Page 1 Website:http://www.whitlockfamilyassociation.com A busy time since the last issue. I managed to finish cataloguing the December 2010 disk from Lawrence Otis - another great collection of Whitlock information, including several hundred more certificates!! While I can only include a small portion of the certificates in each Newsletter, we now have over 3100 of them and this has become a great research tool, particularly for those looking for source documentation while tracing Whitlocks and their descendants. I have recently set up a Facebook community page for the Whitlock Family Association. It gives some basic information about the Whitlock Family Association and directs people to the Website. I have also been searching for distant cousins on Facebook and have found several. As well I have had a few replies from Whitlocks and Whitelocks in reply to messages I have left regarding our website. I noticed there is a very active Facebook wall for the Whitelock Global Family. An interesting process and can understand how you can spend way too much time doing this!! I was surprised the age range of Facebook users. Many seniors have Facebook pages and I was particularly interested in the page for the octogenarian Australian Barrister, T. Bullstrode Whitelocke. I have written a short piece on Bullstrode Whitelocke for this issue of the Newsletter. I was interested to come across a Facebook page for the Hagyard family that linked me to their very useful website www.rickhagyard.com. The family traces back to Pocklington in Yorkshire in the 1500's when the name was spelled Hauckeyard. The Whitlock connection is through Thomas Hagyard (1841-1899) who married Elizabeth Grace Longman the daughter of James Longman and his wife Catherine Ann Whitlock who married in Toronto, Ontario in 1846. This family is part of the WHITLOCK01 family. I have also been plugging away at the Birth Register and have entered all the births from the old 3 x 5 cards up to 1898. Where known, the parents have been entered up to 1880. A long and tedious job but with over 37,500 entries for the combined Birth, Marriage and Death database it is great research tool already. Subscription renewals continue to come in and I very much appreciate the generosity of you all. Many renewals included something to help defray the costs of setting up the website which is very kind indeed. Some subscribed on behalf of several members in their family and that is always appreciated as well. I am a little concerned that only 54 of 87 renewals have been received but hope more will arrive with the release of the March Newsletter. I will include renewal notices with this issue for those I have not heard from yet in the hope you will support this project for another year. I would like to get the subscription total back over 100 again if possible. Some highlights of the material received this quarter include the will of Hannah (Matthews) Whitlock of Nottingham, dated 1774 and proved in 1782 (R3009) received from Robert W. Whitlock. Hannah was the widow of Nathaniel Whitlock (1700-1749) a minister of High Pavement Chapel, Nottingham. Her father-in- law, Nathaniel’s father was John Whitlock the non-conformist minister of High Pavement Chapel and the holder of the Whitlock estates in Wokingham, Berkshire. Hannah shows on the WHITLOCK02H chart. Vicky House sent us some interesting items (R3015-17) regarding Surgeon Major Thomas William Whitelock’s service in India in the mid 1800's and I have put this together into short item on him. I was very sad to receive notice (X6977) of the death of Esme Trotter of Kelowna, BC, over 35 years a fellow researcher and supporter. I have included a small tribute to Esme in this issue. Great to receive information from Naomi Arimura in Japan (X6919) who descends from Harry Joseph Whitlock the well known 19 th Century photographer from Birmingham, Warwickshire. Wonderful to actually connect with a descendant of this part of the WHITLOCK77 family. ( See her Main Line in this issue). In the latest package from Lawrence Otis was fairly a extensive obituary of Anne Whitlock (Westaway) (Phillip) Palk (X6963) detailing the interesting and well traveled life of this Brantford, Ontario native. (See article in this issue).

There are also some great pictures listed in this issue, including a nice collection from Peter A. Rusling ofmembers of the Whitelock family from the greater London area (PH1207-PH1218) and those from PennyMills of the family of Colonel George Frederick Ashford Whitlock (PH1203-PH1206).

I have recently been intrigued by the correspondence with a couple of members of the Whitlock familytrying to confirm their descent from their black slave ancestor and a member possibly connected to theWHITLOCK16 family. It will be interesting to see if our DNA project will be of assistance in theirresearch.

All great material and my thanks to everyone for their continued contributions to our collection of Whitlockresearch.

ANNE WHITLOCK (WESTAWAY) (PHILLIP)PALK (1937-2009)In the latest package of information from Lawrence Otis was the following article that appeared inBrantford, Ontario Expositor in July 2009.

Outspoken heritage advocate had passion for community

By MICHELLE RUBY

Anne Westaway-Palk had an outspoken passion for Brantford.

As a member of the city's heritage committee for two decades, she fought vigorously for the preservation ofthe city's past and railed against what she considered bad development.

"In older sections of a city with fine, old buildings, preservation and development are necessarily linked,"Mrs. Westaway-Palk wrote in 2005. "How that meeting of old and new is handled will make or break therevitalization process."

Mrs. Westaway-Palk died on July 3 at Stedman Community Hospice. She was 72.

Mrs. Westaway-Palk was born in Brantford and attended Brantford Collegiate Institute. Her family moved toParis, France, in 1954 when her father, a chemical engineer, was asked to set up a business there. Sheattended finishing school in Switzerland before moving back to Canada, where she studied English at McGillUniversity in Montreal, graduating with honour.

