Is a University the only place I can take a degree?

No, you can also go to a higher education college or a college of further education. Colleges of higher and further education offer degree courses validated by universities, as they do not usually have their own degree awarding powers. So they will be of the same standard. This means that you have a huge choice of colleges, locations and learning environments.

Checklist: Choosing the right institution

• Is the higher education institute large enough (or small enough) to have the facilities you would like? What does it do about student support? • Is it in a city or the countryside? Where in the UK is it? Does this matter to you? • Is it on a campus or not? Does that matter to you? • Is it close to any relatives or friends you have in the UK? • Is it close to an airport that you could use to get home? • Do you like the way it assesses work - by coursework, written exams or both? • It’s most recent review by the Quality Assurance Agency generally satisfactory? • Can you afford the course fees? • How much university accommodation is on offer, and what is its range? Are you given any guarantees about accommodation in the first and final years as an overseas student? • Can you afford to live in this town or city?

Choosing your degree programme and institution

A United Kingdom (UK) degree carries prestige throughout the world. In coming to the UK to study, you will also be surrounded by native speakers of the international language of business and commerce. The possibilities of where and how you study are endless. You can choose from literally thousands of courses in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. You can be sure of their quality because there is a strict system of quality assurance.

Checklist: Why study a degree course in the United Kingdom? • More intensive, shorter, degree courses will save you time and money in gaining a high-quality education • Tight controls are kept on the quality of education and standard of degrees • There are a huge range of courses and places in which to study, enabling you to choose the type of institution and location you prefer • If you are not at the right level to enter a UK degree there are a wide range of access, foundation and bridging courses you can choose from • Attending a Scottish university (many of which have four year degree courses) could mean that you do not have to take a foundation course • The opportunity to improve your fluency in English will improve your job prospects and help both you and your employer develop international links. • The UK is at the forefront of scientific and creative innovation and you could learn alongside some of the world’s top intellects, providing an excellent atmosphere for study • It is easy to apply through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) www.ucas.com which lets you apply to five institutions on one form. What do I need to think about? Start to choose a course and preferred institution There are so many degrees and so many places to study that choosing a course and institution can be difficult. You may have a personal pref-erence, for your own reasons, but if you are starting with only a vague idea, put the questions in the checklists below next to the institutions you pick out.

• Is the subject right for you? What type of degree is it? What are the options with the subject? • Does it improve your chances of following your chosen career? • Will it be recognised by employers or educational organisations in your own country? This is particularly important. • What are the teaching methods? Are you happy with them? • How did the department fare in the most recent QAA where education institutions define academic standards and quality for external review? • How is the degree programme assessed? Would you prefer continuous assessment or a more exam-based programme?

At some of the Scottish universities, a first degree in Arts carries the award of Master of Arts (MA). Most first degrees take three or four years to complete, though some professional courses, such as architecture, dentistry,medicine and veterinary science, can take between five and seven years.

Master awards

in engineering, science and mathematics (MEng, MSci, MPhys, MChem) can have direct entry from secondary education. These are increasingly becoming the standard for those who want careers as professional engineers or scientists. These integrated masters degrees take four years. In the first year students follow a Bachelor degree syllabus but if they attain high grades they may get the opportunity to follow an integrated Bachelor/Masters level syllabus in their third and fourth years.

Can I compare universities and colleges?

Yes. There are a number of ways by comparing the content of different courses. Courses do vary considerably from different universities and colleges. Check individual prospectuses available via www.educationuk.org. (I) By looking at external reviewsThe power to award degrees is regulated by law. It is illegal for an institution to offer to award a UK degree without proper authorisation. To see which universities and colleges offer courses leading to recognised UK degrees go to http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk What guarantees are there on the quality of degreesand teaching?The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) is responsible for regulating standards and quality for UK higher education. It produces a Code of Practice which provides the institutions with guidelines on how they should manage academic standards and quality. As well as setting standard guidelines the QAA also carries out inspections of institutions to see if they are reaching these targets. These QAA inspections are called ‘Institutional Audits’ and the reports are published on their website at http://www.qaa.ac.uk (II) By looking at the unofficial rankings compiled by various publications.This includes The Times newspaper (http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/public/gug/) which ranks by institution and subject, and The Guardian newspaper (http://www.guardian.co.uk/education/universityguide), which ranks by subject. Both of these unofficial rankings are compiled by pulling together information from various official sources. These different types of information are not designed to be added together and averaged to give an overall mark and so you need to be cautious when using these rankings. (III) By checking that professional courses are recognised in your own country and knowing that the education system is different to what you are used to. You can expect: • Lectures in large groups - one or two per week for each course in the degree programme. • You could take four or five different subjects at the same time. • It has a more personal focus than many education systems. • Seminars and tutorials - small groups, led by a lecturer or professor, to which each student is expected to contribute. • In science, technical and engineering subjects, a lot of your time will be spent in supervised laboratory work. • You will have a course tutor who will advise you individually on your course work, and a personal tutor who is there to give you further advice and support. • More emphasis is given to independent work and the development of self-study skills than in many other systems. There is seldom a single text-book for a course which the lecturer will rigidly follow and you will be expected to read widely around your subject and to find and analyse relevant material for yourself.

