• Often with a link to a website, blog or image

Who Gets Your Tweets?

Twitter users who:

•Have signed up to “follow” you, or

•Searched for terms you use in your

tweets, or•See forwarded copies of your

tweets (retweets) sent by people

they follow



Followers

How does someone follow you?

•They click a button on your Twitter home page

(or elsewhere) to receive your tweets to

whatever device they choose

•You do the same to follow them – go to their

Twitter home page, click the button



Searching for Tweets

Easy Search Mechanism Made Very Specific

with “Hashtags”• #

• #nursing, #hcr or #ACA, #CHL10

• Very useful for topic searches, conferences, Twitter chats, more

• Straightforward to use: Just include the hashtag somewhere in or at the end of the

Tweet. (It counts against your 140 character limit.)

• You don’t register hashtags; you just use them. Search first to see if a topic hashtagalready exists, and consider using that – #nursing or #hcr, for example. For a

conference or specific event, create one, but search first to be sure it’s not currently

in use for something you’d rather not be confused with!



Retweets

•Someone gets a tweet they want to share

with their own followers

•Hits the retweet button; it’s gone

•Abbreviate, even unconventionally.

Health = hlth

•Not cool to steal someone else’s

tweet; retweet instead•OK to trim for space

•Use @ to identify other Twitter

•Relies on # (hashtag)

•Some regularly scheduled; some

special events

•Must promote heavily

•Gather to discuss a particular topic,

someone moderates

•Great way to engage people in a topic,

provided you can reach critical mass ofparticipants



Live Tweeting

• Cover conferences or events with real-time tweets,

reporting on a speaker’s remarks, announcements, etc.• Announce in advance to your followers, others

• Use hashtag to make it easy to search



URL Shorteners

Use Twitter to drive traffic to website or blog• Use URL shorteners so the link doesn’t bust your 140-character limit

• Purpose is to get your message out, engage in dialogue,

promote materials

• Drive traffic to our Web site

• Share news

• “Cover” live events• Support other RWJF programs and grantees

• Gather feedback

But Remember…

• Important to be compelling, write interesting tweets, so

look for what catches your eye and ear.

• Your Twitter voice – formal vs. informal, substantive vs.

playful, whatever meets your communications needs.

• Clever is good (and often saves space). Tease the

reader to get them to click.

• Be accurate, but give up comprehensive.



Keep the Conversation Going

View Twitter as one of several venues

for a conversation• Read tweets from folks you follow

• Keep an eye out for direct messages, and reply

• Follow those who follow you, or at least find out who they are

and what they’re interested in and what they tweet• Connect Twitter to your other communications outlets