Following graduation, Mrs. Westaway-Palk married and lived in Toronto, Switzerland and Belgium. She hadtwo sons, Julian, born in Canada, and Stephen, born in Switzerland.

After divorcing, Mrs. Westaway- Palk returned to Canada with her sons. She continues her studies, this timein planning, and worked for the Region of Haldimand-Norfolk.

Julian said the happiest years of his mother's life may have been when she met her second husband, DouglasPalk, in the mid- 1970s and the family moved to California. The couple opened a bookstore that became "ahallmark" in Carmel, Calif., known for its extensive mystery section, said Julian.

Mrs. Westaway-Palk returned to Brantford, driving cross-country, following the 1986 death of her husband.

"She was a different kind of mom," said Julian. "Every other mom I knew as the housewife type. She wasvery passionate and adventurous, with an inquiring mind. She was always on the go.

"She was extremely loving and supportive in her own way."

Bill Darfler met Mrs. Westaway- Palk in 1980 when the Albion Street cottage he was living in at the timewas historically designated. Later, the two co-chaired the heritage committee and became neighbours on thesame block of William Street.

"Her passion was the shape of the city, the architecture, the way the city was built," said Darfler.

"She was loud and opinionated."

Mrs. Westaway-Palk also served on the city's brownfields community advisory committee, the board ofdirectors on the W. Ross Macdonald Memorial Foundation, and was involved in numerous projects for thecity's parks and recreation department.

City planner Matt Reniers said Mrs. Westaway-Palk's commitment to good urban design was connected toher grandfather who owned Cromar Construction and whose labour created many of the city's importantbuildings, including the Wellington Street land registry office, opened in 1910.

"It wasn't self interest," said Reniers of Mrs. Westaway-Palk's heritage work. "She just wanted Brantford tobe a good city to live in."

Maureen Sinclair, the city's director of parks and recreation, worked with Mrs. Westaway-Palk on severalprojects, including signs that now line the city's parks system describing local history. Mrs. Westaway-Palkwas also a member of the group of women who called themselves the weed warriors and volunteered to tendunsightly abandoned properties across the city.

Sinclair said Mrs. Westaway- Palk was so often at the parks and recreation office she became like a staffmember.

"Anne challenged you," Sinclair said. "But, by challenging us, she forced us to be better people."

An avid reader who operated Brant Avenue Books for six years, Mrs. Westaway-Palk's varied interestsextended beyond heritage and urban planning. She could speak astutely about science, gardening, nature, travel, cooking, even weather patterns.

"She was an incredibly intelligent person," said Darfler.

Mrs. Westaway-Palk was the first person Alannah McQuarrie met when she moved to the city 12 years ago.The pair shared a quirky sense of humour and an interest in good books.

So committed to aesthetics was Mrs. Westaway-Palk, said McQuarrie, that she had difficulty even travellingthrough parts of the city she considered unattractive.

"She loathed the north end where I lived," said McQuarrie with a laugh. "She would actually close her eyeswhen we drove past the mall."

Those standards extended beyond architecture, said McQuarrie. Mrs. Westaway-Palk would sometimesrefuse to display books in her store if she found the covers' design offensive.

Mrs. Westaway-Palk was a proponent of Jane Jacobs, a Canadian urbanist known for organizing grassrootsefforts to block urban-renewal projects that threaten to destroy local neighbourhoods. Annual Jane's Walksencourage Canadians to explore their communities. Darfler is organizing the first Anne's Walk, in honour ofMrs. Westaway-Palk, for next May.

Sinclair said other local groups are also considering ways to honour Mrs. Westaway-Palk.

"I will miss her very much, and I'm not alone," said Darfler. "She had quite an impact."

Mrs. Westaway-Palk is survived by her son, Julian and his wife, Marianne; son, Stephen; and grandchildrenLuke and Zach Philipp. She is also survived by sister, Janet Alderson-Smith and her husband Christopher.

Anne Whitlock Westaway was born in her beloved Brantford, Ontario June 12 1937 and she died there July3, 2009. She was the daughter of Frank Whitlock Westaway and his wife Marion Beatrice Cromar.Frank Whitlock Westaway was the grandson of Samuel Westaway and his wife Anne Brook Whitlock ofDevon, England, part of the WHITLOCK01 family.

ESME MARION (WHITELOCK) TROTTER (1915-2011)I receive a letter from Esme’s daughters to advise that Esme had passed away on February 10, 2011 atOrchard Manor in Kelowna, BC at the age of 95.

My first contact with Esme was in January 1976 when her name and address were passed on to my sisterNecia by Evelyn Whitelock of Vancouver. Esme was living in Virden, Manitoba at the time and had writtento Evelyn regarding the Whitelock family. Evelyn hoped our research into the Whitelock and Whitlockfamilies could be of help to Esme. Esme’s letter of January 8, 1976 began a correspondence that was tocontinue for 35 years!!

