Teacher Appreciation Week National Teacher Appreciation Day is Tuesday, May 7th, and I have a fantastic team to appreciate. I am extremely grateful for the Whittier Middle School teachers and staff. They regularly go above and beyond to support students and pitch in at school in any way they can. Thank you, Team Whittier! On Thursday, the Vineyard Church in Mechanic Falls is providing lunch for the teachers. I am looking for a few parents who wouldn’t mind supervising a loud cafeteria to allow teachers to leave lunch duty and enjoy a meal with their colleagues. More Great National History Day News Abby Ayers will get to share her NHD Exhibit on the Stonewall Riots at the Smithsonian as she was chosen to be the Maine representative at the National Museum of American History Exhibit Showcase in Washington, DC on June 12th. This means that she will share her project with curators, staffers, members of the public, and an occasional VIP throughout the day.

Standards Recovery this Wednesday! The first round of Standards Recovery went very well last Wednesday. Students used the time well and had lots of support from their teachers. We have one more session this Wednesday; please make sure your child attends if he or she has been invited. This week’s session is May 8th from 1:30-4:00. This is an opportunity for students to receive additional instruction, practice skills, complete work, and reassess to meet standards they have missed during the school year.

We will soon be talking about summer school and students who should attend. This intervention should help move some students off of that list if they are willing to put in the work. If you have questions about your child’s participation, please give the school a call, and we will get you connected with a teacher who can answer your questions.

Sienna Toth, Gold Key Recipient I previously shared that Whittier Writer, Sienna Toth, is being awarded a Silver Medal in the National Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program.  She achieved a Gold Key Award at the Regional Level for her short story, My Friend Buttons. As a Gold Key recipient, her story was then reviewed by a national panel of writers, curators and educators and selected as a silver medalist.  Sienna now has an opportunity to travel to the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City on June 6. Her family has an account at Roopers and people can donate their returns to “Sienna’s Scholastic Trip.” Please consider making a donation to help Sienna and her family get to New York.
