Council says Oak Harbor mayor’s visit was not OKBy Megan HansenCo-Editor

Much to the chagrin of Coupeville Town Council, Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley publicly called for Bob Clay’s removal from the Island Transit Board last Tuesday.

His five-minute presentation during the council meeting’s public comment period was inappropriate and unnecessary, council mem-bers said.

Citing depleted resources, reduced services and negative cash flow balance, Dudley said Clay and the rest of the Island Transit Board have failed.

“Your representative has failed the coun-cil,” he said. “Your representative has failed the citizens of your town. Your representative has failed the citizens of Island County.”

Dudley made a similar presentation to the Langley City Council last week, asking them

The town is going to be hopping this Sat-urday with a variety of events for the Green-ing of Coupeville.

“It’s going to be a busy, busy day,” said Lynda Eccles, executive director for the Coupeville Chamber of Commerce.

The day begins 10 a.m. with the annual Jingle Trail 5K Run and Walk at Camp Casey and Fort Casey.

The 5K is for all ages. Cost is $25 with a t-shirt, $15 without.

Both bazaars run until 2 p.m. See the events calendar on page 7 for more informa-tion.

Neither an attempted coat snatching nor a mashed potato incident could damp-en the gluttonous spirit of Coupeville diners at its an-nual Community Potluck Thursday.

Per tradition, this year’s 16th annual Thanksgiving Day event drew approxi-mately 200 people who enjoyed food, friends and a touch of drama, according to volunteer Sandey Bran-don.

Around 1:30 p.m. Thurs-day, Marshall Rick Norrie responded to a call about a woman, presumed home-less, who had attempted to steal someone’s coat, ac-cording to Brandon.

-Brandon said the issue was quickly resolved.

The dinner also experi-enced its annual “mashed potato incident” when someone brought 16 pounds of it a little too late, provid-ing plenty of leftovers, ac-cording to Brandon.

She said the potluck ele-ment of it always lends itself to having too much or too little of something.

Still, “we had plenty of food and plenty of smiling faces,” Brandon said.

Adding a festive ele-ment to the dinner, planners added sparkling cider for visitors to enjoy this year with the 13 turkeys and eight hams served with all the fixings.

And despite the loss of

their volunteer dishwasher 15 years, the community re-sponded with the necessary manpower.

“It’s the volunteer spirit from the community that makes it happen,” Brandon said.

“It’s a great holiday tra-dition and people came and enjoyed themselves.”

The subtitle of the first chapter of Coupeville author Ardeth de Vries’ new book is, “This is a book about trans-formation.”

De Vries, who now owns five dogs, didn’t have any dogs growing up because her father was afraid of them.

She said the first part of her life, which included a 45-year teaching career, wasn’t focused on animals.

“The segment of my life where I was teaching was all about people,” de Vries said.

But since she retired and moved to Whidbey Island in 2005, it’s been all about dogs.

De Vries is the president of the board of directors of Old Dog Haven, a network of homes and shelters in West-ern Washington that gives senior dogs homes.

Her book, “Old Dog Ha-ven: Every Old Dog has a Story to Tell,” was a finalist in the 2014 USA Best Book Awards, Animals/Pets: Nar-rative Non-Fiction category.

De Vries will be talk-ing about Old Dog Haven and signing books at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, at the Coupeville Library. All pro-ceeds from book sales go to Old Dog Haven, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.

The organization began in late 2004 and has since given homes to more than 4,000 se-nior (8 years old and up) dogs via a network of more than 135 foster and Final Refuge homes.

According to de Vries’ book, the organization began when founders Judith and Lee Piper took in two dogs at the end of their lives. Word of their generosity spread out, shelters requested the Pipers take in old dogs and volun-teers began sending dona-tions.

In her book, de Vries ex-plains the concept of a Final Refuge home: “For the dogs that were not healthy enough or emotionally fit for adop-tion, the concept of Final

Refuge homes was born. Fi-nal Refuge homes offer hos-pice care for dogs that need one last secure home…”

And although taking care of ailing old dogs is expen-sive, Old Dog Haven takes care of all vet bills, which cur-rently means the organization pays $40,000 per month for veterinary fees.

