Fastener Quick Reference GuideBelow are descriptions for the more common fasteners we carry in inventory. This guide is intended to provide a quick reference to the selection of the appropriate fastener for the job at hand. Please always abide by any applicable safety specifications before performing any fastener assembly.

COMMON BOLTS & SCREWS

Hex bolts, or hex cap screws, are used in machinery and construction. Can be used with a nut, or in a tapped hole. Fully threaded hex bolts are also known as tap bolts.

Lag bolts, or lag screws, are large wood screws with hex heads. Typically used for wood construction and land-scaping.

Carriage bolts have smooth, domed heads with a square section under-neath that pulls into the material to prevent spinning during installation.

Wood screws have a coarser pitch (few threads per inch) than sheet metal or machine screws, and often have an unthreaded shank.

Machine screws are fully treaded for use with a nut or in a tapped hole. Certain types are sometimes referred to as stove bolts.

Sheet metal screws have sharp points and threads, and are designed to be driven directly into sheet metal.

Socket screws are machine screws with an internal hex socket drive. Longer lengths may have a smooth shank. They exhibit some space saving advantages over hex cap screws. Socket heads take up less space themselves and don’t require side room for wrenches.

Bolt Grades Grade 8 is common in heavy manufacturing like large trucks and tractors. Grade 5 is commonly used in automobile manufacturing. Grade 2 is found mostly in household and construction applications.

COMMON HEAD STYLES

Hex Heads are typically used with larger bolts and screws, and tightened with a wrench.

Pan Heads have a slightly domed head that sits above the surface.

Flat Heads are installed in a counter-sunk hole for a flat surface.

Round Heads are tall domed heads, used primarily for decorative purposes.

Oval Heads are a low domedand countersunk heads, used primarily for decorative purposes.

Truss Heads are slightly domed, with a wide head for an extra large surface area.

Socket Heads are narrow with a socket drive, and knurled or smooth sides.

Button Heads feature a medium dome. Typically used with a hex socket drive.

COMMON MATERIALS & FINISHESZinc Plating is a soft decorative, corrosion resistant finish. Suitable for indoors or otherwise dry conditions.

Black Oxide is most common on socket head cap screws and other machines screws. This provides very mild pro-tection against corrosion and usually has an oil film added for additional protection.

Hot-Dipped Galvanized is commonly used for outdoor applications, providing the best protection next to stain-less steel.

Stainless Steel is inherently resistant to corrosion. Amongst the various grades available, the most common grade for general usage are in the “300” series.

Yellow Chromate offers a greater degree of protection from white corrosion than does standard zinc plating. yellow chromate adds 72-112 hours of salt spray resistance vs. 48-96 hours for standard zinc.

DETERMINING TORQUE & GRIP LENGTHWhile every bolted joint is unique and the optimum tightening torque should be determined for each application with careful consideration, the widely recognized engineering formula, T= K x D x P:

T Target tighten torque (the result of this formula is in inch pounds, dividing by 12 yields foot pounds.

K Coefficient of friction (nut factor), always an estimation in this formula.

D Bolts nominal diameter in inches.

P Bolt’s desired tensile load in pounds (generally 75% of yield strength).

As with determining proper torque, grip length (the unthreaded portion of the shank) is unique to the application and the fastener material used. There must be at least 1-bolt thread fully protruding beyond the end of the nut when the nut has been fully torqued. Some specs call out for1-1/2 others say 2-threads.

Grade 5 Grade 8Grade 2

In a bolt assembly, the overall bolt length needs to cover:• The thickness of the washers and

nuts that are part of the assembly• The projection length• The grip length
