When and Why
Reasons for which asbestos was so widely used in Europe,
particularly between 1945 and 1990:
- Fibers extracted from a natural rock
- High resistance to fire and heat
- Good thermal and acoustic insulation
- High elasticity
- High mechanical resistance
- High resistance to chemicals
- High resistance to degradation
- Ease of mixing with composite materials such as cement or resins.

Major forms of use
ASBESTOS HEAVILY CROWDED :
- Cement products in civil construction and other civil engineering works:
Facades, corrugated plate, plumbing system, molds
- Mixture of asbestos with resin:
Brake pads
- Mixture of asbestos with rubber:
Sealants

Major forms of use
ASBESTOS WEAKLY AGGLOMERATED:
- Material for thermal insulation and fire protection. :
Flocking process
PURE ASBESTOS:
Ropes, textiles, filler materials.

Article 4.º - Characterization and inventory
High probability of liberation fibers through:
• Mechanical shocks
• Vibrations
• Air movements
Low probability of liberation fibers.
Liberation of fibers just under degradation effect or submitted to a mechanical action.