What qualification will I need?

Entry requirements for UK undergraduate study The qualifications you need depend on the course you want to study. You should have completed at least 13 years of education in your own country or in the UK, and have taken pre-university qualifications equivalent to UK A-levels, Scottish Highers or National Diplomas. If you haven’t got these qualifications yet don’t worry – you can still study in the UK. Try searching for a career-based or pre-university course in the course finder.

Here are some examples of the qualificationsthat are required. For an HND: • qualifications equivalent to one or two UK A-levels, two Scottish Highers or a Higher National Certificate or BTEC National Diploma; or an international foundation year IELTS 5.5-6.0. At postgraduate level, students from outside the UK form over 25% of the student body.

What do I need to think about?

There are currently over 18,000 postgraduate opportunities to choose from. There are a vast range of courses and you need to think about which will best suit your needs. To help do this you must first determine what your existing qualifications and experience enable you to do. And secondly you should decide where your ambition lies. Think about your answers to the following questions: • Is a postgraduate course necessary for the field of work/career that you have chosen? • If career advancement is the reason for doing a postgraduate degree, can you find out from professional bodies in your own country which qualification you should aim for? • Would a postgraduate qualification enhance your job prospects in your chosen field or might employers be more interested in the skills that you have picked up during work experience? • Do you need to do a particular postgraduate qualification to convert to the career area which you are interested in? • Do you need to do an initial postgraduate course (such as a Masters) as preparation for later doctoral study?

What can I study?

In the UK, “postgraduate” refers to the level of higher education following a first degree such as the BA. There are many types of postgraduate programmes but they all usually require you to have completed a first degree (or the equivalent in your own country.) Many postgraduate courses now contain both taught and research elements. However there is a traditional division between the two styles of delivery and you will often find qualifications split into either “taught” or “research” programmes. Taught coursesSome taught courses are designed to deepen your knowledge of your undergraduate subject, others are ‘conversion’ courses that will introduce you to a new subject and bring you up to speed quickly. Taught courses usually consist of a number of modules which are assessed by a mixture of continuous assessment and exams. There will be a set amount of contact time with staff through seminars, tutorials, lectures and one to one contact. Taught courses generally result in the award of Diplomas, Certificates and certain Masters degrees. The final assessment for a Masters degree is often based on the submission of a dissertation, usually of between 10,000 - 20,000 words. Research coursesResearch courses involve the in-depth study of a specific field, usually related to your first-degree subject. The results are presented as a written report known as a thesis or dissertation. This forms the subject of an oral examination usually conducted by two specialists in your field of research. Most research degrees involve working closely with one or more experienced researchers who supervise your study. To be successful you will need to demonstrate intellectual independence and, as you have to set and keep to your own schedule, time-management skills and self-discipline. Where can I search for a postgraduate course? The main web resource for finding out about postgraduate programmes and doing course searches is: Education UK; www.educationuk.org Can I progress from a Diploma or Certificate to a Masters?Yes. Some courses offer this specifically. They will be listed in course directories as MSc/Diploma or MA/Diploma. Is the quality of postgraduate research assessed?Yes. In addition to QAA audits and reviews, the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) evaluates the quality of research in universities and colleges. Its main purpose is to distribute public funds for research selectively on the basis of quality.

The RAE is conducted every 4-5 years and uses a process of ‘peer review’ where academics review the quality of work of their fellow researchers. The last exercise was in 2008. The results of the RAE are given on a departmental basis, from 1 (the lowest) to 5* (the highest) according to level of excellence. The RAE assesses the quality of research and not the quality of teaching but postgraduate research students may find it useful to look at the ratings for their subject across institutions. What qualifications will I need?Entrance requirements for postgraduate programmes vary greatly, so we suggest that you check with the specific institutions you would like to attend. If you are not sure where you want to go, you can obtain prospectuses from different institutions or find the information on their websites.

As a rough guide, for a taught programmeyou will usually need: • An outstanding academic record, with proven academic achievement. • Usually, a first degree in the same subject as the postgraduate degree you intend to take.

