Salmon Festival

Saturday, September 8 is Salmon Festival day in Invermere, with a line-up of free events hosted by the Shuswap Indian Band and Akisqnuk First Nation. The celebration starts at James Chabot Provincial Park from 10 am to noon, then continues at the Shuswap Indian Band Hall from noon until 10 pm. Learn about the past, present and future of salmon in the Columbia River, and their importance to everyone in the valley. And yes, you get to eat salmon.

Robservations

As always, Robservations is the last article I write for this issue. My brain has a lot of thoughts in it and a lot of opinions about many topics. Unfortunately our society dictates that you have to be pretty careful to not offend anyone with your comments. It makes things a bit tougher. Just a couple quick and easy thoughts this week. First off, quit arguing. We all want to be right about everything (and I know that I am haha) but sometimes it is just easier to give up and let the other person be wrong. It is just better to be kind than it is to be right. You will retain a lot more friends that way. Another thought is about this past week’s message at my Church (Alliance). It was about humility and what that means. Hu-mility is the basis of so many virtues. Basically, humility is thinking of others be-fore yourself. Helping others meet their needs, achieve success, find their happi-ness or whatever will change your life. Know that your needs will be met as long as you care for others, act with kindness and show humility in your life. It is a good feeling being a good person and you come across unlimited blessings when you are doing the right thing as often as possible. Anyways, have a fantastic week. I hope that you are treated well and that you are paying it forward in multiple ways.

Rockies Hockey

The Columbia Valley Rockies are ready to go for the 2018/2019 Kootenay Internation-al Junior Hockey League season. they payed 4 exhibition games and came out with a .500 record of one win, one loss and 2 ties. The Rockies are on the road for the first four games of the season. They will be back at home on Friday, September 21 to host the Golden Rockets. The Rockies are a nice part of our commu-nity so get out there and support them as much as you can this season. The more fans in the stands, the more inspiration in the players so let’s all do our part. Besides, it is kind of fun and exciting.

There is an interesting trend in dogs that humans should work on for them-selves. That is the fact that most dogs really enjoy meeting new dogs and getting to know each other quickly. It does not matter what breed dogs are. It is actually pretty cool that there are so many different forms of us yet we instantly recognize each other as a potential new friend. Personally, as a Bassett Hound, I know that I am the most handsome but the other dogs don’t get jealous, they just want to say ‘Hi’. It doesn’t matter what size a dog is or what colour the fur is, we all have this thing about undying love for our humans and other pack mates. Of course I don’t get along with every sin-gle dog, but who does? But we all give each other a fair shot and if things go wrong we just walk away and forget about it. No judgement, no grudge, just carry on and look for the next adventure.

What Country Am I?

I am a Central American country with a population of 4.5 million, many of whom live near my capital city of San Jose. I bor-der with Nicaragua and Panama and have coastlines on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. I am the ‘greenest’ country in the World and very eco-diverse. Kidney Failure

It is amazing to see how many people pass through the renal (kidney) wards in the hospitals. Kidney disease and kidney failure are definitely a lot more common than you would imagine. As we consume more and more processed food and chemicals, North Americans are getting sicker and sicker. Kidney failure is a growing industry. It is also amazing to see how far the medi-cal industry has come in treating kidney failure. Dialysis, both hemo and peritoneal are quite the incredible concept. They keep a lot of people alive. I have been very blessed with the care and treatment that I have received. I am also pretty fortunate to be able to do the home peritoneal dialysis thing. But I must admit that I really do not enjoy putting in hours of health stuff every day. It is kind of depressing really. I have had to accept it as part of my new life but I cer-tainly don’t enjoy it at all. So take care of yourselves out there. Put some effort into eating healthy. Your food is the most important part of your health. It is either poison or nutrition. Eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables for starters. Don’t follow my path.

Body Language

You can tell a lot about a woman’s mood by the position of her hands. For example, if they are wrapped tightly around your neck, she is probably a bit frustrated with you.

School Zones

Just a reminder that the schools are now in session. This means that we should all be very careful when driving through school zones. Always be aware on the road as an acci-dent can happen in an instant and have life-long consequences.

My Progress

So my surgery has healed up and I am now actively using my new peritoneal line. It has been in action for about four days now. This tube seems to be draining much bet-ter than the previous one. So far I have only tried it during the day but I am hoping to give the night cycler machine a try short-ly. It would be wonderful if it would just do it for me overnight and I could live a pretty normal daytime life. In the world of chemo and cancer, after this week I will have only 2 more hits of chemo. That is exciting. I am not sure if the side effects will ease off or not. I hope to regain some strength. I am not sure if the multiple myeloma has gone into remission or not. It has definitely backed off quite a bit and my bloodwork shows very minimal traces of the bad pro-teins produced by the cancer so I am hop-ing things are all good.

