  • 3. Lois Duncan
    • Lois Duncan is a famous writer of young adult mysteries. Unfortunately, Who Killed My Daughter? is not a novel. It is a compelling as any of her novels, but is a true account of her efforts to find out who murdered her daughter and why.
    • Lois Duncan has said she cant remember a time when she didnt consider herself a writer. She started submitting stories to magazines when she was 10, and when she was 13, she started selling them.
  • 4.
    • By age 16, she had sold enough stories to buy herself a jeep and has never stopped writing. Who Killed My Daughter? was written as way to work through some of her grief and suspicions about her daughters death.
  • 5.
    • Child Moving Inland
    • We lived by the sea for so many years That she stopped noticing long ago The swish of water against the rocks And the cry of gulls when the tide was low.
    • She never heard, when she lay in bed, The sea wind whispering past our door Or the constant murmuring all night long Of restless waves on a sandy shore.
    • It's only since we have come away That we find her listening for the sea. I think she never had guessed before How strangely silent a night could be.
    • Heres an example of a poem Lois wrote and published when she was just 17.
  • 6. Lois Daughter, Kaitlyn
    • Kaitlyn was the youngest of Lois Duncans 5 children.
    • She was a loving daughter and curious and energetic.
    • But she often trusted people she shouldnt have trusted.
    • This curiosity and misplaced trust led her to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, so that on July 16, 1989, when she was just 18, she was murdered because of what she knew.
  • 7. Kaitlyns Boyfriend, Dung
    • 26-year-old Dung Nguyen was not who he seemed to be.
    • To Lois Duncan, he seemed to be a sweet, young, displaced Vietnamese man who loved Kaitlyn very much.
    • In reality he was involved in car insurance scams and drug dealing and was at least partially responsible for Kaitlyns death.
  • 8. Event Timeline
    • Kaitlyn shows up at her parents
    • house upset about Dung.
    • At 6:15 P.M. Kaitlyn says shes
    • going to Susans house for
    • dinner.
    • Three hours pass before Kaitlyn shows up at Susans. During that time Kaitlyn meets a man she is secretly romantically involved with. They drive in his car to a villa in the hills where Kaitlyn witnesses a big drug deal happening involving a very powerful man.
    • This powerful man puts out a contract on Kaitlyn to prevent her from telling other people about what she saw.
  • 9.
    • Kaitlyn does go to Susans but leaves at 10:45 saying she suddenly remembered she has to study for a test the next day.
    • At 11:00 P.M., as Kaitlyn is driving
    • home to her apartment, she is shot
    • twice in the head.
    • The police say it was a senseless
    • drive-by shooting and start
    • searching for a beige VW.
    • While Dung is at the hospital, his
    • friends throw a car painting party at Kaitlyns apart-ment to turn a beige VW black.
    • Lois learns that Dung was involved in some car insurance scams and that Kaitlyn had previously run to the apartment manager several times begging for shelter and for him to change the locks.
  • 10.
    • Dung is hospitalized after supposedly stabbing himself in the stomach because of his grief.
    • Lois starts consulting psychics.
    • The police start looking for a dark blue Ford Tempo and then a gold Camaro.
    • Lois starts posting flyers offering a
    • reward for any information.
    • The police arrest three Hispanics
    • who allegedly shot Kaitlyn.
    • Lois and Don start receiving death
    • threats.
    • Lois thinks Dung confessed to the
    • insurance car scam to take heat off
    • the drug dealing.
  • 11. Psychics Clues: Betty Muench
    • Kaitlyn was killed because of some information she had.
    • Dung was involved and knows who killed her.
    • The car that chased Kaitlyn was a low-riders car.
    • Kaitlyn had seen one of the three people most involved before, and these three people split up and went to Mexico, Chicago, and overseas.
    • Kaitlyn was trying to get somewhere by 9:00.
    • The letters R & J on
    • the door of a white
    • vehicle are important.
  • 12. Psychics Clues: Noreen Renier
    • Kait was romantically involved with someone besides Dung at the time of her death, and this person was someone her mother knew and disapproved of.
    • This second boyfriend drove Kait to a villa in the hills above Albuquerque on the night of Kaits death.
    • It was at this villa the Kait saw a powerful, well-known person buying drugs.
    • A hit man was hired to kill Kait because she was
    • going to expose the drug ring.
    • The police were afraid
    • to have anything to
    • do with this.
  • 13. Psychics Clues: Nancy Czetli
    • Dung felt Kaits independence
    • challenged his manhood, and he
    • wanted to teach her a lesson.
    • The drug deal involved a lot of money.
    • There is a credible witness still alive,
    • but he is too afraid for his own life
    • and his family to come forward.
    • The hit men were arrested because they were setup by the man that hired them to stop the investigation from going further.
    • More people will die.
  • 14. Police Blunders
    • The police say it was a senseless drive-by shooting and start searching for a beige VW; but it was a professional hit, and the police should have been searching for 2 cars.
    • The police say Kait was driving the insurance scam car, but she wasnt even in the car according to accident reports.
    • Lois gives the police letters Dung wrote and offers to get them translated, but the police say they dont need her help because there is an officer in their department who is fluent in Vietnamese. Yet the police never get
    • the letters translated, and there never was an
    • officer in their depart
    • -ment fluent in
    • Vietnamese.
  • 15.
    • Lois finds out that 3 phone calls were made from Kaitlyns apartment the night Kaitlyn was shot after Kaitlyn and Dung were both at the hospital. Lois gives the phone numbers to the police, but she never gets information back on who the calls were to.
    • The police start looking for a dark blue Ford Tempo based on information given to them by a supposed witness of the car chase, but this witness said he saw the chase about an hour before it took place.
    • The police dont question any of
    • the Vietn