De Vries said that old dogs have a hard time getting adopted because many peo-ple view them as expendable.

“The need to get these dogs homes has been driving the organization (Old Dog Haven,” she said.

“It’s just kind of an amaz-ing thing.”

In addition to being presi-dent of the board, de Vries writes the newsletters for the organization and offers coun-seling to dog owners who need to make end-of-life deci-sions for their pets.

De Vries said she gets 15-20 dog-mails a day from peo-ple looking for advice. She has also written articles that answer questions like, “How do you know when it’s time to let them go?” and “How do you grieve when your animal friend dies?”

But de Vries said, for her, “Watching a dog struggle to be well is harder than the grieving process after.”

She once provided short-term hospice care for a dog that only lived six hours after he came to de Vries.

“It was clear to me that I was that person in his life.”

De Vries said she focuses on the moment and doesn’t look ahead, anticipating when her dogs will die.

“Dogs live in the mo-ment,” de Vries said. “If it works for them, it works for me. If I can provide happy moments, that’s enough.”

De Vries said that’s a les-son she has learned from her animals.

“I’ve learned most of the important things in my life from dogs,” she said.

De Vries got the idea to write her book four years ago because she wanted to tell the stories of the dogs that have been adopted and the people who adopted them.

She said she went to Old Dog Haven founders, the Pipers, and said, “People need to know about the plight for senior dogs.”

It took four years to put

the book together.Thirty-four dogs made it

into the book because they were in scenarios that de Vries wanted to write about.

Scenarios included dogs who need new homes after their owner died, dogs who lost homes because their owners couldn’t afford to keep them, dogs who were found in puppy mills, dogs brought to shelters as strays, dogs whose owners move or no longer have time for them, dogs who have been neglected and are no longer wanted… The list goes on.

De Vries said that while “dogs tell great stories,” she

also wanted to tell the stories of the people who adopted them.

“I wanted their voices to be heard,” she said. “They’re the ones who gave these ex-pendable dogs a home.”

In the book, de Vries said all the dogs have one thing in common: “No one wants them. Their value in the eyes of others has diminished.”

But de Vries said that people all over the world rise to the occasion, especially because of Old Dog Haven’s website, which lists the dogs that need homes.

She said very few dogs come to Old Dog Haven healthy and desirable. They all have physical and/or emo-tional issues. De Vries said that she rarely knows much about the dogs’ histories and what they’ve gone through.

“My goal is to erase the bad memories,” she said. “They’re so trusting. These guys have very big hearts.”

De Vries has taken in more than 20 dogs — and those are just the schnauzers.

She said she somehow gets all the schnauzers.

“I must send out an en-ergy,” de Vries said.

In addition to four schnauzers, Lacy, Maggie, Cassie and Harper, de Vries has one shih tzu, Tanner, who is blind and 15 years old.

“They all came with bag-gage,” de Vries said.

But whenever she brings a new dog into her home, all the current ones are welcom-ing.

“They know the new kid needs to be here,” de Vries said. “They’re all such good kids.

“Once they come here, they stay here.”

Author shares love of old dogs, creating a haven

They may have money, but we have the votesEditor,

I was distressed to read the letter vilifying folks who didn’t vote - to be fair, many have been pummeled into a sense of hopelessness by the minions of the wealthy.

Rise up, throw off the feelings of helpless-ness! If you don’t vote, they win.

Take heart, and vow to do better next time! They may have the money, but we have the votes.

Appreciative of localsupport of SoroptimistEditor,

A big thank-you goes to Mark Laska at Ciao and his unbelievable staff for hosting our fourth annual Soroptimist International of Coupeville, Women & Wine event.

With a sold-out crowd in attendance, there was laughter and enjoyment, delicious food and wine all evening long.

We are so appreciative of businesses like Ciao, and our generous community, that support Soroptimist International of Coupe-ville and its projects and events.

It is amazing what we can accomplish to-gether for girls and women locally and glob-

ally. We hope you will save Nov. 18, 2015, for next year’s Women & Wine.