Tough to Survive

I am really getting sick of the cost of living in our country. We have a lot of greedy, immoral people in our governments at eve-ry level and they just want more and more of our money. It seems that the harder you work the more you are punished financially. Income tax is brutal but really it is nothing compared to all the hidden taxes and costs. By the time we buy food from a grocery store it has been taxed several times. Gas is loaded with money for the government. Fees and licenses are crazy, And then there is BC Hydro and ICBC. What a cou-ple of painful jokes those are in our lives. Somehow this all needs to change. We need to find leaders who actually care about the people, not padding their own payrolls, pensions and corporate buddies. I am not sure how to stop all of this but I am hoping something changes or I will be part of the intensities in ‘tent cities’ hap-pening out there. Sorry for the rant but Canada is almost broken for the average citizen.

community water system for 6 weeks.

This program, carried out twice yearly, is necessary to maintain the quality of

Side Effects

One of the things I have not really men-tioned is body temperature. Between the kidney stuff and the chemo/cancer stuff, my blood levels can get a bit low. Generally this leads to me getting cold. It is crazy how it can be 28 degrees outside but I can still get shivers. Anytime I am sitting for a while I will start to get shivers. Full body shivers. Many chemo folks lose their appetite and a lot of weight. Fortunately I love food too much for that to be an issue. I have not lost much weight at all through this. I had lost quite a bit just prior to my kidneys go-ing down but since chemo it has actually only been a couple pounds. I would have to say, very strongly, that cannabis has really helped with all of that. It helps with nausea and appetite. Anyways, with only a couple more hits of chemo left, I am hoping that most of these side effects will fade away.

Planning is underway for this year’s Christmas Bureau, with a meeting booked at Christ Church Trinity on Thursday, September 6 at 6:30 pm. Everyone is invited to attend. Pride in the Valley

It’s exciting to see a Pride group starting up in the Columbia Valley, with two fun events in the works for Saturday, Septem-ber 22. The big event is a drag show at the Horsethief Creek Pub, with tickets on sale for $20. Ages 19+ are welcome. The show starts at 9 pm and features two local performers as well as guest talent. These shows sell out every time so get your tickets soon. Lakeshore Resort will host an afternoon of family fun earlier in the day, from noon to 4 pm. Terry Fox Run

The annual Terry Fox Run is coming up on Sunday, September 16, with a ton of par-ticipation options for all ages and abilities. If you’re the sort to collect pledges and fundraise in advance, now’s the time to do that. You can also register and make a donation on the morning of the event, which takes place at J.A. Laird Elementary at 8:30 am. The run goes from 9 to 11 am, with 3km, 5km and 10km routes. Bicycles, wheelchairs, strollers, roller-blades and leashed dogs are all welcome at this non-competitive event, and you can walk it instead of running. It’s a nice way to show your support for those living with cancer, and to remember those who have died from this terrible disease.

Where’s the Puck?

I have been running a little contest around the Rockies hockey for the last couple of seasons but I do not think it will happen this year. Sadly I am too lazy as it is quite a bit of organizational work to find the photos and round up the prizes. Thanks to everyone who has been faithful-ly entering and thanks to all the business-es who contributed prizes. Sorry for my lack of energy on this one.

Dog Owners

“Is that your Great Dane out there?” asked the lady in the diner. “Yes it is. Why?” “My Chihuahua just killed it.” “How could that happen?” “I think it got caught in his throat.”

Voice Recognition

So I have a couple friends who are still living without cell phones. They have land lines (and happy lives) and are content with that. It is similar to how a lot of us grew up. One of them was just given a cell phone and within a week she made an interesting comment. He mom had called her on it and it was the first call she had received in the week. Everything else was a text. She was excited to hear a voice on the phone again. I must admit that I do prefer chatting on the phone more than texting. Texting is convenient but just not as per-sonal.

Monday Mornings

Another Monday morning of getting up and scrambling to get all this writing done. And another Monday morning with a beautiful fresh rainfall. I am still celebrating rainfall as things have been getting a bit smoky again. The fires are still out there and the fire ban is still in place. It has not been as hot out there but things are still pretty dry. Enjoy your week and celebrate all the Mondays you have ahead of you.

So it is that time of year again. Summer is over and the population of the valley drops by a huge amount. We have all had good, busy times in our businesses but we know that for many of us, things are about to get quite a bit quieter. Now is when the businesses begin to count on the locals to keep things going. How do we stay in touch with the locals? You are looking at it. The Valley Peak is by far the most effective way to reach nearly everyone in the valley. I have to admit that one of the blessings of my health issues is that it has given me a great writing topic for several months. Who knows what will happen when the chemo is done. I will stress that it is very important to be open with people with your health prob-lems. People can’t help you if they don’t know what you are dealing with and well, it is nice to have support. Thanks to all the people who ask about me, wish me well and give me a hand when needed. You are a huge part of my positive state of mind and my healing.

Bowling season is just around the corner and Valley Alley Bowling Centre is signing up individuals and teams now. There are leagues for seasoned bowlers and new-bies. Grab four friends or co-workers to make your own team, or sign up as a single. Bowling league season runs October through April and makes for a fun, social night out through the darker months. Everyone enjoys throwing a stone, draw-ing, a good take-out and especially a raise.

Those are all just some of the everyday pleasures that are incorporated into the game of curling. How about sweeping? Everyone loves that at home so of course we want to pick up some of that recreationally haha. It is a lot of fun. Social, healthy, competitive and more. Come to the AGM in early Octo-ber.
