Who will take it home in 2019?

Founded in 1983, the AVP is the longest standing and most well-known American beach volleyball organization, facilitating national tournaments, developing new talent, invigorating communities through sport, and promoting a beach volleyball lifestyle across the United States.

In partnership with Hudson River Park, the AVP Gold Series New York City Open will take place at Gansevoort Peninsula in Hudson River Park in 2019.

The third stop on tour brings the AVP pros to New York City, the East Coast host of the AVP for the fifth consecutive year. With this tournament being the only one played in the Eastern time zone, in the nation’s most populous city, the first to occur after the unofficial start to summer (Memorial Day), and the first of the AVP Gold Series with elevated prize money and points, the New York City event will be a defining one on the 2019 schedule.

The AVP in New York City is a staple, and has quickly become a favorite event for both fans and athletes because of its energetic atmosphere and unique location. In 2018, the AVP saw Phil Dalhausser, Nick Lucena, Summer Ross, and Sara Hughes take home first place in the NYC Open. We are excited to see who will take it home this year.

The AVP is excited to welcome you to the 2019 NYC Open.

The 2019 season is shaping up to be an amazing experience for all, highlighted by eight unique tour stops. AVP events embrace the beauty of our sport and the lifestyle, and we look forward to sharing this with the community in NYC.

The 2019 Gold Series NYC Open will be made up of 16 Main Draw teams for both men and women — 10 auto entries, 2 wild cards, and 4 qualifier teams. Athletes are competing for a slice of the $300,000 in prize money.

Besides watching the world-class athletes battle for the podium, attendees can enjoy an interactive sponsor village experience: partaking in top local food options, VIP hospitality zones, drinks, and physical activities.

In addition, our grassroots programs continue to grow and make great strides in uniting the sport of beach volleyball by systematically tapping every market in America. Our mission is to allow every participant within beach volleyball to experience the AVP brand.

We strive to make every experience an enjoyable and unforgettable one, and we look forward to an excellent season. So sit back, chill out, and enjoy all that the AVP has to offer.

The AVP pros are ready for a new season of exciting matches and big prizes. Whether you are pulling for an aspiring new team - or a team of veterans - here is the breakdown for the teams to watch on the men’s side.

Phil Dalhausser and Nick Lucena are both Florida natives that have established themselves as two of the top AVP athletes in the country. Dalhausser’s block and Lucena’s defense is a deadly combination and their dominant road to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics proved that.

Jake Gibb and Taylor Crabb are also ready for the new season. The former NCAA Player of the Year from Long Beach State brings explosive defense and creativity to the sand. Combine that with Gibb’s veteran savvy and you’ve got a team that is entertaining to watch and tough to beat. Tri Bourne and Trevor Crabb - Hawaiian natives and childhood friends from Waikiki – are ready to hit the 2019 season like a wave. Both have their foundation as blockers, can play defense, possess power and finesse in their game.

NEW TEAM ALERT: Sean Rosenthal and Ricardo Santos. These Olympians have medals to back up their skills and showcase their experience. Rosie has made it to two Olympics in 2008 and 2012 with Gibb. His partner, Santos, has snagged gold, silver, and bronze jewelry from four Olympiads, representing Brazil.

Ryan Doherty is paired up with John Hyden. Hyden is the oldest player in history to win an international tournament (41 years, 8 months, 15 days) when he and Bourne captured gold in 2014 at the FIVB Berlin event and Doherty, a former baseball pitcher from Notre Dame who has the distinction of tying for the tallest player on the beach (7-1) with Wilt Chamberlain.

It’s a crucial year for American Women as the new guard battles to establish itself in the AVP – and we can’t wait to see how this season unfolds. These female teams will kick off the summer with us:

April Ross and Alix Klineman played together last year. Ross, a true competitor, already has silver and bronze on her Olympic resume. Not only is Ross one of the most talented players to hit the beach, she’s teamed up with the 6-4 Klineman, who gave up the indoor game to step back onto the sand of her native Manhattan Beach. The duo won four AVP tournaments in 2018, including the last three of the season.

Sara Hughes and Summer Ross may be young, but they are a force to be reckoned with on the beach. n the 2018 season, these two took home two AVP titles and appeared in four finals, frequently facing Ross/Klineman which has turned into an ongoing battle the fans are itching to see.

Emily Day and Betsi Flint are both Loyola Marymount University grads. Even though they attended at different times – and never even really knew each other until the 2018 season – keep an eye out for these Lions. the duo won twice on the AVP tour last year and they’ve set their eyes on the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

A new team formed in 2018, Emily Stockman and Kelley Larsen bring veteran savvy into the 2019 season. They played four AVP events together last year and captured a season-high third place in the iconic Manhattan Beach Open. Although not the AVP finishes they were hoping for last season, don’t underestimate this team.