Looking forward toserving constituentsEditor,

Now that the November 2014 election results have been certified, I want to offi-cially thank the voters of Island County for electing me to the office of Island County treasurer. I will do my best to maintain your trust and respect in this important office of our local government.

The efforts of many people are responsi-ble for this win. I appreciate those who gave me advice, contributions, sign locations, la-bor, endorsements and the constant support and motivation necessary for any candidate involved in an election. I could not have suc-ceeded without your assistance and faith, and I will not forget what you offered to me.

For everyone in Island County who is glad to see the campaign signs down and to read no more letters to the editor about elec-tion issues, thank you for your patience and understanding during the past six months. I look forward to serving you at Island County.

The Whidbey Examiner welcomes letters to the editor. Letters express the views of their writers, not those of this newspaper or its employees.

Our first priority is to publish let-ters by local people that address lo-cal issues. We will publish letters on other subjects depending on available space.

Sign your letter and include your street address and daytime and eve-ning telephone numbers. Phone num-bers are used for verification only, and will not be published.

All letters are subject to editing for length, content, grammar and punctuation. Submissions may also be vetted for factual errors. Letters must be submitted by 5 p.m. Monday to be considered for publication on Thursday.

We strive to print all letters we receive, but publication is not guar-anteed. Shorter letters of 250 words or less have a better chance of getting into print.

Members of the Coupeville Town Council didn’t exactly stand up to Oak Harbor Mayor Scott Dudley last week.

True to his word, Dudley showed up at the council meeting to urge the mem-bers to boot their colleague, Councilman Bob Clay, from the Island Transit board of directors. He argues that a complete turnover is needed on the board of the troubled agency, which has sizable finan-cial and public-relations troubles.

Clay and the other council members waited until the end of the meeting, af-ter Dudley and his posse were gone, to criticize him for his Oak Harbor-style chutzpah. They all seemed to agree that Dudley’s actions were inappropriate. Clay called him a bully.

They were right. It’s simply not Dudley’s place to tell

elected officials in another municipality how to do their jobs. Dudley himself has been criticized by Oak Harbor council members for wasting money by unwisely firing people.

You didn’t see Coupeville officials showing up to criticize Dudley.

And yet, Dudley represents a lot of people in the community who are under-standably alarmed by what has happened at the agency. He has some good points, though his message is obscured by his confrontational technique.

It all made for great theatrics. But it also diverts much-needed attention from the real issue at hand, which is guiding the vital agency securely on the road to recovery.

The members of the Coupeville council must decide for themselves what — and who — is best for the agency.

Neither politics nor personalities should enter into the equation.

You know what I enjoy most about holiday season on the Rock? Wherever I go, it’s as if the last 50 years never happened.

Soon, we’ll see those hand-painted snow-men along Main Street in Coupeville, made out of good, Northwest plywood.

They aren’t animatronic and they don’t sing “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town.” How refreshing!

We’ll see only a few outdoor light displays that

require software and a digi-tal sound board to control their coordinated blinking and blaring.

Those will likely be the handiwork of new arrivals from America who don’t know any better.

On the Rock, we like our holiday decorations simple and unamplified. Just a few strings of outdoor lights with colored bulbs — not all clear white and no twin-kling, please.

Last year, I actually witnessed a Rock dweller stringing tinsel on her tree.

Of course it was vinyl, not the aluminum kind I knew as a kid, and it was probably made in China from recycled TVs and cell phones.

But it was still tinsel, and she was putting it on strand by strand. It made me day-dream that Eisenhower

might still be president.

This Saturday, Dec. 6, we’ll celebrate a real holi-day tradition on the Rock.

It’s time for the an-nual holiday bazaar and luncheon at the Coupeville United Methodist Church. I doubt that the merchandise and the menu have changed much since 1955.

Hopefully, we’ll dine as always on their famous chicken and green bean cas-serole topped with buttery bread crumbs, Jell-O salad with chopped cranberries and walnuts, and a soft dinner roll that will be un-French or not at all crusty.

For dessert there should be a choice of homemade pie, followed by a cup of hot tea from a pot covered by a hand-knit cozy.

If I close my eyes, I may remember when all I want-

ed for Christmas was my two front teeth.

