As I reflect on my year journey as the Minnesota Simmental Queen, I am flooded with emotion. I not only gained an immense amount of knowledge about our industry and breed, but I have also had the privilege of meeting and working alongside incred-ible friends and mentors. A few of my most memorable experiences as Queen include representing Minnesota at the National Simmental Junior Show, as well as the Sim-mental breed at both the Minnesota State Fair and Beef Expo. Another highlight was the opportunity I had to teach local 4th graders about the importance of the beef industry and explaining how they play an important role in agriculture. Looking ahead, I will use the knowledge and my experiences to advocate for the Simmental breed and beef industry while I continue my education at NDSU. Most importantly, I will cherish all of the friendships I gained along the way. I am blessed to have wonderful people in my life and I especially thank my amazing family and team for all of their support this past year. Lastly, I would like to thank both the Minnesota Junior and Senior Simmental Associa-

tions for their immense support of the Simmental Breed. Thank you for this opportunity in representing you as the Minne-sota Simmental Queen; it truly was a remarkable year!

INCENTIVE PROGRAM FOR JUNIORS SPONSORED BY THE MINNESOTA SIMMENTAL ASSOCIATIONThe Minnesota Simmental Association is sponsoring a new incentive program for juniors. When a junior purchases an open female

at the annual MN State Simmental Sale, the junior can reconsign the heifer as a bred for the next year’s auction, or if the junior purchased a bred female, they may consign her resulting off-spring to sell at the next year’s auction. When the junior brings back

the animal to sell, they will only be charged 1/2 of the usual sale’s expenses. This is a one-time option available to all juniors. Animals must be purchased and resold during consecutive years to take advantage of the program. Consider the opportunities as

Greetings Simmental Enthusiasts, We have entered into a truly unique 2017 and are looking forward to the 44th Annual Minnesota Simmental Association State Sale and Annual meeting festivities. In 2016 we were energized by the change in sale venue to Haas Livestock in Cannon Falls, MN. This transition proved to be a tremendous success and was received positively by buyers, consignors and overall MSA membership. The only negative is that I don’t see the Haas group being able to replicate the absolutely gorgeous weather we were blessed with at the inaugural 2016 sale! Our membership has once again risen to the challenge to present breed-leading genetic lots, open heifers, bred females and bulls. We welcome you to come join us once again as you search for your next herd improvement tool. We’re also holding the Annual Membership meeting at the Haas Livestock facility so be sure to join us while you’re there to view the cattle. The Annual Banquet is Friday night, February 24, 2017, at Treasure Island Casino. Room blocks are still being held for Thursday and Friday night of the event if reserved by February 2, 2017. As many of you have likely heard, Minnesota will be hosting the 2018 Simmental Jr. Nationals from July 1-6, 2018 at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul, MN. After our recent experience hosting the largest Simmental Regionals ever in 2015, it is truly awe-inspiring to see the MN Jr. Simmental Association and MN Simmental Association take on the challenge of hosting the largest Junior event for the hottest breed in the industry! There are multiple opportunities to participate in committees and to help with event sponsorship so be sure to reach out to Jessica Aggen or any member of the MJSA if you are interested in participating. Our hosting this event is ahead of what was originally planned and our willingness to take on this challenge is truly a testament to the tremendous job done by our entire Junior and Senior membership! As I close out my 3rd term as MSA president, it is humbling to see how this association continues to grow in positive ways and take on a variety of challenges that would prove difficult for lesser groups. This is truly one of the greatest state breed associations in the country and the collaboration we continue to show each other is amazing. Please know that all the work you do throughout the years to promote your programs and Minnesota Simmental is appreciated!

Michael Schmidt, MSA President

Greetings MJSA Members, First off, thank you for letting me serve as your “virtual” president this year! As a sophomore in college, I have been actively involved in livestock judging and traveling the country for Lake Land College, Mattoon, Illinois. Also, thank you for supporting me as I ran for AJSA trustee this past summer in Des Moines, Iowa. It was a wonderful experience and I strongly encourage MJSA members to consider running in the years ahead. I was so proud of the Minnesota representation at the national show in Iowa. We truly have a wonderful organization of great people and awesome cattle! At the Minnesota Beef Expo we discussed new ideas that are being planted this year to reward and recognized your involvement. One is our MJSA Points Recognition Program. Junior members will be recognized and receive a cash prize for attending state and national events. A new scholarship was created to encourage junior members to attend the AJSA Leadership Conference held in August. The third new opportunity is the MJSA Continuing Education Scholarship. MJSA members who are a High School Senior or older can apply for a scholarship to support their education plans after school. This includes a trade school, technical college, university or beyond. I am excited to start these new opportunities and hope they can continue to grow in the years to come. The Minnesota Simmental State Sale is a great weekend to get involved in the organization. The support Simmental breeders provide to our youth is outstanding and sincerely appreciated. This “virtual” president will be unable to attend the State Sale as I will be in San Antonio, Texas judging. I will be sending you warm thoughts and wishes from the south that weekend. I do look forward to seeing you all this spring and summer at jackpot shows, the North Central Regional Classic and the Minnesota State Fair. Thank you for letting me serve MJSA this past year, and to our advisor, Jessica Aggen, and the officer team who were always just a text or email away. My year may come to an end, but my plan is to continue to be involved in our state and national associations!

