Where I'm From
I am from the colored pitchers in the window, from Cheerios and Craftsman tools.
I am from the clearing in the woods--hidden and safe.I am from the wild geraniums and Dutchman's britches,
the daffodils transplanted from the Wallace farm.I am from quiet times and Sunday dinners, from both wild and reserved--
from Mary and Faith and Grace.I am from the hermits and storytellers.
From special peanuts and no singing at the dinner table.I am from gingerbread houses and neighborhood Easter egg hunts--
agnostic celebrations of Christian holidays.I am from the Wisconsin and northern Europe, rugula and Yorkshire
pudding.From scrabble tiles placed in various places, spelling things like
"perspective" and "read" and “dream”;
the screech of the tablesaw and startling air compressor--hearing blues only in short intervals;
from the mobile dancing above the woodstove and living room foot "bicycle"
turned violent among sisters.I am from the unorganized wooden box of photos and the generations of
books on the shelves, giving me words and images that both comfort and inspire.