Then will come one of the true joys of the holiday season on the Rock.

That would be shopping for unique “from Whidbey” gifts to send to friends and relatives back in America.

And that means scour-ing church bazaars, holiday markets, boutiques, gift shops, galleries, wood carv-ers, painters, potters and purveyors of local food products.

Among the treasures I bought last year were these: a loaf of pumpkin-cider bread baked by the Coupe-ville Methodist ladies; a hand-knit toaster cozy, also from the Methodist ladies; a wreath made out of bird seed; a lavender sachet to keep your sock drawer from smelling; a half dozen pieces of lefse from the Lu-

theran church ladies that I sent to my Texas friends, who mistook them for tor-tillas; two potholders made out of the Swedish flag; and a barometer mounted on a hand-carved cedar branch that fell across a power line last winter.

How Whidbey can you get?

The one thing you really don’t want to do, howev-er, is give a “from Whid-bey” gift to another Rock dweller.

Their homes are as lit-tered with that stuff as yours is, and they don’t need any more.

Better to give them something they may really want.

A visit to a tanning booth, perhaps. Or a gift card from Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods.

Happy Rockin’ holidays!

to replace Councilman Jim Sundberg on the board.

He also publicly said that he’s going to also speak to the Board of Island County Commissioners next month and ask them to remove Commissioner Helen Price Johnson.

Dudley told the council that, as elected officials, they need to take their obligations seriously by asking questions and requesting documents.

Bob Clay, a longtime Coupeville town council-member, has served on the Is-land Transit board for about

11 years.Dudley pointed out that

the Oak Harbor City Council appointed him to the board in September to replace its representative, Jim Campbell.

“It’s time for a change in the entire management,” he said.

“The other three (board members) need to go along with him.”

Resident Jeff Lauderdale also spoke in support of Dud-ley’s assertions.

He asked the council to consider reshuffling commit-tee appointments and give another council member an opportunity to serve with Is-

land Transit.“Bob Clay needs to step

down,” Lauderdale said.Town Council remained

silent during Dudley’s and Lauderdale’s comments, with only Mayor Nancy Conard responding.

She thanked them for their input and said the coun-cil would take comments into consideration when consider-ing appointments in the com-ing months.

It wasn’t until the end of the meeting and after Dudley had already left that Clay re-sponded.

“I’ve never had a fellow elected official come and give

a presentation to say I haven’t done a good job,” Clay said.

He went on to say the in-formation Dudley presented was taken out of context and presented unfairly.

“He’s not really trying to solve problems,” Clay said. “I’m not sure what he’s doing.

“He’s a bully,” he added.Knowing Dudley had

publicly announced he would be attending the meeting, Clay came prepared with transit financial documents to share with the council.

This month, transit has more than $724,000 in avail-able working cash, he said.

“We are on target with

what our recovery plan was,” he said.

By the end of 2015, Clay said the board anticipates have an ending working cash balance of $844,000 and plans move $525,000 into re-serves.

“This is a balanced bud-get,” he said.

“It’s doable.”The other council mem-

bers, with the exception of Diane Binder, who was ex-cused, thanked Clay for shar-ing the financial information.

Councilwoman Pat Pow-ell said she was offended by Dudley’s presentation and was sorry he came.

Councilwomen Jack-ie Henderson and Molly Hughes agreed they felt Dud-ley’s presentation was inap-propriate.

“And who was he here representing?” Hughes asked.

“He didn’t say one thing we can do to move forward.”

Clay added that Dudley himself actually went to his council and asked to be ap-pointed to the transit board.

“When Scott took this position he started making requests for public records,” Clay said.

“He’s made 84 individual requests.”

Requests included hun-dreds of page documents to the invoices for refrigera-tors purchased for the new building and everything in between, he said.

“Sometimes he’s asked for things twice after he already received the document,” he said.

and beer garden, which was man-aged by the Coupeville Chamber of Commerce.

The total also includes four $1,500 student scholarships, which will be given out in May.

The deadline to apply for a scholarship is in April.

More than a dozen grants were given out Monday to a variety of special interest and nonprofit groups in Central Whidbey.

