Life History Born on -7th MARCH,1951 Mr.O.P. Bhatt started his banking career as a

Probationary Officer with State Bank of India in 1972 .

He was the Project Coordinator for the Bank’s computerization project

After his return from Washington – appointed as General Manager at Lucknow

Later as Chief General Manager of the Bank’s North

East Circle . Managing Director of State Bank of Travancore . He was appointed Chairman of SBI in June 2006 . New Chairman of the Indian Banks' Association (IBA)

for 2010-11.

The Chairman of the Banking & Financial Institutions Committee of FICCI

Director on the board of several other companies like EXIM Bank and GIC

Member of the Boards of ICRIER, XLRI, IBPS, IDRBT, KVIC and National Co-operative Development Corporation

His Role..Mr. Bhatt began at SBI – # a process of consolidating the Bank's

strengths . # innovating new products to suit today's

market . # effective steps to ensure that

technology . # business processes are harnessed

towards expansion # deeper penetration of the market, both

domestic and foreign # Transformation exercise – “parivartan”

Under his guidance The bank has achieved rapid branch expansion.

Bank opened its 10,000th branch.

under the aegis of Mr. Bhatt, steadily improved its Global ranking.

First - One was large and midsize corporations.

The other segment was the young and affluent. They had never been a significant customer base for the bank,

How he faced these challenges? Voluntary retirement scheme was ended soon Also stopped the rollout of the centralized computerization

system.

But these actions didn’t touch the doldrums that had settled over the

bank. What he did there? There is no magic to it . Everything was just

a common sense.

He said “I had a vision for the bank, but I needed to communicate it.”

Started by talking to senior executives in small groups

During my second month,he held a conclave where 25 of the bank’s senior leaders sat together for five days talking things over.

What practical measures came from the conclave?

We left with a 14-point agenda that fell into three broad groups .

The first involved issues directly related to the business .

Our second group of ideas focused on how to facilitate these businesses .

The third area, hitherto taboo in the bank, centered on people .

How did he reach out to his massive workforce? A first step was to edit the state of the nation

address into a presentation that the deputy managing directors could make to all 10,000 branch managers.

In addition, this was the first time the chief general managers had met with all the branch managers under them .

Message to the trade unions- he had brought senior representatives from the unions and officers’ associations together in a meeting similar to the management conclaves. He spent four days with 30 leaders from across the country

Other changes bought by him in the bank.

Within his first few months as chairman, he and his team created three new business groups .

One was the treasury , 2nd he created the rural business group , the third group, corporate strategy and new business.

His steps to sustain these changes?

Implemented a new program called parivartan .

The idea behind parivartan was to sensitize everyone at the bank the need for ongoing

change.

Went to Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education (now University of Ballarat), Australia to study brewing and qualified as a master brewer in 1974.

Started her professional career as trainee brewer in Carlton & United Beverages in 1974.

In Biocon

Founded Biocon India with a capital of Rs. 10,000/- in 1978.

The initial operation was to extract an enzyme from papaya.

Her application for loans was turned down by banks on two counts Over the years, the company grew under her stewardship

In 2004, Biocon went for an IPO and the issue was over-subscribed by over 30 times.