Selling IVF Flush of HS Stop And Stare U118L

If we had to make a decision what 2 cows to load on Noah’s ark, I don’t think there would be much discussion. Stop & Stare would be making her way up the ramp before the first rain drop hit the ground. She has done more for our program, especially our SimAngus™ division, than any female we have ever had. It doesn’t matter the sire choice, she just makes us look good time and time again. We may not be ready to open the flood gates and let this one go, but we are willing to do the next best thing and sell the right to one IVF collection on Stop & Stare. Stop & Stare works great on conventional flushing but we have decided to start utilizing IVF to make a few more heifer calves. She averages 14-15 freezable eggs per collection with her last freezing 17 with almost all being grade #1. The Stop & Stare progeny continue to make the breed literally stop & stare. The Lookout mating has produced many sale topping daughters ranging from $20,000-$45,000, claimed many division honors in Louisville and also the 2017 NWSS Res Champion Percentage Junior Show Female for Claire Trennephol. HILB Stare & Believe, the first Bushs Unbelievable daughter, sold for $30,000 half interest in the 2016 Jewels of the Northland and was calf Champion in Louisville and Denver. But don’t count out the Stop & Stare boys! HILB Olympus sold for $25,500 to Lee Cattle Co and is part of their main bull battery. A full brother to him, HILB Poseidon, was the anchor bull in the 2017 Res NWSS % Pen of 3 and was called the best bull in the whole show by judges Kyle Colyer and Shane Bedwell. Stop & Stare is open and ready for collection. Seller guarantees 6 transferrable embryos with an open top. (If using sexed semen or reverse sorting semen it needs to be approved by Trans Ova for quality.) Buyer responsible for cost of semen, flush, freezing and transfers.

Hannah Montana had definitely established her spot in our donor program for her ability to produce sound structured, big bellied, long fronted cattle that have the look. She can stamp that show ring appeal one after another and not sacrifice performance in the pasture. Several daughters have entered the donor program for breeders across the country after being top sellers in the Jewels of the Northland Sale. One of her top daughters HSF Hannah W986 that we sold half interest in for $11,000 produced the Reserve Division Champion Female HSF/JRB Mia B411 in a huge division behind the Grand Champion Female at the Iowa State Fair which happened to be the largest show in breed history. Hook’s Broadway has hit the ground running with first calf crop this spring. This mating should really work. Embryos will be purebred Simmental. FVF Glitter in the Air is a member of the legendary dream cross mating of Black Glitter and BC Lookout. The Black Glitter family is having tremendous success in the sale and show rings, with many high sellers and Champions on a national level. They have proved themselves to be even better in production. Hip, Rib, Top, Bone, Shape, Dimension and Soundness tied into a Zip front end are all attributes she possesses. Her first daughter, by Broker, was the 2013 high selling open heifer in THE ONE. Three daughters have shown very well in Denver, all standing second in their classes behind division winners. In her short career, she is approaching the $200,000 mark in progeny and embryo sales. The mating to STF SHOCKING DREAM provides a unique twist in the pedigree and he has produced multiple high sellers and show winning progeny. This mating may her best yet. You’ll have fun! A championship mating! We are excited to offer full sib embryos to the recent Junior PB Heifer Calf Champion at the National Western a few weeks ago. That heifer was admired by many for her overall power, look and structural integrity. The heifer has a lot of future and so do these embryos. The donor dam of this mating GLS Precious Y19 is becoming the cornerstone of our breeding program with awesome daughters and sons topping our production sale and other daughters being retained in our herd for our donor lineup. You can see Y19’s genetics throughout our production sale this year. The sire of these embryos is Profit. He is proving himself to be Pilgrim’s greatest son and a consistent sire of quality. Profit’s full sister was Reserve PB heifer in both Louisville and Denver this year. The genetic work is all done on this one; buy these eggs, put them in your herd and enjoy the rewards! Hotcakes is an absolute tank, just massive in her total presence and yet so elegant and attractive in her overall design. She’s big ribbed, extremely long bodied, huge topped and sits down on a really good set of feet and legs. She stems from the infamous H25 cow family being a granddaughter of Windy Ridge’s prolific Dana cow. A cow family that has been extremely successful in producing good solid hardworking bulls and females across the U.S. With Hotcake’s own yearling weight EPD in the top 30% of the breed and milk EPD in the top 15%, I’ve got a feeling she’s going to turn out to be a whale of a cow, bringing in those heavy weight calves time and time again. Her mating to Executive Order is extremely intriguing and with the way his calves have been received this past fall and winter this should be a for sure hit. The estimated planned mating EPDs fall in the top 30% or better for nearly every trait! If you’re in the market for some powerful, eye appealing SimAngus™ genetics, make sure you look up this beautiful lady and her little EO calf on sale day!