Rick Castellano from the Island County Historical Museum ac-cepted a grant which will help the museum continue with its project to digitize its archives.

Castellano estimates there are about 18,000 items to digitize.

“Someday those will be online and this will get us closer,” Castel-lano said. “I thank you so much.”

Lee Roof accepted a grant to support his giant pumpkin contest, which is held every October dur-ing Harvest Fest, and Lisa Root accepted a grant to help pay for signage for the Whidbey Island Kite Festival.

The Pacific Rim Institute ac-cepted a grant to help cover the cost of cleaning up the property off Parker Road.

Vickie Chambers from the Coupeville Historic Waterfront As-sociation accepted two grants — one to help pay for hanging baskets on Front Street and the other to help with a new program to raise funds for the Coupeville Wharf.

Lisa Bernhardt from the Pacific Northwest Art School accepted a grant to help purchase equipment like a portable demonstration mir-ror and fabric steamer for its fiber arts program.

The Festival Association helped start the art school with the original seed money, and it continues to sup-port the school with other grants.

“I feel like the festival is the par-ent to the art school,” Bernhardt said. “We are deeply grateful for ev-erything you do in the community.”

John Luvera, who heads the juvenile detention education pro-gram through Coupeville schools, accepted a second grant for arts programing.

The first grant, he said, paid for

canvas, art supplies and wood for easels.

Students created acrylic paint-ings of scenes of Whidbey Island. They now hang in county offices.

“It’s a time they get to relax and enjoy,” Luvera said.

This second grant will go to re-plenish supplies.

Other grants went to support the chamber’s Memorial Day Parade, Coupeville Boys and Girls Club art programs, WSU Beachwatchers’ educational displays at the wharf,

children and teen programs at the library, Penn Cove Water Festi-val youth activities, for signage at the Haller House, the History Day program at Coupeville High School and the Young Author’s Program at the elementary school.

Prep Preview Coupeville High School 2014-15

By Jim WallerStaff Reporter

The Coupeville High School basketball teams opened the season this week with aim on a February tar-get -- postseason play.

The girls qualified for the district tournament last sea-son, now it is focusing on a spot in the state tournament.

The boys, who missed out on district action the past few seasons, is primed to grab a berth this winter.

Girls BasketballVeteran team plans to build on success of last year’s squad

Youth is no longer a con-cern for the Coupeville High School girls basketball team.

The Wolves return seven letter winners, including six seniors, from last winter’s team which finished 10-13 and came within one game of qualifying for the tri-district tournament.

The returnees include seniors Kacie Kiel, 5-7 wing; Maddi Strasburg, 5-5 point guard, Hailey Hammer, 5-8 post; Julia Myers, 5-10 post; Monica Vidoni, 6-0 post; and Wynter Thorne, 5-8 wing; and junior Makana Stone, 5-11 post/wing.

Stone received first-team, all-league honors last winter.

The Wolves will be buoyed by having Hammer back after missing much of last year with an injury, coach David King said. In addition, Myers, coming off a successful soccer season and a full year of varsity basket-ball action “has brought an increased confidence in her

game.”Others expected to con-

tribute, according to King, are junior McKenzie Bailey, a 5-4 wing, and freshman Mia Littlejohn, a 5-4 point guard.

The Wolves lost only two players to graduation, but the pair, Bree Messner and Amanda Fabrizi, were the

team leaders.King said their loss will be

felt but Kiel, Stone and Stras-burg have filled the void: “I think we are in good hands.”

Obviously, basketball ex-perience is one of the squad’s strengths.

That experience was bol-stered by off-season work, King said. Stone played on a club team that traveled to tournaments in Illinois and Tennessee; others spent hours in the gym and at team camp to improve.

He pointed out that the seven letter winners compet-ed at district last season and four played in a state tourna-ment in another sport.

“This group understands what it takes to put in the time and effort to make the playoffs and/or going to state,” he said. “Adding McKenzie and Mia to the group solidifies our team.

“The team chemistry is great. Each player encourag-es their teammates. They also push each other to get better, and each one has the same goal, to compete and play as a team.”

