksgiving is for everyone, while others think that

Thanksgiving symbolizes a mode of assimilation. Zaida

Morales, 33, moved from Ensenada, Mexico, to Phoenix more

than 20 years ago. She says that her family took on

Thanksgiving because they really wanted to fit in. Eventually,

the holiday “took on the meaning that it's meant to be, which is

a moment to be with family," Morales said. For the Nguyens,

Thanksgiving this year is extra special because the family has

overcome challenges. "We thank God for what we have, how

we've been through hard times and have a better life in the

United States," Nguyen said. "That's how it became our

tradition. It's not just considered an American tradition

anymore."