If your in the market for a freaky good Simmental female, here she is. This is the most unique female we have produced out of our elite donor HSF Victoria P30 that has produced well over $400,000 in earning and still going strong. At the recent SimMagic Sale in Denver, 3/4 sib embryos to this heifer commanded $1000 per embryo. C522 is a freak fronted, big bodied, stout made, supper sound donor quality female. We retained a full sib to this female that was bred the same way that laid down and had a beautiful heifer calf unassisted and has a perfect udder and is doing a great

job. Sells bred to the calving ease bull CCR Wide Range for a March 13 calf. We reserve the right to a future flush with a minimum of (6) six transferable embryos to be done at the seller’s expense and the buyer’s convenience.

What a cool pedigree to expand upon; endless possibilities! C70HR is quiet and easy to work with; one the most docile cows on the farm. I made a New Year’s resolution to be less of a cow hoarder so here it goes: When Scott Franke and I were in college, we purchased a set of 3 Glitter x Dream On eggs at the MN State Sale. Not really knowing how lucky we could be or how it would go, fast forward, a bull went to work for ENT Farms in Iowa, a heifer is now in the donor lineup at Eichacker Simmentals and I chose to purchase Scott’s share of the third calf, this female. Glamorous has been a great cow to date: 3 bulls have made the cut and are working in commercial operations, and I retained 2 daughters in my herd. This girl is in the prime of her life, and has many good years in front of her yet. Glamorous has never been flushed and sells carrying service to Hook’s Broadway for a middle of April calf. Here is your chance to invest in a full sib to the living legend HS Stop and Stare cow owned by Hilbrands Cattle Company. Opportunities like this don’t arise every day, and this is a great one you don’t want to miss. Retaining the right to 2 successful flushes at the seller’s expense and buyer’s convenience.

Several years after campaigning against this attractive, high volume Dream On x Goldmine female on the Wisconsin show stage, we had the opportunity to bring her into our operation – and we weren’t about to pass it up. We quickly moved her to our fall-calving program, where her longevity and maternal proficiency have flourished. The solid red sweetheart that sells at her side is the most recent proof. Now, with daughters in our herd, the opportunity becomes yours. Latch onto these beauties and let them work for you.

Looking for that one show heifer, Frankes Destiny is the one. SimAngus™ at its finest. Beautiful made baldy (picture perfect) it starts with her extended front end and carries that down to a sweeping rib cage to make a profile any judge take notice. This mating is a result of a flush we purchased from the Grass-Lunning program. Top genetics with a Lock N Load son, Ironhide, x Net Worth on the dam’s side. The X54 donor continues to gather accolades at the Grass-Lunning herd and we couldn’t be happier to have those genetics represented in this female. Dosey Doe is sired by WLE Uno Mas and there is cow power built in to that bull and his daughters are making super cows, as expected. We feel that after her show career, this young female has a bright future as a brood cow that will be a great producer. She has the look, structure, performance and disposition to be a great female for anyone’s herd. Recommended for a junior or anyone wanting a quiet individual; she has a sweet attitude.

Baldy Purebred alert! This suave stud has been a stand out since day one. Dapper Dan was born unassisted out of a Lizzy’s Pearl cow, and is backed by the calving ease specialist Uno Mas. This bull profiles like a champ, and I love the front end he possess. He gets out and moves like a cat, and he doesn’t sacrifice the necessary mass and muscularity we all strive to breed and select for. We feel this bull has a great future and would work well in a purebred or commercial cow herd.
