MISSIONTo translate the principles of the YMCA’s Christian heritage into programs that nurture children, strengthen families, build strong communities and develop healthy minds, bodies and spirits for all.

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENTI’ve been with the Y for more than 30 years, and the impact the Y has had on the people we serve continues to impress and inspire me.

Recently, I witnessed a moment at my local Y that says it all. Waiting in the parking lot for my wife, I watched through the front doors as a group of seniors talked in the lobby. In no hurry to get anywhere in particular, they chatted and enjoyed each other’s company. A young family, heading out after swim lessons, stopped to say hello. Even at a distance, it was clear the little girl was regaling them all with a story of something she’d learned in the pool. Soon, the family left and the group disbanded, heading their separate ways into the night. I realized that the older folks had never ventured past the lobby further into the facility. On this one evening, they’d come just for conversation and companionship.

Interactions like these happen all the time at Ys across the U.S. They define our vision for the new Haverford Township Area YMCA—a community center that cultivates and nurtures health and well-being, not only through programs and services but also during those cross-generational moments in the common spaces.

The Y is well positioned to make this vision a reality. Nationally, we’ve been successfully strengthening individuals, families and communities since 1851, and the YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity has been a strong presence in this region for well over a century. Every day, people’s lives are transformed by experiences they have in Y branches.

We are committed to making the new Haverford Y the best it can be. To do so, we need your support. Join us in the campaign for the Haverford Township Area YMCA. Open the door to the life-changing moments that happen at the Y.

Sincerely,

John F. FlynnPresident & CEOYMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity

WHERE COMMUNITY THRIVES

Lisa, 32, lost custody of her daughter after drugs ravaged her life. By participating in Y activities during weekly custody visits, Lisa rebuilt their relationship.

The YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity dates back to 1854, when George H. Stuart, a prominent businessman, founded the Y to reach “neglected youth not likely to be brought under any moral influence by any other means.” Throughout the years, the Y has adapted and responded to the changing needs of the communities we serve.

Suzie, 14, had an awesome summer learning to swim at the Y Summer Camp. Our financial assistance program helped her mother afford the experience, one that had a lasting effect on Suzie’s self-confidence.

Today, the YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity includes 11 locations and approximately 71 program sites. We serve more than 140,000 individuals in Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties.

Ann, 81, swims at the Y every day. It keeps her mind off the loss of her husband, who passed away recently, after a long and happy marriage.

The Y is unique. There’s no other nonprofit quite like it. For nearly 160 years, we have impacted lives across the U.S. In and of the community, we deliver long-lasting personal and social change through programs that keep kids safe and engaged, help people become and stay healthy and support neighbors who’ve fallen on hard times.

In small towns and big cities, farm communities and suburban neighborhoods, the Y empowers people to grow, learn and thrive at any age. From infant swims to tween nights, older adult exercise to adult literacy classes, our programs build healthy, confident, connected and secure individuals, families and communities.

Thomas, 23, works at his local Y to help keep kids off the street and away from gangs. It’s his way of making a difference in his community.

Across the U.S., 9 million children and 12 million adults in 10,000 communities feel our impact. Our 2,686 Ys exist for people of every economic status.

Y PROGRAMS & SERVICESThe Y knows that investing in our kids, our health and our neighbors results in strong communities. We focus our work in the following three areas:

McKinley Grimes was a man on a mission when he joined the Columbia North YMCA in 2006. Suffering from complications of diabetes, McKinley was determined to change his lifestyle to control the disease. He began working out in the Wellness Center to improve his strength and swimming to develop cardiovascular fitness. Soon, he lost weight and was a daily fixture at the Y.

In 2007, a diagnosis of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma derailed McKinley’s mission. He relinquished his membership at the Y to focus on treatment and recovery.

Now in remission, McKinley is back at the Y, swimming and lifting weights. “As hard as things got, I knew I’d be back,” he says.

“This place has given me so much.”

Youth DevelopmentWe believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Through the Y, millions of children cultivate values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement.

Healthy LivingIn communities across the nation, the Y is a leading voice on health and well-being. We bring families closer together, encourage healthy lifestyles and foster connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests.

Social ResponsibilityWhether developing skills or emotional well-being through education and training, welcoming and connecting diverse demographic populations through global services or preventing chronic disease and building healthier communities through collaborations with policymakers, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve.

WHERE OPPORTUNITIES EXIST In 2007, the YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity saw an opportunity to open a new branch. Across the region, membership was growing, and the demand for Y services outweighed our capacity to provide them. We began looking for a location strategically placed to impact the most people. After conducting a feasibility study of 17 potential communities, Haverford Township emerged as the leader.