For a research programme you will need: • An outstanding academic record, with proven academic achievement. • Usually, a first degree in the same subject as the postgraduate degree you intend to take. • Generally, a Masters degree (a taught Masters), an MPhil (Master of Philosophy) or MRes (Master of Research) • Evidence that you know something about research procedures. • Some experience of working alone on a research project is very useful. • Evidence of good writing and communication skills, especially with humanities and social science doctorates. Will my non-UK qualifications meet course entrancerequirements?The National Academic Recognition Centre (NARIC) www.naric.org.uk is the official source of information on the comparability of international qualifications with those in the UK. UK NARIC supports universities and colleges but the final decision on the recognition of international qualifications is always made by the individual institution. Are there any English language requirements?Yes. Ensure that you have the English language ability required by the institutions you intend to apply to. For a postgraduate course an IELTS score of 6.0 to 7.0 may be required. Ask your local British Council of-fice where and when you can take the test.

How do I apply?

There is no centralised admissions system for postgraduate courses in the UK so you should apply directly to the institution.

Each institution will have different application procedures so you need to check with them directly. It is important to allow yourself lots of time when applying for a course as it may take some time for the institution to process the application and get back to you with a decision. What goes into the application will vary but you will be expected to highlight your academic record and possibly mention you proposed research interests. Work experience is valuable when applying for postgraduate courses so think about skills you have developed whilst working. Your personal statement will be a key part of the application so think carefully about your motivation and relevant experience for your chosen programme.

There is no restriction on the number of institutions to which you can apply but student advisors recommend a shortlist of 6-8 institutions.2. maritime, mineral or welfare law. You would usually be asked for a good level (uppersecond-class or above) degree in law or a subject relevant to your postgraduate studies.

Checklist: choosing the right course

Check with relevant authorities (e.g. potential employers and relevant regulatory bodies) that your proposed course of study complements your chosen career. For example, if you want to practise law in your own country: • does a UK legal qualification enable you to do that? (check with your professional legal body; you may have to undertake more training). • do the options offered by UK law schools include subjects that are compulsory in your own country? • Would it be more useful to you to combine law withanother subject? See the charts on the following page for an outline of the normal routes to qualification as practising lawyers in the jurisdictions of England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. If you are already qualified as a practising lawyer in your own jurisdiction alternative possibilities may exist for you to requalify as a lawyer, or to practise under your home title, in these jurisdictions (see under “Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test” on page 35).

Qualification as a practising lawyer

Routes to professional qualificationThere are essentially three types of practising lawyer in the UK: • Solicitors, who undertake a wide range of legal work including, for example, corporate transactions, transfer of property and litigation. They may or may not specialise. Those who specialise in litigation appear in only the lower courts (unless they have obtained an additional ‘higher rights’ qualification enabling them to appear in the higher courts). Many solicitors work in private practice, others work in the legal departments of public or private organisations. • Barristers/advocates, also known as counsel, who are specialist advocates with unlimited access to the courts. • Legal executives, whose daily work is similar to that of solicitors, but usually work in a particular specialism, such as transferring property, litigation or probate. They work for solicitors in England and Wales, or in the legal departments of public or private organisations.

United Kingdom (UK) law qualifications are widely recognised and respected in many countries. But there are other reasons to consider legal studies in the UK. The skills you learn could be useful in other careers such as business, management consultancy, banking, journalism or international human rights. You would certainly not be restricted to one type of work unless you choose to specialise.

Checklist: why study law in the United Kingdom?

• If your country recognises UK legal degrees (many do), you could have no better start for your career. • Analytical skills, learning to present a reasoned and convincing argument, time management and good communication skills are built into UK law courses. • You can study in any part of the United Kingdom (although there are three separate legal systems: England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland). • You can choose to do any level of study, from a one-year career-based course to qualifying as a practising lawyer. • You can take a course to combine law with another subject such as business studies, accountancy, sociology, information technology, journalism, economics and politics. You can also study it together with a foreign language. • There is a broad range of taught and research-based postgraduate courses (both academic and practice-based) which allow you to specialise and gain international experience.

What can I study?

The variety of courses, how you can study, the combination of courses you can take and the different institutions that offer pure law and combined courses make studying law in the UK extremely flexible. Many institutions have their own dedicated schools of law. You can take: • a diploma in law, which would enable you to take an LLB (Bachelor of Laws) degree • undergraduate degrees in pure law (LLB - Bachelor of Laws) or law with another subject (BA - Bachelor of Arts) • taught or research Master’s degrees (LLM - Master of Laws) in specialist areas of law, including maritime, international and commercial • research degrees (PhD - Doctor of Philosophy) • sandwich courses enabling you to gain practical experience • career-based courses, such as the Legal Practice Course, leading to qualification as a solicitor, or the Institute of Legal Executives (ILEX) qualification.