Esme’s family was from Scotland with connections back to Ireland. She had traced back to GeorgeWhitelock of County Armagh, Ireland who married Elizabeth Doyle in Barony, Lanark, Scotland in 1834.Unfortunately, while Esme’s research over the years added a lot of George’s descendants to theWHITLOCK26 family, we were never able to determine who George’s parents were and 35 years later thischart is still headed by the same couple Esme wrote to me about in 1976.

Esme wrote a short history of the Alexander Brown family, her mother’s family and sent copies to us all.The annual supplements to this history, kept us all up to date with Esme’s growing family and Esme’sChristmas Newsletters were also a great way to share information and preserve the family stories. She lovedto travel and the Christmas letters were also a way for Esme to share these adventures as well.

In 1986 Esme and Harvey attended the gathering of the Whitlocks who all traced their descent from Ireland. We met at my home in Port Coquitlam and as well as the Trotters there was Jean and Art Whitlock fromCranbrook, Cuma Schofield from North Fork, California and Pam Hallock from Washington. A mini IrishWhitlock reunion!!

Esme was very proud of her family and worked hard to preserve their story. I shall miss her.

BULLSTRODE WHITELOCKE K.C. OFAUSTRALIAVicky House recently sent me some interesting links to an Australian named Bullstrode Whitelocke. He isan octogenation Barrister-at-law from Mosman, Australia who has recently published the 3rd edition of hisbook Whitelocke: On Lawmanship a parody legal text book.

Mr. Whitelocke’s blogs and rap songs about the legal issues as well his irreverent humor single him out fromhis fellow legal beagles. Just his comments about the Australian democratic process make him someoneinteresting to watch.

Hopefully as more information is received we will determine how he fits into the Whitlock family and if heactually is connected in some way to his namesake Sir Bulstrode Whitelocke (1605-1675).

Check out his book and his blog at www.bullstrodewhitelocke.com

WILLIAM NELSON WHITLOCK (1833- )Brian Devine recently contacted me about some Civil War documents he had that are signed by Lt. W. N.Whitlock. Brian’s ancestor Lecil DeVine (Pvt 31 Alabama CSA) was a Confederate POW in 1864 whoenlisted with the 3rd US Volunteers at Rock Island Barracks. Brian mentions that Lecil served under theUnion Lt. Whitlock and was deployed to Ft. Leavenworth in Kansas and later to Ft. Kearney in Nebraska.

The march from Ft. Leavenworth to Ft. Kearney occurred in March 1865 and Lecil and his companyencountered bitter cold, high winds, and heavy snow falls. Firewood was scarce and they had greatdifficulty keeping warm, resulting in Lecil contracting rheumatic fever and a spinal inflamation.

Page 14

Family stories indicate that if it had not been for the grace and kindness of Lt. Whitlock, Lecil may not havesurvived his term of service in Nebraska. Brian’s father and the sole uncle (now 89) talk of the “oneness”that developed between these former enemies of the Blue and Grey to become “galvanized” as they werecalled. Lt. Whitlock was a “Yankee Officer” and had every reason to treat Lecil with great disdain. Yet, hechose to do the opposite and assisted him in every way he could.

Lecil’s family were non-slave holding dirt farmers who had moved from South Carolina to Alabama in the1840's. His service in the Confederate Army was a result of the Conscription Act of 1862 when he wasgiven the option of “joining” or abandoning his land and moving north across the Federal Line.

Brian’s goal was to let the Whitlocks know how tremendously grateful his family was for Lecil’s treatmentby Lt. Whitlock during a time when it would have been so easy to have acted quite differently.

In 1894 Lecil DeVine was applying for a pension and Lt. Whitlock completed affidavits that detail some ofthe events that occurred 30 years earlier.

In his affidavit Lt. Whitlock states: “in the month of March 1865 while on the march from Ft. LeavenworthKas to Ft. Kearney, Neb. The above named soldier was disabled while in the line of duty by great exposurefrom excessive cold, & stormy weather, causing Rhumatism, lung to spinal trouble. He was unfit for dutymost of the time during the rest of his term of service, & when we started back to Leavenworth in Nov. tomuster out of service he was not able to stand the march & had to be taken in one of the Co- wagons.

He was a sober, quiet man, a good soldier & always ready & willing to do all he was able.

I was with the command the last 60 miles of the above march & was in Command of Co. A. until musterout.”

From his home in Beatrice, Gage Co., Nebraska, In a second document dated April 11, 1894 Lt. Whitlockstates:

“Sir:

In reply to your request I have to state that Lecil Devine was a Private of Co. A. 3rd US Inft. Vols. of which Ihad command from about the middle of March 1865 to the 29th of Nov. 1865 (the time of muster out), Themarch from Ft. Leavonworth, Kas. To Ft. Kearney, Neb. was made in the latter part of Feb. & for part ofMarch 1865 during very inclement weather in fact almost a continuous blizzard. Devine was suffering fromRhumatism on arrival at Ft. Kearney & was excused from duty for some time. In May my Co. were detailedas a guard at the stations of the Overland Stage Co. Devine was stationed at one of the Posts & did dutymost of the time during the summer & fall but complained a good of his back.

On the march to Leavenworth for muster out he gave out & had to be hauled in one of the wagons.

Very respectfully