THE NEEDHaverford Township is a close-knit community of families. Some are young and just starting out; others are more settled, with multiple generations living within blocks of each other. It’s a community like countless others: hardworking, neither extremely rich nor poor, and committed to family and neighbors.

Yet, the township lacks a safe, centrally located hub where families can gather year-round. Pools, though plentiful during the summer, are inaccessible in winter. For-profit fitness centers exist for adults but don’t provide appropriate programs for preschoolers, teens and families. Other organizations host only piecemeal youth and senior activities. No one organization does it all.

When the YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity identified a need for a community center in the township, we assessed what residents want most in such a facility. A survey of 400 people indicated a widespread desire for a safe, convenient location where they’d find quality family-friendly programs and facilities.

The priority interests of those surveyed include fitness equipment and classes and indoor pools; fun, skill-building and leadership-developing activities for kids and families; and social and exercise programs for seniors. When asked whether they’d join a Y that directly serves Haverford Township, the majority indicated they would.

We know a tremendous need exists in Haverford Township for everything the Y represents and provides. Now is our time to meet it.

THE SOLUTION In the heart of Haverford Township looms the old Swell Bubble Gum Factory campus, dormant since it closed in 2003. Designated a Superfund site by the Environmental Protection Agency, the decrepit property is currently a health hazard. The township acquired it through eminent domain in 2008. A year later, the YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity entered into a long-term lease with the township and agreed to demolish the building and clean up the site.

This parcel of land will be home to the Haverford Township Area YMCA. A win/win for everyone, the township gains a community center, a Superfund site is cleared and the Y increases its reach.

The demolition of the factory began in early 2011. Today, township residents and community leaders eagerly await the 2013 building dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new Y.

THE IMPACTThe new Y will serve some 20,000 area residents, nearly 4,000 households. Its social and economic impact on Haverford Township will include:

• Job Opportunities: The Y will bring 150 new permanent jobs to the township. We hire from within the community first and will offer a wide range of positions for all education levels. Additionally, the project’s development will create 250 construction jobs.

• Increased Spending: With these jobs will come increased spending in the community. The Y, which seeks to engage community-based service providers whenever possible, will support local businesses. Staff members, who live in the township, will spend their salaries at stores and restaurants in their vicinity.

• Improved Quality of Life: The new Y will improve the quality of life for individuals and the community at large. Programs designed to promote positive youth development, healthy living and social responsibility will result in safer and healthier people and neighborhoods.

• Diverse Community: The Y never turns anyone away due to an inability to pay. Throughout the region, 1-in-4 people we serve receive financial assistance. In 2009 alone, we provided more than $3 million in financial assistance. Haverford Township members will have access to the same support.

“You can’t have too many Ys. Every community needs a place that brings people together and emphasizes healthy living and neighborly support. Having a Y in Haverford Township will create multiple social and fitness opportunities for all ages and income levels. Only the Y offers exercise, educational and family activities in a community-focused environment.”

Phil Goldsmith, Former Managing Director of the City of Philadelphia, Haverford Township resident, Main Line YMCA member and group cycling instructor

WHERE POTENTIAL TRANSFORMS

07

This site of the old Swell Bubble Gum factory on Eagle Road will soon be a vibrant new Y branch.

“Haverford Township is very community minded. Recreational and fitness programs and events are a favorite family activity for many residents. A facility with diverse offerings, such as this Y, will tie us together even more and serve as a strong anchor for individuals and businesses. The location is perfect. At the very center of the township, it’s within walking distance of many neighborhoods. Right now the property is an eyesore, and the Y redevelopment will completely transform it. Haverford residents are clamoring for this Y and all it will bring to the community.”

“Right now there is nowhere in our area that can offer everything a Y does. The Y is the only place where we can use one membership for activities for the whole family. As the mother of an infant, I look forward to starting her in the swim program and having her grow up with memories of Y experiences. When I was a kid, the Y helped instill the important sustaining values of goal setting, hard work and dedication in me, and I want that for my daughter as well. We can’t wait for it to open in our neighborhood!”

At 13, Tara was more interested in hanging out with her friends than anything else. Her mother, a single mom, needed help and joined the Christian Street YMCA.

Tara started swimming for fun. Over time, she got to know the staff. With the lifeguards’ encouragement, she became more serious about swimming, practicing daily. Financial assistance from the Y enabled her to enroll in the lifeguarding certification course. She became a lifeguard. Yet her mother remained a bit worried that Tara’s focus around the pool might just be her friends. Tara reassured her. “It’s not like that,” she explained.

“When I’m lifeguarding, I’m responsible for people’s lives. Parents trust me with their kids.”

Today, Tara’s attitudes toward school, home and work have changed. “It’s wonderful to watch her grow, learn new skills and show pride in her work and health,” says her mother. “Her favorite place to be is the Y.”
