With its lush green grass and spectacular views of the ocean and mountains, this field is quite of sight! Carr’s Bay Historical Site (Carr’s Bay) You will find remains of a fort, with several cannons pointing out at sea in the direction of Redonda. Garibaldi Hill Garibaldi Hill provides a contrasting view of the lush greenery of Salem, Old Towne and surrounding areas with bird’s eye view of the grey, hidden city, Plymouth and other vistas to the south. During heavy rainfall or high volcanic activity, visitors are advised not to cross the Belham Valley. It is managed by Montserrat National Trust. Plymouth – Buried City Plymouth, the capital, is buried deep in ash and volcanic debris including boulders up to the size of houses that previously stood there. The once thriving business and commercial centre of the island now resembles a dust-covered lunar landscape through which deep canyons have been gouged. Runaway Ghaut (Woodlands) Montserrat’s ghauts (pronounced: “guts”) are deep ravines that carry rainwater down from the mountains to the sea. Legend has it that people drinking the cool spring water flowing to the drinking fountain at Runaway Ghaut will be drawn to return to Montserrat, again and again. The Centre Hills The Centre Hills have many world class hiking trails which take you deep into the lush, unspoiled forest where a dazzling array of plants and animals can be found. Look out for the Montserrat Oriole (bird) and Galliwasp (half snake/half lizard) which can be found nowhere else in the world. You can apply for this at your port of entry or at the Police Headquarters at Brades or in Salem. The cost is EC$50 (US$19) and you will need to produce your valid driver’s license from your country of origin. DRIVING TIPS DRIVING IS ON THE LEFT A honk of a horn is usually a warning, or an “excuse me here I come”, but it is often a “hello” to a passing friend. Never drive a motor vehicle without first obtaining a Visitor’s Temporary driver’s license. When someone flashes their lights at you when you are at a junction it usually means ‘after you”. At a roundabout you must give way to traffic approaching from your right, unless told otherwise by road signs or a police officer. Roads are steep and winding in certain places so be cautious around bends. Locals are usually accomodating to visitors, so if confused with directions feel free to ask a passerby. DRIVER’S LICENSE
A local driver’s license is nescessary if you plan to drive in Montserrat. You can apply for this at your port of entry or at the Police Headquarters at Brades or in Salem. The cost is EC$50 (US$19) and you will need to produce your valid driver’s license from your country of origin.
DRIVING TIPS
DRIVING IS ON THE LEFTA honk of a horn is usually a warning, or an “excuse me here I come”, but it is often a “hello” to a passing friend.
Never drive a motor vehicle without first obtaining a Visitor’s Temporary driver’s license.
When someone flashes their lights at you when you are at a junction it usually means ‘after you”.
At a roundabout you must give way to traffic approaching from your right, unless told otherwise by road signs or a police officer.
Roads are steep and winding in certain places so be cautious around bends.
Locals are usually accomodating to visitors, so if confused with directions feel free to ask a passerby.
If you are involved in an accident, report the matter to the police station immediately or call 999.