Entrance at degree level

What qualifications would I need to take a degree in law? • law is a competitive subject to study, so required grades are likely to be high: ABB or BBB (or higher depending upon the university) at A-level, or five Scottish Highers (at least four A grades), or the equivalent, are typical • you do not need to have studied law to be accepted on to a degree course • you would be expected to speak good English (IELTS 6.5 at undergraduate level, and IELTS 7 at postgraduate level, is likely to be required). Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test

If you are already qualified as a practising lawyer in your own country, you may be able to requalify as a solicitor in England and Wales, without undertaking the normal qualification process, by sitting the Qualified Lawyers Transfer Test (QLTT) examinations. Qualification through the QLTT is dependent upon your primary legal practice quali-fication being from an eligible jurisdiction and you having undertaken two years’ legal practice (either in England and Wales or in your own jurisdiction), of which at least one year must have been under the su-pervision of a Solicitor of England and Wales. More information on theQLTT can be found on the Solicitors Regulation Authority website (www.sra.org.uk).

Qualification under the Establishment Directive The Establishment of Lawyers Directive 98/5/EC entitles lawyers qualified in one member state of the European Union (their home state) to practise law on a permanent basis under their home title in another member state (the host state) as a Registered European Lawyer. European lawyers are required to register with a competent authority in the host state (e.g. in England and Wales, the Solicitors Regulation Authority or the Bar Council) and to comply with the rules of conduct of the local profession. In Scotland EU qualified lawyers must sit an Aptitude Test in order to be registered to practise in Scotland. Further information can be found on the Law Society of Scotland’s website, which includes past papers for the examinations which are now held in May and November of each year. The Directive also provides a more direct route to qualification as a solicitor. This applies if the European lawyer has been practising in the UK for three years and practising local law (including EC law) for the whole of that time (or, under some circumstances, for a somewhat shorter period).

What issues should I consider as an international student?

The most important issue is whether UK legal qualifications are relevant and usable in your own country. It cannot be overstated how important it is that you check this with potential employers and/or your professional association at home.

Undergraduate Degree Programmes: Northumbria Law School considers applications from students with a variety of qualifications from overseas countries and is always pleased to answer individual enquiries about the acceptability of overseas qualifications.

There are no formal entry requirements for the LLB (Hons) Open Learning programme, however, applicants should be able to show a high level of motivation, discipline and the necessary intellectual ability required to complete a degree level course successfully. This may be demonstrated by formal qualifications or work experience. Postgraduate Degree Programmes - Applicants should hold a degree from a UK university, or its equivalent from an institution recognised as such by Northumbria, or a comparable professional qualification.

English Language Requirements:If English is not your first language you will need to show that you have an adequate knowledge of both written and spoken English. The minimum requirements are shown below: Undergraduate - IELTS 6.5; TOEFL paper-based test 580; TOEFL computer test 230; Equivalent score in another English language examination. Where an applicant has been educated in the English language at a recognised institution, they may be exempt from the requirements. Postgraduate - IELTS 7.0; TOEFL paper-based test 600; TOEFL computer test 250; Equivalent score in another English language examination.

Northumbria School of Law has a range of programmes and flexible modes of study to help students achieve their goal of becoming a successful lawyer. Your route through the test

ListeningTime: 30 minutesCandidates listen to a number of recorded texts, which increase in difficulty as the test progresses. These include a mixture of conversations and dialogues and feature a variety of English accents and dialects. The recording is heard only once, but candidates are given time to read the questions and record their answers. Academic ReadingTime: 60 minutesThere are three reading passages with tasks. Texts are taken from books, magazines, journals and newspapers, all written for a non-specialist audience. At least one of the texts contains a detailed argument. Academic WritingTime: 60 minutesFor the first task, candidates write a report of around 150 words based on material found in a table or diagram, demonstrating their ability to describe and explain data. For the second task candidates write a short essay of around 250 words in response to an opinion or a problem. They are expected to demonstrate an ability to discuss issues, construct an argument and use the appropriate tone and register. SpeakingTime: 11-14 minutesThe Speaking Module consists of an oral interview between the candidate and an examiner. There are three main parts. In Part 1 the candidate answers general questions about themselves, their homes/ families, their jobs/studies, their interests and a range of similar familiar topic areas. In Part 2 the candidate is given a verbal prompt on a card and is asked to talk on a particular topic. In Part 3 the examiner and candidate engage in a discussion of more abstract issues and con-cepts which are thematically linked to the topic prompt in Part 2.

IELTS Result

Your online Test Report Form and Result will be available 13 days after the test. You will be given a band score for each of the papers as well as an overall band score along with a brief description of your level. The result is valid for two years.