King also likes his team’s speed, height and athleticism.

He added, “I like what I am seeing so far on the de-fensive end and the effort the players are giving every day.”

He said that one of the team’s strengths — ath-leticism — is also one of its

weaknesses: “At times we try and play by only relying on our athletic ability; in the past this has gotten us in trouble.”

The team has high expec-tations, King said, aiming for the playoffs and a state berth. The Wolves face a tough non-league schedule which should prepare them for their first season in the Olympic League, he added.

King believes Coupeville has what it takes to reach its goals.

“They do not quit,” he said. “They are competitive and understand what it takes to be a successful team. They will put the time in to im-prove their individual skills and that of the teams.

“Our basketball IQ is ris-ing, which allows us to go out and just play basketball instead of having to think through the process.”

Boys BasketballCoupeville ready to climb up standings and into playoffs

They paid their dues, now it is time to collect.

The Coupeville High School boys basketball team struggled to pick up wins the past three seasons. Young players were forced into var-sity action before they were ready because of the lack of talent among the older play-ers, and the results were pre-dictable.

The Wolves were winless in 2011-12, picked up one win in 2012-13 and earned two

wins last season.“This is the year we turn

the corner,” coach Anthony Smith said. “It is a testimony to the boys, to their dedica-tion and hard work. Several years ago two or three kids would show up to open gyms; now we get 20. We are ready to compete.”

Leading the resurgence are seniors Aaron Trumbull, Joel Walstad, Matt Shank and Aaron Curtin.

Curtin returns after miss-ing last season; he lettered as a freshman and sophomore.

Junior Wiley Hesselgrave, who Smith called one of the most athletic players in the conference, also lettered last winter.

Key newcomers, Smith said, are Gabe Wynn, Dalton Martin, C.J. Smith, Rison Johnson, Jared Helmstadter and Ryan Griggs.

Unlike past years, the Wolves have depth.

“We are somewhat deep,” Smith said. “We have strong backups for some players; there’s not much of a drop off.”

The depth also helps the Wolves improve in practice when the reserves are pushing

the starters for playing time, he added.

For the Wolves to suc-ceed, Smith said, they will have to play good defense.

“Our stable is going to be playing strong defense, which will open up the offense,” he said. “We plan to get up the floor.”

Turnovers have hurt Coupeville the past few sea-sons, so “taking care of the ball” is another necessity for a winning season, Smith said.

Smith said that qualifying for the state tournament is a reasonable goal and would be a great send-off gift for the seniors.

“It would be good for my seniors to have a winning season because they have worked so hard,” he added.

Coupeville jumps into play with five games in eight days.

The Wolves played Me-ridian Monday and South Whidbey Tuesday. For details of those games, visit www.whidbeyexaminer.com/sports

Coupeville hosts Dar-rington at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, and Bellevue Chris-tian at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, and then travels to Mount

Baker at 7:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8.

CheerSmall squad lend big support to Coupeville teams

Looking ahead to the winter season, Coupeville High School cheer coach Cheridan Eck said, “We may have a smaller team but we will pack a big punch.”

Six girls — Camilla Rische, Elizabeth Bishop, Ciera St. Onge, Cassidy Rydell, Jovanah Foote and Payton Wilson — form this season’s team. The fall squad included 22 members.

“This will be a different season for us due to the fact we are in a 1A League and we are not doing as many games,” Eck said. “We plan on doing some fun halftime routines which will include some hats, basketballs at times -- just a little bit of fun.”

Also scheduled is the an-nual junior cheer camp, cul-minating with a performance at the Friday, Feb. 6, basket-ball game.

NOTICEWashington State law requires wood sellers to provide an invoice (re- ceipt) that shows the s e l l e r ’s a n d bu ye r ’s name and address and the date delivered. The invoice should also state the price, the quantity delivered and the quan- tity upon which the price is based. There should be a statement on the type and quality of the wood. When you buy firewood write the seller’s phone number and the license plate number of the de- livery vehicle. The legal measure for firewood in Washington is the cord or a fraction of a cord. Estimate a cord by v isual iz ing a four-foot by eight-foot space filled with wood to a height of four feet .
